*Updated photo added! ๐ Just quietly, I copped a bit of flack ๐ซฃ for posting about our little boy that my heart was desperately wanting to keep, as it appeared that he presents with the mysterious Rufus Gene. This is where the red intensifies over time in their younger years, and is something some breeders find highly desirable. To clarify: In my 35 years of breeding (including Showing, and breeding Australian Champions) I am acutely aware that any decision to retain a potential stud is NOT based on colour alone. There is a series of testing that needs to be conducted as he grows... Genetic DNA, Extensive Physical Health testing over time, Behavioural, as good natures are very important to us, as is Size (at maturity and ancestry) to ensure the safety of our precious girls. Multiple factors go into the final decision. And finally, let me state again, the Rufus Gene is currently untestable. Much is unknown about it's behaviour, but the majority of those who have it in their lines explain that the puppies are born very light and darken quickly in the first weeks, showing frosting or frosted tips on the coat as it changes to red as it grows. Yes, pretty much all reds will fade. Some more than others. Those researching the Rufus Gene believe that the colour holds darker for longer over the lifetime of the dog. I don't profess to know for sure. If you do, please get in touch as I'd love to talk with you. I've seen some research say 4 years before any fade, and some of my breeder friends in the US have sustained deep mahogany from the alleged Rufus Gene in their 8 and 9 year olds. So in reality, I guess none of us really know until it is testable and fully understood through extensive research, monitoring over time by those on the ground experiencing it, and all the experts agree. All I do know, is that this little boy makes my heart skip a beat and I love him! I hope you guys will enjoy watching his journey with me as he grows. In the meantime, this is what his colour is doing for those of you genuinely interested in knowing how he develops. He was born almost cream. Big thanks to the 99% of you lovely people who sent your kind thoughts and support. I have been watching subsequent relevant conversations with interest. Most of those who assumed or were rude 'know it alls', were deleted and blocked. I was excited to share his story with you guys! And I will continue to do so with happiness and pride as we take this journey together ๐ค
