Did you also know that every container you recycle has the potential to make a real difference?

Vets for Climate Action have partnered with Return and Earn in NSW!

1. Collect eligible containers eg. Most containers between 150mL and 3L are eligible including cans (e.g. soft drinks), bottles ( e.g. beer bottles), cartons, Juice boxes or poppers. However, they must be in good condition (not be crushed or broken), be empty, and have the label attached.

2. Take them to a Return Point - NSW currently has over 600 Return and Earn return points. There are different types of return points and the best one for you could depend on how many bottles, cans and cartons you are returning and how you would like to receive your refund.

3. At the Refund Point:
a) Open your Return and Earn app AND search for Vets for Climate Action under the “CHARITIES” menu
b) Press on its tile, scroll down and select ‘Set as payout’
c) Scan your app at your local Return and Earn machine or automated depot (using Tag and Drop)

Global Recycling Day!

We have some exciting news: We have joined CDS Vic (Container Deposit Scheme Vic)!

What's that you ask?

CDS Vic is part of the Victorian Government's $515 million investment to transform the state's waste and recycling sector!

CDS Vic aims to:
-Increase recycling and reduce litter, cleaning up our environment
-Be convenient and accessible with many types and locations of refund points across Victoria
-Bring new jobs and economic opportunities for individuals, charity and community groups

Did you know it is as easy as 1,2,3 to donate to us!?

1- Collect your eligible drink containers (most single serve drink containers between 150ml and 3 litres are eligible)
2- Return them to a CDS Vic refund point
3 - Donate your refund: Veterinarians for Climate Action and enter our partner ID: C2000010159

♻️🌏 Global Recycling Day🌏♻️

Protect your pets by protecting your planet!

Every piece of waste we recycle is a step toward a cleaner, healthier world, for us AND for the animals we share it with.

Global Recycling Day is a reminder that our planet’s resources are precious, and how we use (and reuse) them matters.

With climate change and habitat destruction threatening wildlife more than ever, recycling is a simple yet powerful action we can all take. From reducing pollution in our oceans to cutting emissions from landfill waste, every effort counts toward a healthier planet.

At Vets for Climate Action, we know that protecting animals means protecting their environment. So today (and everyday), let’s all do our part: reduce, reuse, recycle, and advocate for bigger, systemic change to protect our future!

📢 Important Update: Upcoming Masterclass Postponed 📢

Due to the impact of Cyclone Alfred, we have made the decision to postpone our upcoming Masterclass to ensure the safety and well-being of our team and community. Many of our team members are in areas affected, and in times like these, safety and immediate priorities must come first.

The new date for the Masterclass is Thursday, 20th March, 2025, and the Zoom link will remain the same.

This serves as yet another stark reminder of our changing climate and the increasing severity of extreme weather events. As veterinarians and animal care professionals, we see firsthand how disasters like cyclones, bushfires, and floods impact both wildlife and domestic animals. It’s why our work advocating for urgent climate action is more critical than ever.

Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to seeing you on the new date! Stay safe, everyone. 🌏💚

🌿 Meet Janet – A valued and inspirational member and volunteer of VfCA! 🌿

At Vets for Climate Action, we are incredibly grateful for the dedication of volunteers like Janet. A passionate advocate for animals and the environment, Janet plays a vital role in our mission by writing letters to MPs, urging them to take urgent climate action for the sake of animals, people, and our planet.

Her unwavering commitment to making a difference through advocacy helps ensure that the voices of those who cannot speak for themselves are heard where it matters most. Janet’s efforts are a powerful reminder that change starts with action!

"In my veterinary practice on a Scottish island and as a government vet in Queensland, the old saying, ‘prevention is better than cure’ was the foundation for all animal care".

"It was the absence of significant preventative action for climate change that led me to join Vets for Climate Action. Because climate change has the potential to cause far more death and destruction than any outbreak of disease".

