Being a leader doesn't mean being a tyrant.
This is the dog who hated baths.
She would put the brakes on, crocodile twist and bite her owners. To the point they were afraid of her.
So I worked on 2 fronts:
1: showed Lucy there was no other option available, so she would have to go into the bath tub and that was final. (This required a high skill level of leash pressure and control, which I Have)
2. I gradually increased the challenge, so instead of trying to do the whole wash cycle AND the drying .. the first time I washed her I only did a water rinse of her back... then second time I added shampoo... then the third time I added the dryer on a really low level and only the back etc etc.. and I slowly worked my way up to her neck and face.
This created Trust : predictability in what was going going happen, and also a full understanding of what Lucy was actually afraid off (turns out the dryer in her face and ears wasn't working for her ๐๐คฃ๐ฑ) .
Lucy trusts me because I understood her fears and was able to show her she had nothing to be afraid of if she let me lead her. ๐
Sit down, grab a coffee.
This is the story of Cherry.
Cherry was found in a gutter at 10 weeks of age.
Because of the ban on Pitbulls she was put on Death row by the authorities that be.
But the amazing people at @projectunderdogrescue managed to pull her out and got her labelled as a "staffy cross" by their vet.
Because of her breed and looks, the rescue group was worried she'd end up in the wrong hands so they asked me to foster her until they found a suitable home.
Which I did.
This is when I realised this puppy was going to be a handful.
She was a climber, a very fast runner (with zero recall) and she could clear my backyard fence so easily I lost her like 4 times in the first 2 weeks (she was only 12 weeks old!). She also showed early signs of resource guarding, which meant it was genetics and that's a hard one to fix ... This had me thinking that a "regular" family would never be able to safely contain her or keep other dogs safe from her mean attitude. If she got adopted.. she would end up in the pound for escaping or killing another dog.. and she would be put down.
I didn't need an extra mouth to feed.
But I also knew there was no other family as well equipped to keep her safe from herself than we were.
So we kept her.
And so instead of dying at 10 weeks, or spending her life chained in someone's backyard... she lived 8.5 years with us.. a family of 5 + many, with Toqui and Kusa.. and hundreds of dogs that came and went.
I don't think there's a better definition of "Living her best life" .. because I know with us..she actually did.
Cherry died this morning, she had cancer of the liver and we knew it was coming.
This past months she had been going through her little bucket list. She got to do all the things she loved, she got to say hello to all the kids in Anna's school, she got to run offleash, she got so many yummy treats and everything she wanted.
This morning, after a very long night, she got up, went outside like she had done every day of her life
Come hear the story of how I sorted out my ball fetching issues with these guys ๐
My happy place ๐พ

We hadn't done this game in ages!
A little flashback to our younger years today ๐
Happy windy morning ๐ฅฐ

What others think about your dog is really not important.
What you live with your dog is.
Learn to let go of that need to prove to irrelevant random people that your dog is a good dog and watch your walks get better with your friend ๐๐พ
Here's the story of Toqui and Jake's bromance
A little tip about human body posture and reactivity ๐
Come walk with Bronte, Luna, Groot and me :)
Come walk with Rocky, Nala and Mali
I didn't dare to move.. ๐ณ
Come play with Rocky, Nala, Jake and me :)
And then we can play! ๐พ๐

While we wait for the park to be free.. we practise impulse control.. and doing nothing.
So we work on 2 fronts :
1. We tone down the rude behaviour of stealing balls from other dogs by ending the game when that occurs, hence decresing the likelihood of that happening. The ball comes aline when Rocky is actually playing with it, not trying to steal it from someone else.
2. We reinforce the willingness of letting go of the ball when the "rude" dog takes it because there's no point fighting over it.
So all dogs get coached on different levels until they reach a ground of understanding within their group, that in the long run will also transpose to outsiders if the situation arises:
The goal being :
๐If an outsider dog comes to get Nala's ball.. which she would be very pissy about.. then now she has the "tools" to deal with that event in a peaceful manner.
๐If an outsider dog is playing with his own ball then Rocky is less likely to try and snatch it from them because that game now has no value for him.
๐พ As always: Reinforce habits that are beneficial for you and your dogs and do not affect negatively the well-being of others.
Do not let them rehearse habits that can provoke fights, misunderstandings etc ๐
More about relationships and balls ๐
(Excuse the horrible wind sound at the end ๐ฌ๐ฑ)
Come play fetch with Jake, Rocky, Nala and me. :)
