Couldn’t resist sharing these beautiful pics that have been sent to us. These are a few of our 2024 babies and we feel so humbled by the lovely comments their families give us about how much love and joy these babies have brought their families ###
We love puppy playtime. These gorgeous girls are getting ready to find their forever homes very soon x
We love watching our puppies grow in size, personality and confidence. These precious long haired babies all have the most beautiful thick coats. Here they are all tuckered out from a big afternoon of playing and exploring.
We love watching our little puppies when they are sleeping. This handsome little long haired chocolate and cream boy is only 5 days old. I wonder what they are dreaming about ?
Yesterday our beautiful Chocolate Based shaded cream girl Holly blessed us with 5 beautiful healthy Long Haired Little boys.
We love receiving updates on our puppies from their new owners. It makes us so happy to see them enjoying their new lives in their forever homes. We received this update from Sylvia the new mum of “Brave “ now known as Lincoln. Living his best life in Rockhampton.
“Lincoln the Brave as we like to call him is doing well. He knows his name, and is living up to his middle name that’s for sure! He is eating and drinking well, and only needs two toilet breaks at night (both of which he has to be woken for). He eagerly enters the crate for bedtime, but not so much naps which mum enforces when she knows he is getting too overstimulated and tired. He is a big fan on his brother Griff’s furry tail, but Griff is not so fond of the sharp teeth. Good thing the big one can easily move to higher ground when bothered. They are becoming closer by the day and have properly started playing. Lincoln has plenty of toys because his teeth need it, but frozen carrot seems to help the most. He loves to snuggle and has been practicing his sit and spin. He can even sit and wait for a short time at meal times till ‘dinner’ is said. 💜
Well done Sylvia we know that Lincoln will continue to blossom with you guys and your ongoing love and training.
This month is”walk your dog month” a great resolution to start off the New Year.
However how much walking does your dachshund need?
This article is courtesy of the Dachshund UK IVDD website:
Exercise
* Keep your Dachshund active and well-exercised
* Don't over-exercise a puppy; gradually build its amount of exercise until it is 12 months old and its bones and muscles are fully developed
* Dachshunds over 12 months need a daily exercise regime that combines "on-lead" walking and free-running/playing
* Elderly Dachshunds will need less exercise than when they were younger
* Adapt the amount of exercise your Dachshund gets to keep it at an ideal Body Condition Score
In our survey, we asked owners to describe their Dachshund’s activity level as:
* Highly active
* Moderately active
* Mildly active
* Not at all active
Dogs over the age of 3 that were highly or moderately active were half as likely to have suffered an IVDD incident as dogs described as mildly or not at all active.
This could either be a genuine effect of fitter dogs being less prone to IVDD, or affected dogs are now leading less active lives.
Dachshunds over the age of 3 that were only exercised by being given daily free running/playing in the garden were 1.8 times more likely to suffer IVDD than dogs that were taken for walks on and off the lead as well. Presumably, “proper walks” on and off the lead build more muscle-tone and better body condition than free-play in the garden.
Don’t over-exercise a young puppy; allow it to mature fully and for its bones and muscles to develop before expecting it to be able to go on long walks (a rough guide is 5 minutes of “formal, on-lead exercise” daily, per month of age, in addition to allowing free playing/exercise)
Once fully grown (over the age of 12 months), keep your dog well-exercised and in good body condition (well-muscled and not overweight)
A mixed exercise regime on-lead and off-lead will help build good muscle tone; they need
Lucy Tricks
Lucy is our oldest dachshund. She has been retired from breeding for a few years now and enjoys her days helping us doing training with the younger members of our pack. Lucy is very intelligent and loves to show off her tricks. She plays with the young puppies and helps socialised them so there is no anxiety in their new homes being around a bigger dog. We like to ensure that our babies have all mastered at least one or two tricks before they leave us. Usually sit and wait we find to be the most important. Dogs love this kind of training and the rewards it brings. It’s a great way for your children to have some special time with their puppy too.
Hard to believe these beautiful smooth haired babies are almost 5 weeks old. Pam for more details
