The team at Mary Valley Pet Cremation love to observe all of the National Pet Holidays and Friday 26 April 2024 was one of the more obscure holidays but still a very important one. The last Friday in April is National Furball Awareness Day. The day aims to raise awareness of out pets health and happiness. Although we have posted a funny meme this is an important topic for cat owners. The ingestion of hair creates the problem of hairballs that your cat will need to cough up, if your pet does not rid themselves of the ingested hair it may create an obstruction which will become damaging to your cats health.

While we are taking a minute today to remember all those brave men and women who have served our country and have made their ultimate sacrifice. Lets also take a minute to remember the
animals who have taken part in conflicts over time. From elephants that helped build bridges to dogs that can detect bombs, animals have always served alongside our military personnel. 16 million animals served in World War One they were used for transport, communication and companionship. Lest We Forget the loyal service of our 4 legged friends.

February 2024 is a big month for our beloved doggos. Today is international Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day.
In honour of this very special day we have shared one of our favourite healthy dog treat recipes for all our wonderful clients and their fur babies.

Banana & Peanut Butter Treats

2 Cups Oats
2 Medium Ripe Bananas
Half a cup of Natural Peanut Butter

1. Preheat Oven to 150c and line a baking tray with parchment paper
2. Grind oats in a food processor until they become a fine powder. Add the bananas and peanut butter and blend until a sticky dough is formed.
3.Roll dough on a lightly floured board (use whole wheat flour or any other dog safe flour) Use any small cookie cutter to make your shapes.
4. Lay treats onto your baking tray and bake for 25 - 30 minutes until treats are slightly puffed up. Your treats will still feel soft when you first remove them from the oven but they firm up as they cool.

Store in an air tight container for 1 week or in the fridge for 2 weeks. You can also freeze them which makes the treats firmer and keeps them fresh longer.

Do No Use Peanut Butter That Contains Sugar Or Salt.

Today is International "Walk Your Dog Day".
So whatever you are doing on your busy day today try and find time to take your four legged mate for a walk.
A walk is great for them to get the opportunity to sniff new smells and a casual stroll is a wonderful way for both of you to socialise and meet new people/dogs.

Happy Friday Everyone. I have been reflecting lately on the day I had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to my beautiful girl. It will be 4 years in in a few months that I have been without her by my side. I would love if you could share with me your experiences, stories and feelings about a beloved pet/s when the time came to let them run free over the Rainbow Bridge. Please also share any experiences you have had with the team at Mary Valley Pet Cremation.

Happy World Greyhound.
February 1 2024 is World Greyhound Day. Organised to raise awareness of the importance of protecting this breed and working towards a future where they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
To all the lucky owners of these 40mph couch potatoes you are blessed and to all the Greyhound breeders and trainers out there that already do this for their animals we value and respect you.

Happy New Year to all our wonderful clients. We hope that 2024 will be an amazing year for all of you and your beautiful fur babies. New Years Eve is normally an occasion celebrated with a fireworks display and as many of you know our pets can sometimes be very afraid of these unknown loud noises. We have put together a list of a few ideas to help your pets stay safe.
1 : Make sure they are secure and have a safe place to hide if they need it.
2 : If you are at home try and distract them with toys and soothing words of reassurance.
3 : Play some music to help mask the noise
4 : Lastly update their microchips & ID's (Just in Case)

Did you you know that there are a number of Christmas traditions involving animals?
Like the Yule Cat, definitely not to be messed with, according to Icelandic folklore this vicious cat lurks the snowy countryside ready to eat anyone who hasn't yet received new clothes for Christmas Day.
Also The Yule Goat from Sweden, a companion of St Nick, legend says that Saint Nicholas rode the Yule Goat instead of a sleigh to distribute gifts.

My favourite is the wonderful Polish tradition of "Szopki", according to legend animals are granted the gift of speech on Christmas Eve. This was believed to be a reward for welcoming the baby Jesus to earth.
So if anyone is looking for me at the stroke of midnight Christmas Eve I will be sitting with my dog trying to extract a few words from her.
If your pets could speak what do you think they would say?

I hope everyone is enjoying Cat Lovers Month. Today we thought we would continue our feature on famous cats with the story of Oskar (Oscar) better known as Unsinkable Sam. This indestructible kitty survived not only one but three major shipwrecks between May & November of 1941.
According to history Oskar started as the mascot for the German battleship Bismarck, however, when it sank in May 1941 he was seen among the wreckage and rescued by destroyer HMS Cossack. When the Cossack was torpedoed a few months later he was taken aboard the British air craft carrier HMS Ark Royal and nicknamed 'Unsinkable Sam'. Unfortunately for Sam and the crew of the Ark Royal the ship was torpedoed and sunk in November of 1941.
Sam was again rescued, it was decided that he was very quickly using up his allocated nine lives, he was given the new job of mouser in residence at the governor generals Gibraltar's office. He did eventually return to the UK where he lived out his days at the Home For Sailors where he passed away in 1955.

As promised the first of our feature on famous cats has to come from the country that has exalted these beautiful creatures for centuries, Egypt. Cats were so significant that killing one in ancient Egypt could earn you a death sentence.
Ta-Mui served as the personal pet to Crown Prince Thutmose. Thutmose was the eldest son of Pharaoh Amenhotep 3 & Queen Tiye of the 18th dynasty.
We do not know how T-Mui met her end, but after her death, she was mummified and placed in a decorated gold sarcophagus which still resides in the Egyptian museum today.
Not much is known about her owners short life, except to say he served as the High Priest of Ptah. His early death meant he never ascended the throne of Egypt.

Wednesday the 1st November 2023 is the beginning of Adopt a Senior Pet Month. November was set up to highlight the benefits of adopting a senior, there are a number of reasons to welcome an older pet into your home a few of those would be they are already used to getting on with other pets, they dont require as much exercise as a younger animal and they love to just sit and relax with you.
If you are thinking of adopting please consider giving an older pet another chance at love.

Today is officially the spookiest day of the year. For those of you who participate (&those of you that dont) just a gentle reminder from our fur family to yours to keep your babies safe.
There may be lots of little people turning up at your door in crazy costume that could upset your fur babies, not to mention the increased risk of getting into the sweets and lolly jar which is never good for our pets.
Jazzy and the team from Mary Valley Pet Cremations wish everyone a very Happy Howloween.

Since we have celebrated our beautiful black dogs its now time to pay tribute to those gorgeous, sleek black cats. Friday 27th October 2023 is a special day set aside to honour these black beauties. The day was originally set up to draw attention to adopting one of these unique felines. If you are thinking about adopting a kitty and have your heart set on an ebony moggy speak to the staff at the adoption centre as they are very particular who they allow to adopt near Halloween as black cats have been used as props in Halloween celebrations.

Sunday 1st October is National Black Dog Day. This day is set aside to encourage people to adopt dogs in darker shades. Regardless of behaviour, size, personality, breed or age black dogs are less likely to be adopted because of no other reason than their colour. This phenomenon still persists, which is why these black beauties have their own special day

Mary Valley Pet Cremation would like to advise our customers that our beautiful wooden boxes are currently out of stock. This is largely due to the fact our wonderful wood crafter Chris is feeling unwell. As all of our wooden memorial boxes are handcrafted by Chris using local timber available in the Mary Valley we are currently unable to supply. We will advise our clients as soon as we have stock available.
We would also like to take the time to wish Chris a very speedy recovery and hope he is back with us very soon
