It's difficult to make a deliberate choice to become aware of cruelty and abuse in any form. Much easier, and less damaging to personal wellbeing, to acknowledge its existence but put it aside. But awareness is essential if we are to become better human beings, if we are to make changes to help improve lives, if we are to replace evil with goodness, kindness, compassion and love, if we believe the welfare of every living thing matters. Feb 1 is Please consider dipping in to the world of the Galgo, and raise awareness if you have the opportunity Better animal welfare means better human welfare too. Feb 1 is World Galgo Day. Many Australians don't know of the loyal, loving and exquisitely beautiful Galgo and the atrocities they endure at the hands of their owners, the Spanish Galguero, or hunter. Galgos suffer some of the worst intentional animal cruelty in the world. http://www.diadelgalgo.com/ and https://freethegalgo.com/en/home.html will tell you more. A warning - what you will read about how Galgos are killed at the end of the hunting season is horrific and distressing BUT awareness must be raised. Galgos are excluded from animal welfare laws in Spain, and the brutal, cruel hunters can do what they like to their dogs without any retribution whatsoever. The cruelty is extreme, deliberate and depraved. There are rescue groups doing wonderful work, but the size of the problem is massive. On freethegalgo.com you will find videos of some rescue facilities. I am most familiar with Galgos Del Sol, run by the magnificent Tina Solera and her team, but there are several others and international groups too.
Please help raise awareness and

Here's the third assistance dog I want to bring to your attention. Meet Spoon the Golden Retriever puppy who is the newest recruit to AnglicareSA's Youth Services team. Spoon is set to play an important role in the lives of young people connected to AnglicareSA's independent living program for young people 16 to 18, transitioning out of the care system. Spoon goes to work each day with Leaving Care Supervisor Rinske van der Pol, where young people visit for one-on-one support. Spoon helps young people to engage with staff, and motivates them to do things to help their mental health.

Here's the next assistance dog I want to bring to your attention: Kuno the Service Rottie in Edmonton, Canada. Kuno died a few days ago, leaving his double-amputee human, Marla, heartbroken. Kuno had a huge following in Canada, and was much loved. Marla trained him herself, to do everything from collecting her mail to helping her in and out of her wheelchair - his size gave her the stability she needed. Kuno was a public advocate for inclusivity and accessibility, and people noticed because his advocacy came from a dog's perspective. Marla has been training her young dog, Chesnyy, for a while now, but Kuno was her rock. Please see Kuno on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_oKZe26_IM
Kuno's Twitter posts are about his WoofsOfWisdom, including this: Start each day with a good morning nose kiss. Make sure to lie somewhere that blocks their path so they remember to tell you how handsome you are. Get excited about that walk even if it's only 2 minutes long because it's -40. Look like you're listening when they complain about problems then bring them a ball or a tug rope because that gets rid of problems. Shove their hand into ear rubbing position. Take up lots of bed space so they can appreciate how heavy you are. And always remind them how important you are because if they're busy thinking you're amazing, then they aren't wasting time finding reasons to be miserable. This is how you keep a human trainable.

I'm writing a series of posts about Therapy, Assistance and Service dogs. Here's the first link to my blog page, about KaBoom the Therapy Greyhound from Ottawa, Canada, who sits with and comforts children as they testify against their abusers in court.

This is to tell you a little about our friend, KaBoom the Greyhound, in Ottawa, Canada. I’m telling you about KaBoom because I hear rumblings from time to time such as “why are animals important” and “why do we make a fuss about animals in bushfires”. Well, I’m a veterinarian, so it’s ...

A recent very dangerous incident prompted us to publish our aggressive dog policy on the HCVTP website. Read it here: https://www.homecarevet2pet.com.au/blog/aggressive-dogs-the-hcvtp-policy/
I'll write more on aggression and behaviour soon. Aggressive dogs are over-represented in this practice due to the nature of what we do as a mobile veterinary service. There are many reasons why dogs show aggression. The top five reasons as I see them are: (1) lack of early and ongoing socialisation (2) lack of correct training in a social setting (3) wrong dog in wrong context (4) owner unrealistic expectations and misguided/misinformed choices (5) genetics - yes, some dogs are genetically predisposed to aggression. Aggression can be linked to anxiety - another subject for another day.

Homecare Vet to Pet does from time to time see aggressive dogs. Owners must comply with our aggressive dog policy. Unless the reason for the consultation is aggression, the cause of the aggression (such as fear, anxiety or dominance) is irrelevant, and human safety is paramount. Dogs must: Be under....
