🚨 Why is riding your horse on an empty stomach detrimental to their gut health? 🚨

Acid in the horse’s stomach sits in the glandular portion of the stomach. The non-glandular portion of the stomach is above the non-glandular section.

When a horse moves with an empty stomach, these acids splash up and can cause burns and ulcers in the non-glandular portion of the stomach.

Feeding forage before you ride can help to create a acid cap in their stomach to help prevent the splashing of stomach acid up into the non-glandular portion of the stomach.

Fibre and forage is important for gut health, providing your horse with quality fibre in their diet can aid in the prevention of ulcers.

Testimonial ✨

‘I decided to change Frank's feed after after he had kissing spine surgery and a period of box rest. His condition had dropped and he'd lost the shimmer to his coat. I tried him on the CoolStance Copra and the B1 Cool Mix supplement as he started his ridden work again, his coat is now gleaming and his overall body condition has greatly improved. I have been very impressed by both the advice given about the best products for Frank and the products themselves. Thank you!’

Let's talk : greasy heel, mud fever and cracked heels in horses 💬

Greasy heel is the result of a dermatitis or infection which is situated below the rear of the fetlock and the heel. Once this infection has moved up to the canon area it is referred to as Mud fever.

This disease is most common in horses that are in an environment where their feet are constantly wet. This moisture rids the horse's skin of protective oils allowing bacteria to enter the softened/broken skin.

Greasy heel is caused by a bacterial infection of the skin surrounding the heel. The way to prevent greasy heel is to make sure that your horse is free from an environment where their hooves are constantly wet. Keep hair around the fetlock dry and clean and clipped if the breed has feathers. Treating horses that have greasy heel means cleaning the affected area and removing the scabs to let oxygen into the wound to expose and kill any bacteria.

There are many medicated shampoo's available to assist in the healing and disinfection. Coconut oil is reported as a natural alternative as due to the anti-microbial effects of the medium chain triglycerides (MCT's). Feeding an oil rich diet also aids the skin to prevent drying out.

“I have used UlcaBuf now for over 18 months on my hard-working endurance horses. I love this product as it has saved me so much money in not having to treat for ulcers. I have had no issues with ulcers at all and now have happy horses. It is the best preventative product I have ever used.

When coming up to competition days I also use Clean Culture twice a day 3 days prior to competition and 3 days post competition. This supports their stomach with the added stress and keeps them eating well.

Our horses are always complimented on their good gut sounds at Endurance Rides. I wouldn’t be without these two products in my stable.” Alison, Lockleigh Park.

Check out THAT shine!✨

"I was hoping to send pic of my boy Monjestic Bay. He is 22 years old and has been fed CoolStance Copra for 20 years. His coat has always looked amazing from it. We recently competed at the Victorian Arabian championships. People were amazed of his age and his condition and that fantastic coat. He was placed champion purebred veteran and top 5 purebred non-pro male. He is my boy. I bred him. So he is very much loved :) "

Have you grown out of your pony or seen one you wish was bigger?? Don't be a fool and try UpSize! This unique formula is designed to increase your horses size by 1 hand per night (up to 18hh). It includes used caterpillar cocoons, dried and re-moistened rosehips, wishbones and copper pennies (to pay the gods).

UpSize is the perfect supplement if you want to take your horse riding to the next level. If you've out-grown your pony, think your small horse is just not good enough, or would like to jump higher then UpSize is the product for you. Don't listen to the men that say 'Size Doesn't Matter" because it does.

Caterpillar Cocoons also known as Chrysalis, are where the caterpillar’s body performs metamorphosis to transform into a butterfly. Its magical properties and role in maintaining and growing joints, muscles, bones and organs are why we have included it in UpSize.

Our Rosehips are ethically sourced from Witches working against the Patriarchy in a remote village north of Ireland. It is a plant used for centuries as an offering to the woodland spirits to support your horse’s growing stage. It may also offer anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to support your horse through the many changes and challenges of growing up to 18hh.

Wishbones are known to stimulate the horse’s normal reaction to growing, and are more potent than any other ingredient on the market. It works by stimulating the collagen in your horse’s body and beginning the growth stage. It is a highly stable ingredient and supports normal bone, organ, coat, ligament and tendon growth.

