What a beautiful recount of Judy's amazing work 🥰 We really don't deserve dogs 🐶

Judy, a purebred pointer, was the mascot of several ships in the Pacific, and was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and taken to a prison camp. There she met Aircraftsman Frank Williams, who shared his small portion of rice with her.

Judy raised morale in the POW camp, and also barked when poisonous snakes, crocodiles or even tigers approached the prisoners. When the prisoners were shipped back to Singapore, she was smuggled out in a rice sack, never whimpering or betraying her presence to the guards.

The next day, that ship was torpedoed. Williams pushed Judy out of a porthole in an attempt to save her life, even though there was a 15-foot drop to the sea. He made his own escape from the ship, but was then recaptured and sent to a new POW camp.

He didn't know if Judy had survived, but soon he began hearing stories about a dog helping drowning men reach pieces of debris after the shipwreck. And when Williams arrived at the new camp, he said: "I couldn’t believe my eyes! As I walked through the gate, a scraggly dog hit me square between the shoulders and knocked me over. I’d never been so glad to see the old girl!"

They spent a year together at that camp in Sumatra. "Judy saved my life in so many ways," said Williams. "But the greatest of all was giving me a reason to live. All I had to do was look into those weary, bloodshot eyes and ask myself: 'What would happen to her if I died?' I had to keep going."

Once hostilities ceased, Judy was then smuggled aboard a troopship heading back to Liverpool. In England, she was awarded the Dickin Medal (the "Victoria Cross" for animals) in May 1946. Her citation reads: "For magnificent courage and endurance in Japanese prison camps, which helped to maintain morale among her fellow prisoners, and also for saving many lives through her intelligence and watchfulness".

At the same time, Frank Williams was awarded the PDSA's White Cross of St. Giles for his devotion to Judy. Frank and Judy spent a year after the war visiting the relatives of English POWs who had not survived, and Frank said that Judy "always provided a comforting presence to the families."

When Judy finally died at the age of 13, Frank spent two months building a granite and marble memorial in her memory, which included a plaque describing her life story.

Hey guys,
Just a reminder to keep your pets safe by keeping your doors and gates locked - and to keep an eye out for your neighbour's pets as well if you can. It's a terrible thing having your pet get lost or stolen and we want to work together to keep all our pets safe.

Lock up your pups! 🐶
Dog-nappers are snatching family pets across the South East, and they have a hit list of some very popular breeds.

Cavalier King Charles spaniels are among the pooches going missing nationwide, but staffies, kelpies, maramas and chihuahuas are the most common varieties disappearing from Queensland homes, according to one Brisbane-based pet theft investigator.

It comes after three four-week-old puppies were stolen from a Woodridge home while their owners were watching TV earlier this week.

Positive reinforcement goes a long way.

You still need to be able to say "no" to your dog and set (and enforce) boundaries. You still need to give your dog directions and instructions. But make sure they get plenty of rewards and play time too.

Rewards and success builds confidence in your dog while dominance-based methods instil fear.

Frankie's strongest training cue is the recall. I've got 110% confidence that he'll come back to me in any situation, no matter how distracting it may be. This should be your goal with your dog.

The key to a reliable recall is to be more FUN than the distraction around your dog (especially while they're learning).

Next time you recall your dog, give them a really high value treat and play a fun game with them. This will motivate them to come back to you more quickly in future.

Does your dog have separation anxiety? Or, do you know someone who does struggle with an anxious dog?

Separation anxiety is when a dog exhibits stress behaviours when separated from their "people". Separation anxiety can be caused by a number of reasons, one of the most common is that they lack confidence when they are by themselves when their human is not around - they may not know quite how to act when left alone.

So how can crate training help reduce separation anxiety?
By making "crate time" a POSITIVE and CALM-FUN activity for your dog, we are building their confidence when we are not around.

Here are four things you can do to teach your companion that being in their crate is fun and positive, and reduce any separation anxiety they may have.

1. Ensure you are not rewarding any stress behaviours, instead make sure you are only rewarding calm behaviours. For instance, don't go and make a fuss of your dog when they are whining to get out of their crate. Wait a little while until they "give up" whining and then go and spend some time with them or let them out. This teaches them that GOOD THINGS happen when they are calm.

2. Ensure you are never using the crate as a punishment. Never get angry at your dog and then put them in their crate. This is because going into their crate should be a POSITIVE thing. Your dog should love going in their crate because they get treats and toys!

3. While you want to ensure that your dog perceives going into their crate as a positive thing, you shouldn't make too much fuss about them going in (or coming out). You see, when we are really excited and let our dog out of the crate - we're teaching them that COMING OUT of the crate is a good thing (NOT being in the crate). Instead, calmly let your dog out of their crate, wait a minute or so and then reward them and play with them!

4. When you're pooch is still "learning the ropes" when it comes to crate training, don't just put them in their crate and leave the house - this is "throwing them in the deep end" so to speak and is something we want to avoid. We want to build our dog's confidence in the crate and we do that by first crating them when we are at home and not leaving them in their crate too long!

Can you think of any more ways we could make the crate fun?
