Tommy was a sleepy little boy after his first lesson 💤
This cutie wants to be a good boy but just needs a little guidance. Especially after losing his doggy pal. Using his brain to earn rewards and be a good doggo was tiring, so it was straight into his donut bed for a snooze 😴
Board & Train dog Billie wants to wish everyone a merry Christmas! 🎅 🎄
𝐈𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝?
I have seen an increasing number of posts and photos of dogs showing a 'big smile'. All I can usually seen is a highly stressed dog. Therefore I want to address it and aim for more education. Often the photos will be of a newly adopted dog or a dog in a foster home and the poster has good intentions and the goal of giving the dog an amazing life. Which is beautiful but it sometimes means that as humans we want to push our love onto the dog when the dog is still struggling just getting used to a new lifestyle. It is not helping your dog and in the worst case can even trigger a snap or bite from a nervous dog. So please learn about body language and keenly observe your dog's subtle signals. Your dog will thank you for it!
Group class photos (Intermediate)
We worked on Middle position, Stand, chaining together different cues (Send around cone - Go to mat - Send onto marker step), Heeling as a group and Stays with distractions.
I have been a bit slack with photos as my phone is chronically overloaded with dog photos 😁
Great job everyone, good to see you all improving with your dogs and continuing to learn and build that relationship with your best mate 👍🐾

Cooper the AmStaff had his first lesson.
After ending up in a fight he's become reactive to dogs on walks. A negative experience with another dog can often lead to insecurity during encounters. Paired with the typical bull breed excitability and some frustration from being on lead it can become a lot to handle. So his owner reached out for some help to get gorgeous Cooper back on track and they smashed their first lesson!
Practising around a calm helper dog helps rebuild confidence for both ends of the leash which is important for calmer encounters in the future.
Rhubarb is making sure to keep her mum posted about all her progress during her Board & Train 💟
What a good girl Rhubarb!
Today's Group class focused on confidence building and fostering resilience and a curious mind in our dogs.
We also covered how to introduce your dog to things like leaf blowers or vacuum cleaners. This is particularly important for timid dogs or dogs who may have a tendency to chase everything that moves. Doing it correctly can avoid a lot of issues so it's not something we want to leave up to chance.
This week's group class focused on Recall & Play.
We did some long line work, practising frequent recalls around distractions.
We also focused on play, as playing with your dog is such an important relationship building tool. We covered different ways to play using food as well as toy rewards. The dogs had fun trying out different toys. The flirt pole was a definite hit for many of the dogs!
Rhubarb the Border Collie
We welcome back Rhubarb for a 6 week Board & Train while her owner is overseas. This beautiful girl has already done private lessons and stayed for a short holiday before.
Rhubarb is a very driven Border Collie and shows some obsessive behaviours (chasing shadows or dust) as well as some reactivity to traffic and things that move fast or are noisy (motorbikes, power tools, vacuum etc).
She is also great fun to play and work with so we will be implementing lots of games and mental stimulation to give her the outlets she is craving.
I reply to every contact form enquiry so if you did not get a reply after submitting the contact form, we did not receive your message :(
If that was the case for you, please let us know.
This week's group class focused on advancing leash walking skills.
Left turns, pivots, backing up and improving communication with our dog.
We also did a mini Rally Obedience course as a challenge and I was amazed how well everyone did in their first attempt 👏👏
The new block of group classes started today.
Today we worked on "Leave It", offering eye contact and ignoring distractions.
Great work and everyone passed the hot dogs on the coffee table challenge 👏👏👏
𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞?
Guess what, you have to practise everywhere!
That's where a lot of the work goes in once your dog has learnt the foundation of the skill.
Teach your dog at home or in a low distraction environment, then take those skills on the road. In a high distraction environment your dog will likely find the same skill harder than at home. So ask for slightly less at first (e.g. shorter duration, staying closer to your dog in a stay) then build it back up as your dog is being successful with the skill in new environments.

Laser pointer guided retrieves Cooper has learnt to retrieve the item indicated by the laser pointer. This can be a great mobility help. While we may name specific items for a dog to retrieve (e.g. "Phone", "Medication") we cannot name every single item. So having another way of specifying which item to get is super helpful.

Play skills For dogs that like to play tug, the game is often one of the first things I work on during a Board & Train stay. It helps develop a strong relationship, fulfils the dog's instinctual needs and is a great reward for learning new skills. Rhubarb the Border Collie is showing a few of the things I focus on when assessing play skills. Think there isn't much to learn about playing with your dog? You'd be surprised just how much there is to it when you delve into it a little more.
Good heelwork and the ability to pivot is particularly important for assistance dogs working next to a wheelchair. Shops and other public places can be tight and being able to pivot and back up help navigate those areas. Young Cooper the Golden Retriever is learning how to stay aligned with the wheelchair to make it easier ♿🐾
Cooper the assistance dog in training loves his daily swims and leaps in with a big jump. I still expect him to show impulse control and not rush the gate, even when he can't wait to get in.
More fun with flowers 💐 Cooper the Golden Retriever showing that learning and practising skills can and should be fun. Dog training is also about being creative and showing your dog lots of different 'pictures' of behaviours and skills to make them successful in different scenarios. #becreative #havefun #assistancedogtraining #dogtraining #goldenretrieverpuppy #adit
Cooper the 11 months old Golden Retriever is an assistance dog in training and is learning the basics of a few different tasks. At this age what I'm looking for is not for a polished skill but that the dog develops an understanding of different skill concepts (e.g. use mouth to push or pull, nudge or pick up items). And most importantly to enjoy learning! #assistancedogtraining #golderetrieversofinstagram #adit #retriever
Puppy socialisation - It's a big world for a little pup Little Mabel gets nervous in new situations and I can support her through it. This was Mabel's first time at the shopping centre and she was a bit intimidated at first but got better and better. We play the "Look At That" Game and I mark her for looking at things or for looking back at me (once she is comfortable enough to offer this). What is important is that I don't distract her from the environment by continuously having food in front of her nose. I don't want her to be oblivious to what is going on around her but rather look around and choose to watch calmly and look back at me in the presence of potentially scary things.
Fun with enrichment toys Training and spending time with them is often the best enrichment we can give our dogs. But figuring out enrichment and activity toys is good for their brains too and fun for us to watch :)
Look at this amazing progress 🤩 During his first lesson Patrick was straining at the end of the leash, unable to take a single step without pulling. Reactivity to all things moving meant Patrick had plenty of extra reasons to throw himself into the leash. But Patrick is blessed with very dedicated owners keen to learn. And all the effort and time put into practising is showing. Leash walking is a fine art that can take time to perfect. But it's a wonderful feeling when it's coming together and you feel like you and your dog are a team moving as one 💞 Well done Judi and Patrick, keep up the fantastic work!
Cooper the Golden Retriever puppy is learning to place items into a container and to pass items back to me. Such a clever boy 💕🐾
See what Cooper, the super handsome & clever Golden Retriever puppy has been up to over the last weeks while staying with us for a Board & Train. The video shows some of the skills that he is learning as well as some happy snaps from his socialisation and exposure outings 🐾
When it is Sunday and you feel like training the dogs while barely moving a muscle 😁 The Treat & Train machine is definitely a favourite around here. All my dogs love it and get excited whenever they hear the beep. That is the power of a conditioned response to a marker 💪
