It's a special Guinea Pig Sunday! Mother and little Guinea Pigs, Beatrix Potter, 1895
This original fantasy drawing by Beatrix Potter was given as a Christmas present!
Beatrix Potter, born today in 1866 is best known today as the beloved author and illustrator of the Peter Rabbit series. Her deep affection for the natural world and animals played a significant role in her life and work. Among her many pets, Potter kept guinea pigs, which she adored for their charming and quirky personalities. These little creatures often found their way into her detailed and whimsical illustrations. Beatrix Potter had several guinea pigs as pets, some of whom were a source of inspiration: Notably, guinea pigs appear in:
"The Tale of Two Bad Mice" - This story includes guinea pigs as part of the dollhouse inhabitants that Tom Thumb and Hunca Munca, the two bad mice, encounter.
"The Fairy Caravan" - In this lesser-known work, a guinea pig named Tuppenny is one of the main characters. The story follows Tuppenny's adventures after he runs away from home to join a traveling circus.
"Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes" - This collection of nursery rhymes includes an illustration of a guinea pig.
