We love and rescue small dogs, have their vet needs attended to, and then find them fantastic homes. We are a group of foster carers who help rescue unwanted dogs from Pounds and Shelters. We have all their vet work done and then care for them in our homes, and teach them how to be a loved well mannered pet. We then find the best possible home suitable for their needs.

You are so trusting.

Late Saturday night I explained I had a call from a vet hospital regarding surgery for Fig the cat. She keeps dislocating her elbow, and the vets decided amputation is the only way to go forward.

I asked you if you would help. And you sent RWL money. Even before the surgery - you sent money.

I rang the Vet Hospital early this morning and Fig is booked in today and I just wanted you to know you did something so compassionate and so trusting.

In a world where everything seems to be on fire, you made it better. In a world filled with violence and hate, personal agendas and indifference, arrogance and intolerance - you showed how to do it right.

To care for a little sentient soul - whom you don't know, together you have embraced goodness.

Thank you. I have paid the deposit for Fig's surgery, and I'll wait to hear how he gets on. I don't know how much the full amount will be - but we will manage because you donated.

Please know this is very, very special. x

We don't care if we are missing most of our teeth. Mum vitamizes my freshly poached turkey - and I say thanks by spreading it all over my splat mat.

I bossed Quinnie out of my bed last night, and I took on the dog walking past, minding his own business yesterday afternoon.

While doing so I did a gymnastic routine that astounded the parents. Call me .....Nadia.....

I like to wrestle on Mama's knee while she has a cup of tea in her hand, and I give the birds what for if they even think about flying over our back yard.

I am Power. The Grizzle. The Pow Pow.

Our darling Raffy had a groom and looks the absolute hot potato he is.
With diabetes and possible Cushings (we are stabilizing his diabetes first, and then will test again for Cushings) he has a lot to contend with.
Mum Jackie is so devoted and the work she puts in is second to none. Raffy was surrendered to us by an elderly couple who couldn't manage his diabetes, it was extremely difficult to control and it was devastating for them.

And so we stay in contact with them and send updates, and photos so they know Raffy is loved and in good hands, and receiving all of the treatment he needs.

Coming up he will be going to the lovely ladies at the Melbourne Eye Vet to check his eyes. We know he will go blind. And so we want to be super quick and on top of everything when it does happen.

Meanwhile Raffy is so happy. He is a chilled little dude and his best friend Harlem hangs out with him most days.

Have a lovely Sunday and thank you for the help with Fig the kitty. I will update you tomorrow when he is in for surgery.

Rescue never sleeps.

I've just got off the phone from a lovely local vet clinic. They have a young man who adores his cats. One kitty Fig, is a 2 yo black and white desexed female.

Her elbow repeatedly dislocates and you can imagine the pain.

He has been treating her conservatively for the past few months but it has got to the stage where she will need her front leg amputated. :(

And he cannot afford to do the surgery. The staff asked me if he could surrender his cat, otherwise she would be facing euthanasia clearly on humane grounds.

I've made a couple of calls and I have managed to get $1000 for the surgery donated by amazing people.

It will probably cost double that - so I will put up some of my art to help raise the rest.

The surgery will probably be done on Monday. Once I have permission I will send you a photo of Fig the lovely kitty.

If you want to put in a little for Fig - perhaps just list how much below - and then we can see how we go. Anyone happy to add it up as it goes?

Sometimes you can't look the other way. x

I'm getting messages from people regarding posts by LDH staff about Olive.

I'm going to say this once. Olive was legally surrendered to RWL.

RWL did a full assessment despite repeated requests to gain X-rays and a full medical history from the LDH were ignored.

X-rays, full bloods, heartworm test, and once the X-rays were through we consulted a Specialist to give his opinion on Olive's case.

Olive is now up for adoption. Like all RWL dogs we will carefully vet each application, narrow it down, and do a meet and greet, a housecheck and discuss Olive's treatment.

All of Olive's history that we have done will be available to the new family's vet.

