1052 days in foster care and counting... though her tail wags, Sprite is sad 😭
😢 She knows she's different, and even though she is well-loved in her foster home, she still feels forgotten and overlooked.
Unfortunately, when people think about adopting a greyhound, they are looking to adopt a couch potato. That means that dogs like Sprite tend to spend longer in foster care waiting for their forever home. 💔

MYTH: “I can't have a Greyhound because my house has stairs.”
BUSTED! Where does it come from? Greyhounds often don't have a conventional start to life like your average pet so when they come into foster care they may not have experienced stairs before.
The wonderful things about Greyhounds however is their endearing capacity to learn regardless of age.
Our fellow IWaG family have shared some of their tips and tricks for success:
💙 Lots of patience and reassurance with a gentle kind voice.
💙 Positive reinforcement with high value food (think roast chicken). Treats can be rewarded for each step or placed on each step to encourage movement.
💙 Stair treads or cheap yoga mats siliconed to the wooden stairs for confident, safe learning.
💙 Gently helping by moving one leg at a time and/or the support of a harness and lead.
💙 Having another dog to mirror how to go up AND down the stairs.
💙 Trying different stairs in and out of the home.
Like so many things in a Greyhounds life, stairs can absolutely be mastered. A little patience, positive reinforcement, treats and occasionally a creative solution to help them overcome their fear and gain confidence is the trick.
The best part? Taking the learning journey with them and knowing that as a team your Greyhound mastered a new skill.

🥰 Full disclosure: Five and a half year old Sprite is a dynamic blend of greyhound and a rocket with twiggy legs 💨 As a speed noodle, she defies the typical couch potato label!
🌞 Sprite is inquisitive, curious and adventure-ready. She is fiercely independent and prances to the march of her own paws 🐾 Once trust is earned, Sprite's tail wags nonstop!
😂 In her foster home, Sprite revels in schooling her humans on how to play fetch, running around the yard, and amusing all with her playful antics.
👑 Her favorite spot, "The Throne," is an outdoor chair from which she surveys her backyard. Like many greyhounds, Sprite cherishes her "me time" and personal space, and will seek out scritches strictly on her own terms.
⭐ A star on leash, Sprite adores her daily spin in the yard and around the block. She thrives on mental stimulation through puzzles and play. 🏠 Her new family will need to continue her training, ensuring she stays both physically active and mentally sharp.
