CARE, PASSION, PERFORMANCE !
(4)

I have been an equine veterinarian for the past 18 years and have worked in several different countries taking care of horses' health and welfare before starting my practice on the Mornington Peninsula and surrounds. I have a wealth of experience in internal medicine, lameness examinations, pre-purchase examinations, ophthalmology, radiology and many other areas in equine medicine. I hope to meet you and your horse soon for an introduction.

Lymphangitis (or vasculitis, big leg disease, staph infection, or cellulitis), is a bacterial infection and a dramatically different condition. While its causes may vary, it’s easy to spot once it sets in: the swelling will be extreme, hot and very painful to the touch, and the horse will be depressed due to the fever and discomfort.
If you think your horse has cellulitis or even if you’re not sure, we encourage you to seek professional help, promptly. Your vet will make the best treatment recommendations, both to reduce swelling and to address any sort of bacterial infection that might be active or that could occur due to the edema in the soft tissue.

Very important this hot summer in Victoria!

Recognise Heat Stress in Horses: Watch out for signs like high temperature, rapid breathing, stumbling, and refusal to eat or work. Exercise increases the risk, especially for horses with compromised sweating ability. Keep an eye on foals too—they’re more susceptible. Work your horse on a hot day? Yes, but with precautions. Stay vigilant for dehydration and signs of heat exhaustion. If your horse looks tired, they need a break, a cold bath, and some shade.

What do you know about sport horse medicine and rehabilitation?

Sarah le Jeune, DVM, DACVS, DECVS, DACVSMR, certified equine acupuncturist, and Jessica Morgan, DVM, PhD, DACVSMR, both specialty clinicians at the UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, provide some insights into this topic in the graphic below.

Point #3 is especially important: “A rehabilitation program is only as good as its underlying diagnosis.” Treatment without a proper diagnosis can often result in a waste of money and time, so be sure to work with your regular veterinarian to clearly identify any issues in order to give your horse the best chances of a successful outcome.

The ”Sport Horse Medicine and Rehabilitation” issue, produced by UC Davis Center for Equine Health, can be read in its entirety at:https://cehhorsereport.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/sites/g/files/dgvnsk9021/files/inline-files/Horse_Report_Summer_22_web_0.pdf