Dogs are surrendered to us for a number of reasons. We know some instances are heart breaking, and not all people who surrender their dogs to us are bad people.

We will continue to take any dog, from any where, at any time we see fit.

If anyone wishes to contact me my email is [email protected]

Flower did well in her dental and came home safe and sound with six teeth taken out.

She inhaled her small dinner, did a lap of honour around the garden (anti clockwise as usual) and settled down for a snooze in the evening.

This morning she is happy to see me, and will no doubt be ready to tell off a few people at the front fence throughout the day.

I might need to do a fundraiser as this week we have exploded with surgeries, treatments, and appointments, and I think RWL will need your help if that's okay.

Usually we do the $5 Friday which I will put up in a minute - so if we could get a few more people doing the $5 donation I can't tell you how much that would ease things.

Today Flower is in for a dental. That will be over $1000.
Bruno's surgery was over $1000.
Walter's ultrasound was over $500. Walter had the ultrasound on his heart and he has the usual bi cuspate heart disease most Cavvies get, but he also has an arrhythmia. We now need to put him on meds to help stabilize his heart beat (more cost) before we can think about doing a dental.

Sparky needed a check over at the vets because he was in pain.
Martha had to have her meds changed because she had a severe reaction to them, so we had more meds dispensed and rushed out to her carer.

Grooming costs.

Food costs.

Raffy's specialist bill was over $2000, and it was the best thing we ever did for him. His monitors can be expensive to buy - and he needs them to regulate his levels with the Specialist able to also monitor him.

He has developed sore skin around his lips so he is off to see the vet on the weekend.

And we have booked him in for his eyes to be checked by the lovely people at Melbourne Eye Vets, so we know exactly what is happening. He will go blind, we know that. But we need more information to provide the best care for him. All of this costs.

I want to say most of the vets and specialists we work with DO give us discounts. So please don't ask the vets to do it for free. We would never suggest they do so. They have overheads and help us enormously and we feel they are an extension of RWL and are vital to our work.

Lastly the puppies Maeve and Jiminy, who have cost us over $5,000 already. Yes. We have managed to cover all of their work, but we are now faced with two more expensive appointments in the future.

When Maeve is desexed because of her heart (DCRV) she will require an anaesthetist when she is being desexed.

And Jiminy will be heading to Neurologist Sam Long in the coming weeks. We have good and not so good news there - Jiminy's bloods show his bile acid test was normal, so no liver shunt issues, yay. But his cortisol levels are below normal. 55-170 is the normal and his are 41. This can be an indication of Addison's disease. :( So we need to do an ACTH stimulation test (more cost) in the future.

Artie our foundation boy also needs a dental, but we are holding off on that for a week or so.

On top of that we will have our Griffon boys going up for adoption, and Callie who would love a home of her own. We have had some lovely applications for Olive, but I am being particular and I know I will find the right one soon.

We are organizing the beginnings of our Cake and Cookie stall which will be on Saturday May 17. Please put it in your diary.

As you know we can't do all of this without you. So a little help will go a long way this week.

Much love and kindness
Kae and the RWL girls. x

Campaspe Shire Council have actually gone from a shelter.....to a Pound......

What does this mean?

It means no adoptions from the shelter. Cats and dogs are impounded, collected by owners or not, given a number of days - and Rescue is asked to take the leftovers. Or they die.

This has been brewing for a while - and the reason the Council decided this? Money.

Rescues who are already full of unwanted animals, struggling financially to stay afloat, are asked to take on more - or death is a certainty.

It is not what I ever envisaged would happen when I started 20 years ago. The total collapse of compassion, progressive understanding but the downright greed is no surprise.

Rescue have only ever formed - because of one thing.

The system, and those implementing it - are failing the animals.

It is the only reason Rescue exists. If the system worked - imagine....no Rescue. Instead it would be a small sector with duty of care, fostering and palliative care.

