We regularly get asked if we have any blue, grey or Isabella puppies and our answer is a firm NO. We do not own or breed Isabella puppies. While they may look cute there are too many health issues. I am posting this article for your information before considering adding an Isabella or blue puppy to your family 🩵

Why is the colour Isabella (or blue/ grey) not recognised in the Dachshund breed standard? The reason is below.

“ As part of education - I am attaching photos of the danger of crossing dachshunds in a way that is not in accordance with the breed standard.

Here is an example of "Isabella / silver / blue / gray" or whatever they call it. People think, it's just about the color "what if it's not in accordance with the standard, if we will love it the same, and so beautiful etc." They think that we cling only because the color doesn't match our standard.

Ladies and Gentleman, it's not strictly about color, but what this color means. This particular gray color implies a genetic defect. This genetic defect is caused by 2 things - gray color of coat (which unfortunately many people like and encourage to buy a puppy unaware of their owners) AND many conditions for severe dermatological, ocular and circulatory conditions. These flaws do not reveal themselves most often when a dog is a puppy, so such a puppy looks lovely. They only reveal themselves as adults. Gray dachshunds suffer from baldness in adult ages (which causes lack of fur, sun burns and eventually skin cancer), skin cornea, rashes, burns and skin ailment, which usually results from swelling and falling off of ear fragments. They also suffer from many autoimmune conditions, including gastric diseases. In summary, once again - it's not that the color doesn't match the standard. The point is that this color is caused by something and that "SOMETHING" is a CDA gene, which besides color guarantees health problems in adult age. So be aware of what problems, what suffering and what treatment costs in the future you decide to get a dog, because you like the color.

The attached photos show flaws in puppy and adult gray dachshunds already revealed.

PS. Please believe me that some colors are banned not because some bureaucrat is sitting there thinking - no, I don't like that color, so we won't put it in the standard. These colors are forbidden for health reasons, so as not to cause animals suffering and not to reproduce them so that they can have sick offspring. Precisely in the case of dogs, it happens that it is easy to recognize genetic defects by the color of the coat, which is why critical comments about the color that does not match the standard appear when someone wants to buy or breed such a dog.”

LONE DOG?

I know of very few dogs who are happy to spend 8-10 hours alone at home waiting for their family to get back from work, no matter how many toys they have.

Dogs in the 'wild' (group of dogs that belong to no one, dogs that hang around rural villages, not referring to stray dogs), don't hang out alone - they are not lone dogs. They hang out all day with their canine family as they are social beings. Pet dogs are the same - they are family members and may not cope with hours and hours of separation. They may cry, bark, howl, chew stuff, dig holes and destroy the home - they are not naughty. They may be scared, anxious, bored or frustrated. They may also become depressed from all the alone time.

Puppies must to be taught how to stay alone for a few hours at most prior to 16 weeks, but asking them to be happy with being alone and bored for hours and hours at a time daily, whether crated or not, is not fair and very sad😔

Some dogs can over come separation anxiety when older by lots of desensitization and counter-conditioning but most never do. There are some options for your lonely dog:

1. Day care
2. Pet sitter
3. A neighbour or friend checking in on them every few hours and engaging them in an activity for a few minutes
4. Dropping them off at a family member for care taking
5. Rehoming your pet

Remember that you have various aspects to your life - friends, family, work, hobbies, gym, chores, Netflix, Ipad, gaming and school. They only have you to depend on for physical and emotional security, and stimulation. You are their whole world. Never forget that.

WHEN I AM OLD
When I am old...
I will wear soft gray sweatshirts...
and a bandana over my silver hair...
and I will spend my social security checks on my dogs.

I will sit in my house on my well-worn chair
and listen to my dogs breathing.

I will sneak out in the middle of a warm summer night
and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones will allow...

When people come to call, I will smile and nod
as I show them my dogs...
and talk of them and about them.....the ones so beloved of the past
and the ones so beloved of today...

I will still work hard cleaning after them,
mopping and feeding them and whispering their names
in a soft loving way.

I will wear the gleaming sweat on my throat,
like a jewel, and I will be an embarrassment to all...
especially my family...
who have not yet found the peace in being free
to have dogs as your best friends...
These friends who always wait, at any hour, for your footfall...
and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep,
to greet you as if you are a God,
with warm eyes full of adoring love and hope
that you will always stay,

I'll hug their big strong necks...
I'll kiss their dear sweet heads...
and whisper in their very special company....
I look in the mirror... and see I am getting old....
this is the kind of person I am...
and have always been.

Loving dogs is easy, they are part of me.
Please accept me for who I am.

These x-rays were just posted of a Bernese Mountain Dog who has come into rescue from a doodle breeding program. For those of you who aren't familiar with x-rays, this is extreme hip dysplasia. There should be sockets holding her legs in place. This is the mother of bernedoodle puppies. Do you think her "breeder" cared until she was in too much pain to keep breeding, at which time she was dumped? This is a hereditary condition. THIS is why it's important to support ethical breeders.