"I have always found satisfaction in reading and writing and it has been a pleasure to write articles, submissions and political letters for VfCA. But I came to realise that governments are directed by big business, including fossil fuel companies. And my letters carried little weight against such power and wealth. It was time to do more".

"So, I have written a book, dystopic fiction, set at the end of the current century in the broken land of Kanamaluka, when climate change destroys the social order and the lives of many loved ones. The heroes of the story are a few young people who have to work out how to survive and build a future for themselves".

"If anyone can help me publish my book, please contact me:"

Thank you, Janet, for EVERYTHING you do, and all you inspire! 💚

🌿 Meet Terry – A valued and inspirational VfCA volunteer, and one to be celebrated on International Women's Day! 🌿

At Vets for Climate Action, we are incredibly grateful for our dedicated volunteers, and Terry is no exception. A passionate advocate for climate action, Terry plays a crucial role in our Climate Care Program Advisory Committee, helping to shape the future of sustainable veterinary practices.

Beyond this, Terry dedicates time to attending conferences and speaking at lectures, sharing invaluable knowledge and inspiring others to take action for a healthier planet. Her commitment, expertise, and unwavering dedication make a real difference in our mission.

Terry is an autodidact and has loved formal, academic learning all her adult life.
She began her veterinary nursing career in the early 1980’s. A lot has changed since
those days, but Terry keeps abreast of the continuing changes in the dynamic
veterinary industry. She is currently a senior lecturer of animal care students and
veterinary nurses at South Metropolitan TAFE.

Her interest in climate change and sustainability began in the mid 80’s, when she
was looking to extend her animal welfare knowledge. She instinctively understood
that climate change is an animal welfare issue. Since this time, she has joined grass
roots movements and acted whenever possible to spread the word about easy
sustainable actions people can do every day.

In 2021 Terry joined Vets for Climate Action as a volunteer, a group she
enthusiastically claims as ‘her tribe’. She has contributed to the Climate Care
Program and has happily delivered lectures on behalf of VfCA to Veterinary Nurses
Council of Australia Conferences and VetEd Down-under.

Terry lives in regional Western Australia on beautiful, tall timber acreage. She lives
with her doggie Millie, two indoor cats, Kimba and Zelda and husband Mark. Living
on the property sustains her love, fascination and wonder of the natural world.

THANK YOU, Terry, for everything you do! 💚🐾

Their dedication inspires us all, and at Vets for Climate Action, we are immensely grateful for their tireless efforts.

To every woman working to create a better future, we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you! 💚✨

🔥🙏 Our thoughts are with those affected by the fires in WA & VIC

🔥As devastating bushfires rage across Western Australia and Victoria, our hearts go out to the people and animals caught in their path. These fires are destroying homes, displacing communities, and causing unimaginable suffering, not just for humans, but for millions of animals who face injury, habitat loss, and an uncertain future.

🙏We want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank the veterinarians, vet nurses, wildlife carers, and first responders who are working tirelessly on the frontlines to save and treat injured animals. Your dedication and compassion in the face of such heartbreaking devastation is nothing short of heroic.

🐾 What these fires mean for animals:

🔥🐾 Burn Injuries & Smoke Inhalation – Many animals suffer painful burns or struggle to breathe due to thick smoke.
🌿Loss of Habitat & Food Sources – Native wildlife, livestock, and even pets are left without shelter, food, or water.
💔Displacement & Orphaned Young – Many young animals lose their parents, leaving them vulnerable and in need of urgent care.

This isn’t just a tragic summer, it’s a stark reminder of our changing climate and the increasing severity of extreme weather events. We must act now to reduce emissions and protect our planet, before more lives, both human and animal, are lost to these unnatural disasters.

💚To everyone affected, and to those working to help - we see you, we thank you, and we stand with you.

