All financial donations over $2 to Bat Rescue South Australia are now tax deductible.
This is our busiest time of year, it costs a lot for specialised bat milk, bottles, teats, juice, high protein supplement, fuel costs for rescues, fruit, mealworms, and release fees just to name a few things that as volunteers we need to raise money for.
If you would like to make a donation we can provide you with a tax deductible receipt.

We feel the need to respond to the very negative news articles last week about the flying foxes eating all the cherries, driving up the prices.
Bats are NOT the only species eating the cherries. Sure they eat some but are not the sole problem yet seem to be getting the full blame.
We saw the footage showing nibbles out of the cherries. Bats do not nibble cherries. They will take the whole fruit, fly off and eat it elsewhere. They will pulp the fruit to get the juice and then spit the pip and roughage out.
Lorikeets, rosellas are the nibblers. If farmers would only learn how different species eat they would know that missing cherries may mean bats have been there but nibbled and left fruit is the work of birds, rats etc.
Please share this to educate people. It is not just the bats. So why are they getting 100% of the blame? Because it’s easy as people believe bats are bad thanks to the media and Hollywood portrayal of them.
Learn your species, then you will understand. 🦇🦇
BATS ARE NOT THE SOLE CONSUMERS OF CHERRIES IN THE ANIMAL WORLD.

5 baby microbats rescued today. Fallen from their hot roost in the roof and out in the sun this afternoon. They will be hydrated and hopefully as soon as tomorrow’s heat passes we can get them back in the roost with their mums.
This is a normal occurrence for bats that roost in roofs to come to ground on a hot day. Please call us for advice as it may be as simple as getting you to mist spray them during the day or if heat affected then bought into care.

Bat Rescue SA all set up at the Mawson Lakes Market at the Watershed

Here is a link to view a video one of our rescuers took at the Adelaide colony. They found an orphan on the ground, mum was circling and calling. They placed the baby into a tree and mum and a friend flew in to take baby back.
Pleased to say we have less babies in care due to the fact we have so much success reuniting mums and babies.
If babies are uninjured and mums are circling/calling then taking their baby is outright kidnapping. Watch the video to the end, it’s amazing to watch this mums determination.
Thankyou to Anj & Elian for reuniting and getting this great video.

Lucas and Squeak, all such different personalities. Lucas is the big , tough strong boy on the left. Love his white patch on his snout. Only time he is this angelic looking is after a bottle.
On the right is Squeak, playful and inquisitive with those big eyes.

Sunday 1st December Bat Rescue South Australia will be at The Watershed Cafe Markets. 665 Salisbury Highway at Mawson Lakes. 9am-2pm.
Come along and chat bats, find out how you can help or just come along and browse our bat merchandise. Fantastic reasonably priced stocking fillers for Christmas. As always we will have our very popular crocheted bats for sale. Highly recommend you come for breakfast or lunch in the cafe. The food is amazing and staff friendly. We hope to see some of our supporters there.
Did you know the Wetlands the cafe is situated on is home to several microbat species. 🦇🦇🦇

Another crazy day for rescuers and our awesome vet.
This morning started off tragically with 2 bats, both with badly broken wings needing euthanasia. Rousing our vet out of her warm bed to assist, she is a real gem and we could not do what we do without her and her amazing staff.
These were followed by an injured microbat at Belair, a removal of a bat caught in barbed wire and a baby flying fox needing rescuing in Botanic Gardens. All 3 hopefully viable.
Days like this Bat Rescue really appreciates our rescuers, carers and vets and the caring public that call us to help.

And the rescues continue. A little microbat with alopecia. A ailment we often see in microbats and very treatable.
And 2 more orphan flying foxes. A tiny boy just over a week old and a 6 week old little boy. A real difference in ages now with our carers.
Fingers crossed no more rescues today.

Awake, then asleep. Baby bats need a lot of sleep in between feeds to thrive. Lack of sleep can cause babies to suffer. So we feed, clean, exercise and put to bed. It’s a routine carers folllow 4-5 times per day depending on the age of the bat.
