On Thursday 2 May 2024, at a property on the NSW South Coast, RSPCA NSW Inspectors and members of the NSW Police Force executed a search warrant. That warrant was granted following information received by RSPCA NSW that a person previously prohibited by the NSW Local Court from purchasing, acquiring, taking possession or custody of animals for ten years, was in possession of a number of animals.

A total of 48 animals, including 11 puppies, 3 adult dogs, 2 ducklings, 2 adult ducks, 2 rabbits, 5 quails, 15 guinea pigs, 4 turtles and 4 rats, were seized from the property.

All animals have been admitted into RSPCA NSW care, where they are undergoing veterinary assessments and receiving treatment as needed. This is part of an ongoing cruelty investigation.

If you have animal welfare concerns, please call RSPCA NSW to investigate on 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 358) or make a report online at: www.rspcansw.org.au/report-a-cruelty-case.

SENIOR SUNDAY 👴👵❤️

Older pets make great companions — they are usually calm, gentle and love spending time with the family. They are more settled in their behaviours and you definitely can teach an old dog new tricks! ✨

No matter how they arrive in care, they are all looking for the same thing. A safe, caring home and someone to love them for who they are 🏡

Our Seniors for Seniors Program also includes 50% off the adoption fee and a 10% discount on veterinary services for all Senior Card holders who adopt a senior pet.

RSPCA NSW Outreach strives to enhance animal welfare by assisting high priority communities with services and initiatives that promote the welfare of animals, contribute to the wellbeing of people, and strengthen the human-animal bond.

We received federal funding through NSW DPI to undertake the project to run the Indigenous Community Companion Animal Health Program (ICCAHP) in Bourke in 2023 and Wilcannia in 2024 and assess community awareness about the encroaching deadly tick disease - Ehrlichiosis Canis. Ehrlichia, or Tick Fever, will be devastating to dogs in remote communities that have limited access to good information.

A big Thank you to Elanco who provided Seresto collars for tick prevention to distribute as part of the program. This ensures the community have a way of effectively protecting their dogs from tick borne disease, as well as increasing their awareness of the disease. This preventative measure would have been cost prohibitive for many without the support.

The local ranger was instrumental in supporting the program and we are pleased to have had the opportunity to supervise some of the last steps for him to get his microchipping license through the RSPCA NSW Training team. He is the only person in Central Darling Shire to be able to microchip now which is a massive step for animal welfare in the area as he can now identify and adopt out animals from the pound.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the day’s success, these days are so important in helping us achieve our mission to increase awareness in far west communities ❤️

03/05/2024

From the 9th-11th of April, RSPCA NSW Inspectors, Education and Outreach Officers from our Hunter, Broken Hill and Sydney locations visited Wilcannia for one of our regional community outreach initiatives. This was done in partnership with Local Lands Council, Wilcannia Community Centre and Central Darling Shire Council.

Its remote location makes it quite challenging to connect and undertake any type of community activity. This makes these days so important in assisting communities through inclusive guidance and support, as well as ensuring access to core preventative veterinary care, behaviour advice and education that promotes the health and welfare of animals, strengthens the human-animal bond and keeps the family safe, healthy and together.

The program saw:
🐶😺 108 dogs and 16 cats provided with vaccinations, health checks, microchips, parasite prevention and pet food.
🐶😺 49 dogs and 16 cats were desexed.
🏡 58 people attend from 46 households.

Wilcannia community members were able to have their dogs and cats desexed at the field hospital set up inside the community hall staffed by an RSPCA NSW veterinary team. We were able to have two desexing stations set up within the field hospital and one Health Check station set up outside the community centre.

RSPCA NSW Broken Hill Veterinary Clinic staff were present and connected with community members, forming important relationships for the future. The Broken Hill staff will also follow-up some referrals for individual clients and animals for treatment of conditions beyond the scope of our registration with this program.

