Max and I have been working on his loose lead walking. 🐕🦺
He was getting really good at his familiar location so we stepped it up by working in a new area to challenge him, as well as to start generalizing the skill.
Super proud of how he did. ❤️
Did you know that dogs do not automatically know what they should do on a lead? Being restrained in such a way isn't natural to them, it's something humans have introduced. If pulling gets them to where they want to go, they'll happily keep doing. So if you want a loose lead walk, it is a skill that needs to be trained, just like a sit, down or recall.

❤️🌼 MAISIE 🌼❤️
I recently took my newly adopted rescue dog Maisie out for her first solo walk. I had already determined Maisie to be quite a timid and sensitive dog, but I wanted to assess whether being without the company of her brother Max would reveal anything different….and it did.
In the video you can see that she is quite stressed and fearful of the surrounding environment-moreso than when she has her canine companion.
Her tail is tucked, she is very hypervigilant of the environment and startles easily with sudden noises or movements. This is not a state of mind I want Maisie to have to experience for the rest of her life.
Like many rescue dogs, little is known of Maisie's history, but it's likely that she has experienced little socialisation in the past.
So, what is the plan moving forward for Maisie?
✅ Lots of confidence building. This will be achieved through training games and skill development to help her experience feelings of fulfillment and accomplishment.
✅ Gradual exposure to new environments. Starting with quiet areas with little stimuli to avoid overwhelming her. This includes just sitting and letting her observe the world around her.
✅ Practicing being a strong advocate for her. This means making sure I am always looking out for her best interests and keeping her feeling safe and protected. She has likely never had anyone do this for her in the past, leading to feeling constantly on edge and wary of her environment.
✅ Building up her food drive, so we can utilize this form of motivation to be able to reward her in environments that may be challenging.
We have a long way to go, but I love working with anxious and fearful dogs to help them realize their full potential. If you have a dog with similar qualities and are feeling overwhelmed with what the right approach is, please know there is hope and help available. ❤️

🚫😟 FEARFUL DOGS 😟🚫
Dogs communicate through body language, and fearful dogs will present many subtle signs to indicate their feelings of stress, anxiety, nervousness or apprehension about a trigger or situation. If these signs are misinterpreted or not recognized by owners, this can lead to serious behavioural and emotional consequences.
What can you do as an owner?
🐶Learn to interpret and understand these signs in your dog
🦴 Keep your dog safe
🐶 Be a confident leader for them
🦴 Do not force them into stressful situations
🐶Respect their boundaries
🦴 Consult a professional if your dog is experiencing severe fear-based behaviours.

❤️🐶 MUZZLE TRAINING 🐶♥️
Having your dog wear a muzzle is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, I admire and respect owners who take the iniative to train and muzzle their dogs if it is safer for them and the community to do so.
Gomez, like many dogs, hates going to the vets. Unfortunately, he has had enough bad experiences to make it impossible for him to be seen without sedation. However, even trying to sedate him is a whole other challenge as his reaction to seeing a muzzle was to go into fight mode and potentially bite.
His owner doesn't want to see him or those helping suffer, so we are trying to condition the muzzle to mean lots of wonderful things instead! We are still in the early stages, but he is making great progress.
Muzzles (and haltis) should never just be thrown on a dog. They require time and training to condition the dog to wear them otherwise you risk sensitizing your dog to their use.
