This beautiful little female Brush-tailed Possum was found clinging to her dying mother, by the side of the road 💔.

Our volunteers are making sure that she is safe, warm and well fed. She is quite hissy, which is a good sign, and she loves her native flowers and eucalyptus tips. Our microscopy team have found coccidia oocytes or eggs in her faecal sample, so she will be in the hospital for a little longer. Coccidia are a group of single-celled protozoa species that can cause gastrointestinal disease in young or compromised patients (they are host specific, so not a risk to the humans that are helping her). Once she is clear of the parasites, she will be transferred to one of our larger pre-release enclosures.

💗 On trial 💗

He is another of our handsome, loving, boofa boys who enjoys a good cuddle and is content to just be by your side. He has been with us for 6 months and we can’t work out why he doesn’t get more interest!

Sadly Buxter did not have a great start to life, but he tries his best to be a good boy and is coming along nicely. He will require a confident foster carer, who has a yard to play in and is happy enough to take him on a walk each day. Buxter is not a fence jumper so could be placed on property with lower fencing, though he is not good with kangaroos.

He has lived with children and is suitable to be placed with other children if they are confident with dogs. While Buxter gets along with laid back medium sized dogs, he he not perfect and like many of our dogs, doesn't fit into the dog social category. Having said that with a carer willing to invest some time into him, he will mature into a wonderful family member. Buxter is also okay with cats pending a slower introduction.

We do not have kennels available to us nor do we receive government funding, and although we are NOT SELECTIVE on the dogs we take, unless a suitable carer comes forward, then we have no where for our dogs to go. Unfortunately we have decided to close intakes which is unfortunate as we are still receiving on average 7 enquiries a week for dogs with behavioural issues that have no options.

If you can foster Buxter, please enquiry via the link below or email [email protected]

Hello lovely dog lovers! Happy Saturday!

Something is a little 🐟 here at the Refuge... we are are almost out of tins of tuna and sardines! If you have a few spare cans and wouldn't mind sending them our way- we would be very grateful. Please check they are in spring water with no extra flavourings added. We have been SO lucky to have been donated lots of lovely high quality biscuits in recent weeks- but the dogs do like a little bit of added fishy flavour!

Alternatively, if you prefer you can shout us a can via our website using the link below and we will go on a supermarket sweep!

Thank you!

Tink is worried. As are we. Very worried. This is a serious post, but one we want you to read, and to act on…
Foot and Mouth Disease. A once faraway concern, perhaps a faded memory of tragic James Herriot episodes, Foot and Mouth is now on our doorstep, or possibly even here in WA. This disease just doesn’t only affect industry. It affects people with pets, heritage animal breeders, zoos, animal parks and yes, sanctuaries.
Caused by a virus, Foot and Mouth is easily spread through contaminated clothing, shoes, bags, souvenirs and animal products. While not deadly in itself, a positive case in a Sanctuary would mean a complete cull of all sheep, goats, alpacas and cows. That would include Lucas and Pearl, Queen Tofu, little Pudding, baby Bunny and Nimbus, sweet Digby, Davey and Grace… we can’t even swallow at the thought. To lose everyone we love in our care is gutting - but the risk is real, and worse still, we can’t prepare ourselves enough. We cannot access vaccine here in WA, and while we can quarantine and continue with our own biosecurity measures, we may still be at risk if neighbouring farms are impacted.
Are we losing sleep over FMDV? You bet we are 😞
What can you do? Become aware!
*Been travelling? Throw away shoes, wash your gear, don’t bring animal products home.
*Visiting a place with farm friends? Wear clean clothes and shoes, wash down upon arrival and departure.
*Been to an area where Foot and Mouth is prevalent? Do the right thing at the airport and declare your whereabouts.
*Don’t visit places with farm friends uninvited or unannounced.
*Don’t move animals without the correct waybills and paperwork.
*Contact your federal minister to do more. Australia is FMDV free - let’s keep it that way.
Please help us keep our animals safe - their lives depend on your support!