Now Campaspe Shire have made this move - how many other Councils will see this as an ideal way to cut costs, and do the same. Because we all know they love to cut costs.

Local animal shelters, particularly some rural ones have been nothing short of appalling. Money was rarely spent on animals. It is always hidden away - usually beside the rubbish tip - or far from where anyone can see how they are housed.

RSPCA Vic - the supposed leading body for animal welfare in this country have decided they won't be coughing up money to care for impounded animals across our state either.

They now run four shelters. FOUR. In our entire state. Hardly leading the way. Hardly helping the animals that are their focus. Leaving local laws and councils to clean up the mess instead of using their funding to better the chances of animals and build meaningful relationships in rural areas.

So back we go to the animals. Who is caring for them?

The LDH with multiple Council Contracts to gather up animals and impound them in Cranebourne and North Melbourne - they are hardly an open facility that encourage the public through their doors. Shocking facilities in Nth Melbourne such as A block which were not up to Code 20 years ago - are still not up to Code today.

They have known they would have to move from the premises over a decade ago - but still - nothing is done to help the vulnerable who end up in there.

Puppy farmers are still pumping out puppies. We have 'Recreational" and "micro breeders" who can breed in their back yard - with their pets - and make a few thousand on the pups - without having to register as a business.

Yes, without having to register as a business. All they have to do is 'follow the code of practice' like all pet owners in caring for their dogs. No experience needed for pregnant dogs, whelping or anything. Easy money for them isn't it?

Following up on my third terse email to Ros Spence Head of the Dept of Agriculture who proudly informed me that Victoria has some of the best animal welfare laws going.

And yet here we are.....

Not much has changed in 20 years, other than Rescue growing. Good, bad, indifferent, and shockingly ill equipped Rescues.

To say the Rescuers I have been speaking to are disillusioned and exhausted can't even raise much anger any more. They are worn down and beaten by too many decisions that don't facilitate progress or change the status quo for the animals.

I think you the public need to be aware there will be those in rescue who will walk away - after serving for years with an emptiness in the pit of their stomach saying, "I can't do this anymore."

Or be looking for a way out. Because there is no way forward. The blocking, the legislation, the decisions from a few have left us exhausted from a war on justice, compassion and doing what's right with nothing.

It's as bigger mess as it was when I started, and with news breaking on more that I can't share just yet - it is only going to get worse.

Walter was in the clinic on Tuesday but unfortunately the fellow who does the ultrasounds had a personal emergency and we couldn't go ahead.

So Walter is in today for the ultrasound on his heart - and if he is okay - we will go ahead with his dental. We didn't want to do it without checking on his heart first.

Tomorrow Flower is in for a dental. It's time. It will be the first one she has had while living with us - so I am a bit nervous to say the least......

We seem to be going through a lot of surgeries and vet appointments, medications and procedures, RWL might need help in the coming weeks, but I will let you know.

Meanwhile you can see the nights have got cooler. Can you recognize who is who in all of these?

Have a lovely day folks. x

Jiminy had a blood test done yesterday for an acid bile test to rule out Liver Shunt. We are also testing for Addison's disease.

Once we get those results we will make an appointment with Neurologist Sam Long to see where the next step takes us.

Meanwhile Jiminy is a happy and very sweet little man and progressing beautifully.

Little Maeve is a cheeky and happy little girl despite her heart issue. In fact she is very inquisitive and loves to play and play. The puppies are becoming less dependant on each other as their world become bigger - and mixing with other dogs is really giving them a lot of joy.

Here is Maeve asking for a game. Go Maeve!

Bruno had a very nasty abscess on his a**l glands, and was in a lot of pain. He had a general anaesthetic and it was discovered that there are some not so healthy cells in the area - so we have taken a biopsy to be sent off to pathology. :(

We can only hope that it comes back okay. Bruno has had a life of neglect and this is so unfair.

This morning he is up and about - tail up trotting and seems in very good spirits. So we will keep our fingers crossed. x
