WHY DO DOGS LIKE ROLLING IN SMELLY, DIRTY THINGS?
As people we place high value on using products that eliminate and mask natural body odour and ensure personal hygiene - (Most of us anyway, I’m sure there are exceptions!)
With an endless choice of different soaps, body washes, shampoos, conditioners, deodorant, perfume, toothpaste, mouth wash, breath mints and more, we take great measures to ensure that we smell good or at the very least don’t smell bad.
So, when our dogs insist on rolling in things that don’t smell good, we find it gross and disgusting and just have to find a way to either prevent this from happening or rectify the situation as quickly as possible often by scrubbing them down with a sweet-smelling dog shampoo or baby powder scented wipes.
Why on earth can’t they just roll in a bush of jasmine, peppermint or lavender?
I believe that the real answer as to why dogs like rolling in smelly things comes down to the simple fact that we interpret smell very differently.
Dogs have an incredible sense of smell – several hundred million scent receptor cells, depending on the breed, compared to our +/- 5 million.
We assume that dogs enjoy smelling nice and clean, but what may smell nice and clean to us, may very well smell disgusting to dogs.
The products we use to make ourselves smell socially acceptable are completely unnatural in a dog’s world.
Dogs find foul smelly things far more acceptable and the stronger the foul smell, the better.
Smelly things are natural, intriguing and attractive and rolling in them may serve important purposes.
The purpose may no longer be necessary for our domesticated dogs, but their DNA still dictates that dirty, stinky things are just so irresistible.

You all know how much we love Puppy Classes but we also love when puppies come to see us for a 1on1 session!
I had the pleasure of hanging out with this absolute cutie on the weekend. His lovely humans were seeking some guidance on lead-walking and recall.
With puppies, very often the key is slowing everything down; building trust and connection as priority. From the photos it looks like Zeke wasn't doing much lead walking or recall at all....but gnawing on a stick and hanging out close to us was part of a bigger strategy to help him feel safe and supported in the outside world which ultimately helps with those other important life skills🥰

It must be a Monday thing! Cayos is telling me that he isn’t in the mood for me to start his muscle stim and clean up his eyes. He’s thinking about it though and tempted by the food! I usually give him time to think about it and if he’s really not keen we just pack up and try again later. It’s important that we give our dogs choice with things like this as it builds trust and cooperation. Have a great Monday everyone!
We haven’t posted Cayos for a while. He’s 13.5 now and happily retired on our acreage. To maintain his mobility he has fortnightly physio with Susan Yuen and I use a tens machine to do muscle stim. In the video here, I got up early before work in the hope to have some quiet time with Cayos. It didn’t quite go to plan, but at least I had some help! You can’t see the tens unit in this machine, but I’m training 2 at once! When the muscle stim increases it feels like a tingling sensation so Cayos gets higher value treats when it feels uncomfortable. This encourages him to sit quietly, and he gets treats for that, but gets higher value treats for the things that are more challenging for him. This technique can apply to most areas of training. This is why we always encourage people to bring high value soft fresh treats to training classes because it’s more challenging in a different environment with different people, dogs, and distractions.

Puppies most often need our guidance and support in navigating interactions. Although they have amazing communication skills with one another, it can be really tricky for them to meet new friends.
We need to be proactive and engaged with our puppies to ensure they can continue feeling safe and social.

Did you know that puppies can and should attend Puppy Class before they are fully vaccinated? As long as a new puppy is up-to-date with his puppy vaccination schedule, he can join in all the fun, learning and socialisation that a safe and professional puppy class involves!
Let's get the word out to new puppy parents that waiting until after the vaccination schedule is complete is running the risk of under-socialising their new puppy.

On another hot day in Perth I hope you and your animals are cool indoors. We don’t have Aircon but luckily our house is solar passive so we are managing. The wildlife outdoors were struggling a bit even with our bird baths so I decided to refresh them with cool water and add some extra stations around the garden for the wildlife and birds. It was so nice to watch them come to life and enjoy a cool drink and bath. If you have any friends with a wildlife friendly garden please share and remind them to top up a few water stations outside! Add a rock or brick to cater for most birds and insects 🐞
