Dog physiotherapy.. we can highly recommend 🐕🧡🤍

I realised I have never introduced myself here & so thought it time to do so.

My name is Nicola & I am the owner of Canine Health & Rehabilitation. Originally from New Zealand, I now live on a 3.5 acre property in North West Tasmania, Australia, with my partner, three dogs (), four cats & seven sheep.

In 1997 I graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy. For the next decade I specialised in acute paediatrics, before transitioning to private practice. I still work two days a week running a private clinic in our local town, & so essentially have a hybrid business working with both humans and canines. Although I'm sure you can guess which part I enjoy more!

Like many others who work in the area of Canine Rehabilitation, my journey began when two of my own dogs tore their cruciate ligaments & we chose to manage them conservatively (following a similar protocol to how I would treat a human) rather than opt for surgery. I then began to wonder whether there was such a thing as physiotherapists for dogs ... & after some research discovered there was!

I am going to talk more about this in my next post, but for now here are ten random facts to help you get to know me better:

* I was a competitive gymnast through high school.
* I spent 10 months in Paraguay on a Student Exchange Program.
* My house was badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquake in 2011 & had to be demolished.
* My partner & I went to school together, then reconnected when we were 38.
* We then only spent six days together before I packed up my two dogs & moved to Australia to live with him.
* When I'm not working or walking dogs you can find me at the gym.
* I dislike all green vegetables.
* I’m a non-fiction fan & haven't read a fiction book for over 20 years.
* My first dog was a Labrador Retriever & I swear American Bulldogs are much easier to train!
* Our dog McCaw is actually named after & not a bird as many people think.

Then these lovely ladies are here to share with everyone our new service here at HQ! We are thrilled to share that we are now offering a grooming service hit with a twist! ✂️ ♥️

Our Purpose:

The purpose of this new addition is to be able to offer extra dedicated time, patience and a quiet low stress environment for your pooches trim and tidy. We are wanting to help make those dogs that are nervous, elderly or unsure on how to feel in a grooming environment make positive connections. We are also looking forward to sharing puppies first trims, baths and tidy ups in a positive, happy and rewarding way 🫶🏼

Our Methods:

We are using strictly force free and fear free methods, reward based training and setting the environment up for what the dog needs. We are more than happy to sit on the floor or pop them on our lap, even head outside to enjoy the views so the dog can feel more comfortable than being propped up on a table. They may even need multiple breaks through sniffing walks, time to breathe, snacks or using some of our new training components then that’s exactly what we will do! ♥️

Our Promise:

We promise that each session will be fully catered to the dog we see on the day and at that time. We won’t push the pooch over threshold just to get the job done. This means it may take a couple sessions to get the groom just right but if the dog is more comfortable and having a rewarding time then that’s what we’re after! 🫶🏼

We know not every dog is keen on a grooming salon and some dogs don’t cope with the fast paced environment. Our own Fly is one that doesn’t function well in those environments and we want to be able to see other dogs flourish like she does in an appropriate environment with a kind and loving person like her groomer, Flick 💜

We are over the moon to be able to bring a different approach to the grooming and bathing world. We are here to offer the most important aspects, time and patience 🫶🏼