A big Thank you to Wilcannia for welcoming us and everyone who helped to make the day such a great success ❤️

In March 2016, Polar came into the world at our Hunter shelter. Born to Dakota, a young mum who was barely more than a pup herself ❤️

When Polar arrived, it was quite the surprise. Wrapped snugly in a blanket within Dakota's kennel, she was a little white ball of fluff, weighing a hefty 610 grams 💪

Sadly, Dakota was uninterested in her tiny companion and Polar found her way into the loving care of her human foster mum 🥰

From that day forward, under her carers watchful gaze, Polar blossomed. From a delicate pup to a majestic 54kg bundle of joy, she filled the home with love and warmth. Despite her size and all the hair she sheds, Polar remained the epitome of loyalty, never leaving her mum's side 😌

While Polar's journey may have started as a foster pup, it quickly became clear that she had already found her forever home. Her foster mum made it official and happily adopted her 🙌

As Polar celebrates her 8th Birthday, what better time than now to share her remarkable journey. Here's to many more years of enduring love, joy and never-ending companionship ❤️

Yesterday, Wednesday 1 May 2024, a team of RSPCA NSW Inspectors executed a search warrant at a property in South Western Sydney. A total of nine animals were seized, including seven dogs, one turtle and a cockatoo requiring veterinary treatment.

The dogs were suffering from a range of health issues including poor body condition, untreated dog fighting wounds and hip problems. One of the dogs had allegedly been tethered for up to two weeks, and another was found locked inside a crate.

All animals have been admitted into our care, where they are undergoing veterinary assessments and receiving treatment as needed. This is part of an ongoing cruelty investigation.

If you have animal welfare concerns, please call RSPCA NSW to investigate on 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 358) or make a report online at: www.rspcansw.org.au/report-a-cruelty-case.

Today we would like you to meet the wonderful Zarli 💞

This sweet girl has found herself back at the shelter not once but twice through no fault of her own. Despite the setbacks, Zarli's spirit never falters, she remains a shining example of resilience and unconditional love.

Zarli loves cuddles and taking slow walks in the park. She would suit a family to let her inside with them on the couch or even give her a special spot nearby. She is a very clever girl so enrichment and toys are important to keep her big brain active. She absolutely adores the water and longs for a family that will cherish her for the beautiful soul she is 💞

If you are looking for a sweet and happy dog, then Zarli is the girl for you and would love to meet you.

Monumental news for our fuzzy friends in south-west Sydney 🐨

We are delighted with the news that the NSW Government has delivered on its commitment to investing in a $4.5 million koala care centre in the Sydney Macarthur region, alongside $500,000 to support koala volunteer rehabilitators.

The investment will boost the availability of expert help for injured and sick koalas in the region, which is home to a thriving koala population.

The koala care centre will be part of the Wildlife Health and Conservation Hospital on the Camden campus of the University of Sydney’s School of Veterinary Science. This facility treats the majority of koalas which come into care in the Macarthur region.

Those koalas include orphans Mack and Gage, who were released back into the wild at Wedderburn in south-west Sydney yesterday, after being treated and cared for by staff and volunteers from the Wildlife Health and Conservation Hospital and WIRES.

This investment is a very important step towards the preservation and protection of these iconic and cherished animals, and we commend the NSW Government for all their continued efforts to improve koala welfare across the state.

Meet Hermit ❤️

This sweet boy is a 3-year-old gentle teddy bear, ready to fill your home with love and warmth.

He thrives on human companionship and would be the ideal dog for those who enjoy lounging around the house as he is a laid-back couch potato who loves nothing more than snuggling up with his humans. He's happiest when he's relaxing, enjoying belly rubs or playing with his favourite toys.

If you're looking for a loyal companion to share your home with, this sweet boy could be the perfect match for you 🏡💕

LEST WE FORGET 🌹

Anzac Day is a day of national remembrance honouring those who served and gave their lives during times of conflict, peacekeeping operations and war.

Today is also an opportunity to remember the loyalty and sacrifice of the service animals who stood alongside their battalions during these times. Each not only bringing companionship but a other unique contributions to those in the trenches and on the battlefields 🐎🦘🐪🐓

Yesterday was World Book Day! 📖👀

At most of our shelters, you will find enrichment stations in each adoption area, encouraging positive interactions between members of the public and those waiting for their forever homes.

One such interaction is reading – which is a great way for the animals to connect with different people in a calm, familiar environment. It provides comfort, and companionship and is as rewarding for us as it is for them 🙌

This experience is often included for kids as part of our School Holiday Program, but if you would also like to share a few chapters of your favourite book with the very best listeners, reach out to your local shelter for any available opportunities.

Such a simple act of kindness can make a world of difference ❤️