🌪️🙏 A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Veterinary Heroes in the Wake of Cyclone Alfred 🙏🌪️

🌪️As Cyclone Alfred approaches Southeast Queensland and northeastern New South Wales, bringing with it the threat of destructive winds and heavy rainfall, we are reminded of the profound impact such natural disasters have—not only on human lives but also on the countless animals that share our environment.

🙏In these challenging times, we extend our deepest gratitude to the veterinarians and veterinary nurses who stand ready on the frontlines, prepared to provide critical care to animals affected by this cyclone. Your dedication ensures that pets, livestock, and wildlife receive the attention and medical support they desperately need during and after such events.

🐾The repercussions of Cyclone Alfred will be felt across a vast array of species:

Displacement and Habitat Loss: Many animals will lose their homes due to flooding and structural damage, leading to increased vulnerability and stress.

Injuries and Health Risks: The chaos of the storm can result in injuries from debris, exposure to the elements, and heightened risk of disease due to compromised living conditions.

Food and Water Scarcity: Destruction of natural habitats and contamination of water sources can lead to shortages of essential resources for both domestic and wild animals.

🐾These challenges underscore the critical role of our veterinary professionals, who not only address immediate medical needs but also contribute to the long-term recovery and well-being of affected animal populations.

🙏We are profoundly grateful for your unwavering commitment and the compassionate care you provide. Your efforts are vital to the resilience and recovery of our communities—both human and animal alike.

🐾💚Stay safe, and thank you for being the guardians our animals need during these trying times.

👏 Making sustainable veterinary care easier👏

In fantastic news Australian vets will be able to save more on their energy bills with the Government announcing cheaper loans for rooftop solar, electric vehicles and EV chargers.

Because veterinarians are recognised in the new health classification system, they can access this initiative for healthcare providers and access energy-saving programs, reducing power bills and supporting sustainable practices.

This is a big win for those who care for our pets, livestock, and wildlife! 🐶🐱🐴

And a huge step towards making essential healthcare—both human and animal—more affordable and sustainable. 🌱💡

🚨 Tropical Cyclone Alfred: Important Advice for Pet and Horse Owners 🚨

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is now forecast to make landfall in Brisbane’s northern suburbs, with the worst impacts expected to the south of the system, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

It has been upgraded to a Category 2 overnight and is likely to maintain that intensity as it approaches the coast.

🌪️ Now is the time to ensure your animals are safe. Preparation is key!

🐶 For Pets:
✅ Keep them indoors in a secure, quiet space.
✅ If your pet struggles with storms, contact your vet about calming strategies or medication for storm phobias.

🐴 For Horses:
Before the Cyclone:
✔️ Identify the safest paddock
Choose a high area free from large trees, powerlines, and loose debris.
Avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding.
✔️ Remove rugs and halters
Rugs can become waterlogged, get caught on fences, or restrict movement.
Halters may become a hazard if caught in debris or fences, especially in rising floodwaters.
✔️ Ensure horses are identifiable
Tag your horse’s mane or use a livestock grease marker to write your phone number on their coat.
This helps in case fences come down and horses wander.
✔️ Check fences
Ensure fences are secure but visible to help horses navigate in strong winds or heavy rain.
✔️ Minimise flying objects
Remove loose items like buckets, jumps, and feed bins that could become dangerous projectiles.
✔️ Stock up on essentials
Ensure you have enough food, clean water, and necessary medications for several days.
✔️ Plan for evacuation
If you’re in a flood zone, identify a safe location to move your horse before roads close or waters rise.

After the Cyclone: Assess and Support
🔹 Check fences and property — Walk the property carefully for damaged fences, debris, or contaminated water.
🔹 Watch for injuries — Inspect your horse for cuts, swelling, or signs of stress.
🔹 Provide clean water and safe feed — Floodwaters may contaminate drinking water and spoil feed, so ensure fresh supplies are available.

⚠️ Please Note: These are general guidelines. Every property, horse, and situation is different—make decisions based on your specific circumstances.

📢 Stay informed with weather alerts and follow official advice to keep yourself and your animals safe.
