Its so important to be careful with your young developing puppies & prepare your homes prior for welcoming home a puppy - this is why ⬇️

This is something everyone should see. This xray is of a 2 week old puppy.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown - around 12-18 months depending on their breed, you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

Today we met Niko the 2 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Niko’s family spoke to us before they had even started looking for a dog. We were so happy to chat with them about dog ownership and finding the right dog. We recommended they look into a Cav as first time dog parents and through a wonderful breeder they found Niko. Niko’s breeder shows Cavs and so Niko has already achieved his Champion title as a show dog (100 points). Many dogs who have been raised in the show ring tend to develop fairly stable temperaments due to the exposure they are subject to over the many shows they often attend. At each show a judge will approach, go over the dog with their hands and in some cases also check a dog’s teeth. Provided the dog possesses good genetics and has largely positive experiences over the shows they attend, this exposure can be extremely beneficial in creating a well rounded, social dog. Contrary to many assumptions about dog socialisation; another benefit of acquiring a dog who has grown up around the show ring is that at shows, breeders and owners do not allow dogs to go nose to nose with each other to ‘play’ or ‘say hi’. Dogs in most cases learn to be indifferent to the many dogs at the show by simply being in the presence of other dogs without interacting with them - a highly underrated socialisation technique that creates wonderful neutral dogs. From meeting Niko it seems he has picked up many of these positive traits from his exposure and is going to be a lovely little dog to work with! We can’t wait to see him for his next few sessions and believe he may even make a good little sport dog 🤩🐾

We have loved every minute of working with you in 2024! We will be taking a much needed break to rest and recover from the huge year that has been - ready to come into 2025 better than ever with lots of plans already in the works 🎉💪

We will be on admin intermittently throughout the holiday period however responses are likely to be slower than usual. Our books however are open for all bookings into 2025 and we will be announcing dates for Novice Scentwork Prep, Intro to Odour (Scentwork) and some other classes we are very excited to release over 2025 🤩

Appreciation post for the ‘off breeds’ doing sports they love and quite frankly excel at with their handlers! 😍 This little pocket rocket has to be the dog with the shortest legs Ive ever seen jump off anything 4 feet high and absolutely love it - was such a pleasure to assist these two teams last weekend and can’t wait to see them at future comps .with.no.toppings 🤩

Here’s the science for anyone still looking for the next “no pull” harness or gear. Teaching dogs not to pull is achieved through teaching them (training) not tools.

Dogs generally pull about 60 per cent harder on a leash when wearing a padded harness compared with a collar, even when the equipment is marketed as “anti pull” – putting the people walking them at risk of injury.

Some dogs – especially smaller breeds – pull with a force more than twice their body weight on the collar, potentially damaging their throats, says Erin Perry at Southern Illinois University.

“It’s really very shocking,” she says. “The dogs are almost choking themselves on that collar repeatedly. But the harnesses in our study just didn’t inhibit pulling in any way, and that’s definitely a wake-up call – especially because of the risk to owners.”

Managing a New Puppy with an Existing Dog in Your Home

When bringing a new dog into a household where you have an existing dog there are some key things to consider to set both dogs up safely and successfully:

1. Always feed separately with a physical barrier between dogs - no dog should feel like their food is at risk of being taken away by adults, kids or other dogs.

2. Closely Monitor Interactions - whether play sessions or first meetings, it is always best that the more boisterous/ unpredictable of the two (if not both) are on lead. If things escalate, seperate immediately and reintroduce soon after with professional or careful assistance. Neither of the two should be responsible for telling the other to slow down or move away - this is where escalation of behaviour can tip over into aggressive responses. Keep in mind dogs communicate via body language cues, eye contact and sometimes sound but every dog has a different level of tolerance and pre-existing understandings that might make them provide firm or sometimes dangerous ‘back off’ signals very quickly. For example a dog who has been hurt/attacked in the past may not waste time backing away or growling to create space and go straight for a bite to keep themselves safe.

3. Keep as much of your existing dog’s routines the same - your existing dog didn’t ask for a sibling. Try to keep routines and daily patterns as consistent as possible. Dogs like predictability and patterns. The puppy will adapt into the family pack once boundaries and structure is correct implemented however life should remain predictable for your existing dog.

Our last Puppy PreSchool graduates for 2024! 🎓 Congratulations Minnie, Tux, Enzo, Muffin, Levi & Arlo for graduating puppy preschool tonight! We had a blast with this lot and they have all come so far from their first class in their individual abilities and confidence. Their owners have also shown so much growth in their communication & handling skills which tells us these puppies have a bright future ahead of them 😍 We can’t wait to see what this lot get up to!

Puppy PreSchool will resume from the 14th of January with us at . If your puppy will be under 16 weeks of age by the 14th of Jan secure their spot as soon as you can - we’ll see you there!
