Rest Your Paws collaborated with the ABC to develop the documentary program “Goodbye My Dog”, airing this Sunday.

Australians love their dogs. In fact, almost half of us have welcomed dogs into our homes. For many people, saying goodbye to these treasured family members is devastating.

Compass follows three families though the grief of their dog’s last days, and reveals the tender loving moments usually hidden from public view.

With high temperatures across much of Australia, knowing how to keep your pet safe from the heat has never been more important. Heatstroke in pets can be subtle but fatal, so we recommend you follow these simple tips to avoid trouble this summer:

☀️Avoid exercise or too much excitement during hot weather.
☀️Avoid walking on hot surfaces such as concrete or outdoor tiles.
☀️Keep your pet inside in a cool room, somewhere you can keep an eye on them.
☀️Provide plenty of cool, clean, fresh water.
☀️Never leave your pet in a vehicle or in unventilated confined spaces at home.
☀️Contact your local vet if any signs of heatstroke arise (excessive panting, restlessness, drooling, red gums, vomiting, diarrhoea).

While traveling with your pet is always a fun and memorable adventure, it is important to remember these key safety reminders as we enter the holiday period, especially if you have a senior pet.

🚗Plan a pet-friendly route to ensure your pet has plenty of safe places for toilet breaks and exercise.

🚗Take a practice trip ahead of time. If your pet is particularly anxious, practice short drives to your local park. This will form more positive associations with driving.

🚗If your dog has existing health issues, ask your vet about how travel may affect them, and make sure your dog’s vaccines and flea and tick preventatives are up to date.

🚗Pack the essentials. ensure to pack their food, enough clean cool water, treats, medicine, toys and feeding bowls for their comfort.

🚗Safety first always. Ensure your car is fitted with a harness or secure crate. Remember to have the aircon on to keep them from overheating.

🚗Take frequent breaks. Our pets can get very bored and restless much faster than we can. Remember to take frequent safe breaks like short walks in a local park to help stimulate their mobility and blood flow.

Keeping our senior furry friends' minds sharp and vibrant is a top priority as pet parents. Did you know that a specialised diet plays a crucial role in supporting their cognitive health?

🧠 As our pets age, their nutritional needs change, and providing them with the right nutrients can make a huge difference in their mental agility and overall well-being.

🥦 Introducing a diet rich in antioxidants, Omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins specifically designed to enhance brain function in our beloved senior pets. These nutrients help combat cognitive decline, improve memory, and promote mental clarity.

When is my pet considered ‘senior’?

As our pets age, they become more vulnerable to age-related diseases, just like people. So when does your pet fall into this higher risk category and become 'senior'?

It depends on the species, as cats and dogs age differently, as well as the breed and size of the dog. In general, larger dogs age faster than small breeds.

Cats - approximately 10 years old
Small to medium dog breeds - 7 to 9 years old
Large to giant dog breeds - 5 to 7 years old

If you have a senior pet, they may require increased veterinary care, specialised diets and nutrition, lifestyle and environmental changes, increased monitoring and more. Contact your vet or one of our team to learn more about the needs of your senior pet.

How can I manage my pet’s breathing problems at home?

Many medical conditions cause breathing problems in our pets, including heart disease, asthma, obesity, airway disease, infection, cancers and more.

When it comes to breathing, don’t leave anything to chance, and always work closely with your vet for the well-being of your pet, including diagnostics and treatments.

Signs of breathing problems include:
🐾 Less willing to exercise
🐾 Excessive panting, particularly on a mild day with no exercise
🐾 Increased effort or sound when breathing
🐾 High breathing rate, particularly when at rest
🐾 Coughing
🐾 Restlessness at night and unwillingness to lay flat

If your pet has been diagnosed with a breathing problem, aside from the advice of your veterinarian and prescribed medications, there are vital things you can do at home to support them.

Try the following to help your pet breathe more easily:
🐾 Keep your pet in an ideal body condition to prevent obesity-induced breathing issues
🐾 Engage in low-intensity exercise rather than vigorous play
🐾 Elevate your pet's food and water bowls
🐾 Do not smoke, use strong perfume or cologne, air fresheners or light candles
🐾 Avoid taking your pet outside when it’s hot or humid.

For personalised advice, contact your vet or our team at www.restyourpaws.com.au.