There is nothing that makes us happier than seeing our puppies being loved and cared for in their new homes with their new families. Our three recent puppies were all fortunate enough to be rehomed within the one extended family. Even though they have their own homes they get to come together every day for puppy daycare at one home. How wonderful that they get to be reunited everyday and support each other x

💙 Update: 💙 This gorgeous boy has found his new forever family and he will be joining them later this week. We are so excited for him but sad to see him go xx 💙

And then there was one.
This beautiful long haired chocolate and cream boy is 9 weeks old and is now available. Through no fault of his own his potential family were unable to get permission to have him at their house from their landlord.
He is the last but that doesn’t mean he is the least desirable. He is handsome, smart and very affectionate. This little guy loves spending time with people and other animals. He is very playful but also confident and very calm. He loves to cuddle and smother you with puppy kisses.
He has started his obedience and toilet training and is progressing beautifully and is a star pupil.
If you think you have room in your heart and your family to give him the best home ever please contact us.

As our puppies leave to begin their new lives with their lovely new families we get a lot of questions. We provide a lot of information in the puppys individual portfolio but we are always happy to answer questions.
Most questions are about settling the new puppy in, over the first few days. These are not silly questions at all, it's perfectly normal for a new pup to feel a bit unsure in their new environment, and for the new family to question am I doing this right?.
The important thing to remember is that they are babies who have only been alive for 8 weeks. Just like human babies they rely on you to teach them everything from their toileting to their behaviour.
They have just left their mother and their litter mates. Their new humans are different from us the breeders, and so is their new home. Different sounds smells and textures.
The key is always patience and consistency. Here are a few tips to help your little one settle in:

1. Give them a quiet, comfy place of their own where they can retreat and feel safe - a crate with their bed and a couple of their toys could be a good option. If a crate is not something you want to use then place their bed in a quiet corner away from main thoroughfares. if you have very small children always supervise them when playing with the puppy . Young children can be a little overwhelming when excited.

2. Maintain a regular routine of meals, potty breaks, playtimes, and naps. Consistency is a good thing and makes everything simple and easy to remember. Puppies almost always need to go potty as soon as they wake up or after they have eaten. Remember to reward their efforts with lots of praise. Just like human babies they will have accidents while training but consistency will make these less frequent.

3. Gradual exposure to new experiences and environments can also help build his confidence. Everyone is usually excited to meet your new addition and Im sure there will be an abundance of people wanting to give them cuddles, but take it slow, to avoid overwhelming them. We spend a lot of time with the puppies and as they are raised inside our home they are exposed to normal household noises from birth. Vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, televisions, washing machines, conversations and general clatter of everyday living.

It might take a little time for them to adjust to everything but each day you will see progress as they learn to adjust.

Just a little bit of information on the history of the breed

History

Dachshund' is a German word meaning 'badger dog,' and the breed's German history goes back some 600 years. And, as the breed name suggests, the Dachshund was developed to enthusiastically dig his way into a badger den and dispatch its occupant. The Dachshund's long, low body was custom-made for this dirty subterranean work.

For a dog of any size, a badger is a formidable adversary, weighing anywhere from 25 to 40 pounds, with razor-sharp teeth and claws. The cleverness, courage, perseverance, and strength that are hallmarks of today's Dachshund were first bred into his long-ago ancestors to best equip them for battling a deadly foe. The little dog's surprisingly loud, houndy bark is also a throwback to his working roots: It allowed the Dachshund's above-ground human hunting partner to mark his hound's underground location.

In addition to the breed's short, smooth coat, selective breeding produced types with wire coats for work in thorny brier patches, and long coats for cold climates. Dachshunds of various sizes were bred to work on different kinds of quarry. Packs of Dachshunds, according to breed authorities, were often used on wild boar. By the late 1800s, the process of standardizing the breed according to size, coat, and color varieties was well underway.

The Dachshund has long been a national symbol of Germany, so closely associated with the fatherland that during World War I American fanciers took to calling them Liberty Hounds due to anti-German sentiment. Admitted to the AKC Stud Book in 1885, their popularity in America was immediate and enduring.

