Just a little warning regarding the Christmas treat many stores are selling for dogs at Christmas.

Many of these so-called treats end up with the dog "enjoying" some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas.

The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.

On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde. If that wasn't bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Leave them in the shop where they belong or if some well-meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away for later, then dispatch in the bin!

TANILBA BAY VET GRADUATION DAY: This very committed little group shrank when two other puppies moved to alternate venues. Not to be deterred, we put heart and soul into giving these pups the best variety of new experiences we could. Puppy school is the safe “middle ground” where puppies can learn about many facets of the outside world while they are still not fully vaccinated for exposure to the big wide world. Looking forward to guiding these puppy graduates through our next stage of learning which is called “Good Manners” training. 🎓🐶🎓🐶

SALAMANDER PUPPY SCHOOL GRATUATION: A small group but some very committed participants and some valuable lessons learnt. It was lovely to watch the participants listen and not their heads, confirming that they now understood better the best way to approach their dog when aiming to train them. Very satisfying for the trainer as well as the dogs. Can’t wait to continue the journey with you, in our Good Manners course next year! 🎓🐶🎓🐶

What an epic 4 weeks it’s been! These pups have been busy mastering their skills, nailing focus exercises, and rocking their desensitisation work like true champions! 🐾💥 You’ve all put in the effort, and look at those results – tail wags, happy faces, and plenty of progress!

REACTIVE REHAB THIS MORNING: Amazing progress in today’s lesson as Apollo the German Shepherd moves closer to the group in only his second lesson, Willow the Jack Russell x Rottweiler returns to regroup after being attacked recently 😱and Jasper the Poodle continues to practise “indifference” to other dogs in quite close proximity. So heartwarming to see these reactive dogs accepting the increasing challenge of having dogs at a closer range than ever before! #reactivedogtraining #reactiverehab

REACTIVE REHAB: Two new pupils joined us today to learn to trust and relax around other dogs, in a safe and calm environment. One was Jasper the 7 year old Toy Poodle and Apollo the 5 year old German Shepherd Dog. As you will see in this video, we adapt distance and distractions to a level at which each individual dog can cope. Sound on to hear commentary. #reactiverehab #reactivedogtraining
