We have been pretty busy here at For Fish caring for our aquatic creatures in South Australia! Take a look at our recent client Freud! Freud has a traumatic lesion that allowed a secondary fungal infection to take over! Our vets have begun treating the fungal infection and we will be checking on Freud’s progress in a week’s time!

Shout out to our who is currently at the Aquatic Biosecurity Conference sharing her research that stresses the importance of taking the time to understand the normal physiology of our aquatic animals to then efficiently identify when an abnormality occurs.

Did you know a fish scale is the equivalent to a fingernail? It is still a common misconception that fish don’t feel pain. To avoid our fishy friends thinking they’ve been transported back in time to experience medieval torture. We should always take some action when observing scale loss as like our fingernails they shouldn’t be falling off. A start would be getting some pain relief on board. Let‘s give our fishy pets the basic care they deserve!!

Meet Papo, our patient of the week!
Cold weather can aid in the blooming of certain fungal and fungal-like protists. Here we have a saprolegnia infection that has infected Papo’s eye through a traumatic lesion.
Using their trusty microscopes our vets diagnosed the problem, and treated Papo with the appropriate topical antifungal medication. Five days on the infection has resolved and Papo is doing much better

They are often a source of frustration for owners as many quick fixes are just Band-Aid treatments, resulting in a rapid relapse in abnormal swimming by our fishy friends.

Mycobacteria is naturally present in aquatic environments. They are opportunistic organisms that tend to take over when your aquatic animals are immunosuppressed and tend to be a secondary problem to an underlying cause. Taking on mycobacteria can be difficult, complex and overwhelming - so take that off your plate and contact us, your friendly ever ready fish vets.

Here’s an update on our Fish friend Nemo! His wound is looking much better and soon Nemo will be back in his normal tank with tank mate Emma!

This week we visited Nemo to help him out with his growing lesion. It can always be tricky to determine if a lesion has occurred from the outside in or has started internally and worked its way out! Nemo’s owner called us up and our vets have started Nemo on the appropriate treatment! We will keep an eye on Nemo over the next few days to ensure everything heals up well!!

Yesterday we visited our favourite turtle Sydney! There were some interesting water quality results from Sydney’s tank stemming from some bricks! It’s important to ensure that the things we put in our tanks don’t leech out any chemicals as they can affect water quality and the animal’s health! Good thing Sydney’s mum was on it and called us in!!

Parasites can be troublesome for your fish but so can treating fish UNNECESSARILY. Get us in to confirm infections prior to treatment or we are happy to teach and educate YOU on appropriate microscope use so that you can find these little beasties effectively. We can discuss when treatment is appropriate and exactly what regime to follow for specific parasites.