Today I spent time on the phone talking to a prospective family for one of our sweet little boys. They told me a story of heartache being scammed online. We have had a few of our puppy families previously scammed out of money by unscrupulous people. Some of those scammers were not even in Australia. It’s sad and absolutely heartbreaking for those families that have been affected. They fall in love with a fictitious puppy only to be disappointed there is no puppy and that their money is gone. We have had other families who purchased a cheap puppy on gumtree only to find out that it wasn’t a purebred miniature dachshund or that it had devastating genetic defects. A puppy from a verified and registered breeder means the parents are tested and purebred. They are healthy happy well socialised and they should come with a lifetime of support from the breeder. A cheap puppy usually means the “breeder “ is a backyard breeder or from a puppy mill. Some one who thinks I’ll mate my dog with my friends dog and make some quick money. No testing no proper prenatal care of the mother and the puppies are usually lacking in nutrition training and socialisation.
We have undergone council, vet and rspca inspections of our home and facility, we meet the national animal welfare standards and are right paw verified. We are transparent with our health testing and our breeding practises. We are happy to FaceTime with prospective families so they can see there is a puppy and that we are not scammers. Prospective families can see the puppies parents , meet us and view our home and the area we raise the puppies in. We are more than happy to put them in touch with previous families who have one of our puppies from a previous litter. All our puppies come microchipped, wormed vaccinated vet checked and with a health guarantee as well as our lifetime never homeless guarantee.

23/06/2024

So many people only wanting girls to purchase with the intention to breed. It's incredibly sad for the little baby boys always overlooked. We will always recommend boys as pets and here's why.

Male vs. Female
Does a male or a female make a better pet for you and your family?
It’s not uncommon for people to believe that a female dog will make a better pet. We get a lot of calls for people wanting that “special little girl”. For whatever reason they don’t think that females will exhibit “alpha” behaviors like hu***ng and/or marking. A lot of people think that females are more passive and friendly and that they don’t take part in fighting over dominance, which could NOT be farther from the truth. If you check out the structure of dog packs, the females determine the pecking order and rule the roost. The result of that behavior is that the females become more stubborn, independent, and territorial than the males. These females are much more intent on exercising their control by participating in that “alpha” behavior like hu***ng. Most fighting will usually break out between two females.
Males tend to be more affectionate, exuberant, attentive, and even more demanding of attention. The males are very attached to their owners, tending to be more dedicated, reliable and less temperamental. They are more sociable, more accepting of other pets, playful for years, and take quicker to children. Most boys are easily motivated by treats/food, words of praise and are so eager to please that training actually becomes easier. Their playful nature, however, can make males more easily distracted. The boys are more likely to act silly and more puppy-like, always wanting to play games, no matter what their age. The boys are fun-loving until the day they die, whereas girls tend to be more standoffish and dignified the older they get.
Neutered males rarely exhibit secondary sexual behavior such as marking and lifting their legs or hu***ng. Once the testosterone levels recede after neutering, most of these behaviors will disappear if they ever existed. Boys who were neutered early (by five months of age) usually don’t ever raise their leg to urinate.
So before making your decision on that age old dilemma of male verses female, hopefully this will give you some helpful info to think about.

23/06/2024

Dachshunds love squeaky toys as the noise they make brings out their prey drive. As hunting dogs by nature, a dachshund has a very high drive to hunt and kill small animals or rodents.

While squeaky toys can bring joy and excitement to our dachshunds, there are potential dangers to be aware of. These toys can pose a choking hazard if they are not properly supervised, and they can also encourage destructive behavior if the dog is allowed to chew on them for too long.

It is important to monitor your dog when they are playing with squeaky toys, and to prevent them getting to the squeaker in case they swallow it. If you think your dog has swallowed a squeaker get him or her to the vet immediately.

Happy National Dachshund Day!
Let’s celebrate these spirited sausage dogs and their irresistible charm with 3 fun facts!
🐶The Dachshund name is of German origin and means “badger dog,” as the breed was used in Germany to hunt badgers.
🐶For decades, the Dachshund has been bred in three different sizes (Standard, Miniature and Rabbit ) and in three different coat varieties (Smooth-haired, Wire-haired, and Long-haired).
🐶 Because of their long bodies, Dachshunds are sometimes called wiener or sausage dogs; however, the hotdog came after the breed was developed. The hotdog was actually originally called the Dachshund sausage.

Has your dachshund destroyed your shoes or anything else in the home?

Your shoes are a combination of everything your dog loves: they’re chewy and they smell like you.

To stop your dog from chewing shoes, you need to remove the three causes of chewing: temptation, loneliness, and boredom.

Shoe chewing is an addictive behavior. You need to put your shoes away and remove the temptation. Your dog may try to apply their chewing to other things that smell like you. Make sure you keep your clothes put away, too. To control the cravings, give your dog an alternative like a Kong.

Your dog may be acting out if they’re lonely. If they’re chewing your shoes because they’re missing you, find something fun that the two of you can do together. If your dog is alone all day, consider getting them a canine companion or taking him to doggy daycare.

Remove the boredom your dog is facing.

Preventing your dog from chewing requires a combination of consistent training, providing appropriate chew toys, and understanding their needs. By creating a dog-friendly environment and redirecting their behavior, you can effectively curb the shoe-chewing habit. With patience and positive reinforcement, your dachshund can learn to enjoy appropriate chew items, ensuring a harmonious and shoe-safe home.