Feeding Guide: Feed 2 scoops per night and throw a pinch over your shoulder. Lower the rate to 1 scoop per night to maintain current size or when horse reaches 18hh.

Caution: Horse will shrink to original size over 14 days when you stop feeding UpSize. No suitable for humans or goldfish. Happy April Fools 😉

✅ WHAT HORSES WANT YOU TO KNOW WEDNESDAY

⚠️ ZERO CARBS – NO GRAIN
With human diets, low carb or zero carb is the latest fad in dieting. With cats and dogs, the phrase is ‘No grain or zero grain’. It is time for this trend to become hot in the equestrian world.
Horses too, will benefit greatly from a low grain, low carb (starch) diet.

✅ FIBER
Horses have developed over millions of years on a diet of mostly fiber. Grasses and plants contain fiber, oil (fatty acids), and protein (amino acids). They also contain vitamins and minerals. Everything a horse needs for a healthy gut, functional gut bacteria and the building blocks for healthy cells. This is how horses, like most herbivores are build. The ‘downside’ of this, is that horses need to consume these grasses and plants almost around the clock, to derive enough nutrients from them to stay in excellent shape.

ENTER HUMANS WHO PUT HORSES TO WORK
Alas, many thousand of years ago humans recruited horses to work for them in all sorts of areas. Thus when a horse needs to transport a human 12 hours a day, there is no time to eat for 20 hours a day. Humans, always finding solutions for self made problems, came to the idea to start feeding horses grains such as spelt (ancient wheat), oats and barley. This worked, the horses had energy and stayed in shape, without having to eat all day, every day.

👉 FOR THOUSAND OF YEARS THERE SEEMED NOTHING THE MATTER
Until the mid-20 century when horses started to experience more and more problems such as:
- Navicular syndrome
- Sweet itch
- PPID (Cushing)
- Obesities
- Insulin resistance
And later in the 21st century muscle diseases such as PSSM, which almost seems an epidemic.

❌ THE PROBLEM IS THE GRAINS AND STARCH IN THE FOOD
In my experience, the grains and starch in the modern horse feed is the problem. Grains and starch are packed with carbs which are to the body nothing else than sugars.
Consumption of constant sugars raises insulin resistance, which in turn messes with the hormonal balance (as insulin is a hormone), which as a result can cause all other sorts of problems with the immune system, of which the latest research in humans even suggests; cancer, but also many the same health issues as horses suffer. Next to that, horses are designed to function on gut bacteria formed from fiber, NOT sugar. A gut full of bacteria based on sugar functions differently and does not support the horse’s health and suppresses the immune system as well.

⚠️ WHY IS THIS A PROBLEM NOW, WHEN IT WASN’T FOR THOUSAND OF YEARS
👉 Different grains
The grains of the past were not ‘refined’ or altered (GMO), not grown with artificial fertilizer (which lacks important nutrients, the soil is now depleted off in many areas), not sprayed with herbi- and pesticides, and not processed into paper or plastic bags and packed with harmful food additives.

👉 Drastic decline of the daily workload
Horses of the past had to work many hours a day, burning off the much cleaner grains at that time. Still not ideal but better for the horse’s health, then the situation we have today.

✅ WHAT TO FEED INSTEAD
So, what do we feed instead then? Fiber, fat, protein! In my (vast and long experience) many health problems lessen or disappear after starting horses on a CLEAN DIET. No grains, no starch, no sugar, and no chemical additives. Check your horse’s feed label for the ingredients and the additives. Then decide you want to start your horse on a clean diet. Start researching which feeds are best and are available to you in your area.
- Preferably organic hay (not haylage)
- Safe and limited grass (I’ll do a post on that next Wednesday!)
- Linseed (flax seed)
- Beet pulp (organic where possible)
- Straw
- Alfalfa
- Sun flower seeds
Are a few good options to start with. You can add herbs such as curcuma, cinnamon and nettles to the feed and of course Himalaya rock salt.

🦄 Next week I will explain about safe grass.

Hoof Health - from the inside out 🥥

Nutrition plays a vital role in hoof quality and health. Horses will show dietary deficiencies and imbalances in many different ways - some, for example, will present with poor quality hoof while others will have faded coats or reduced performance.

Hoof quality can be reflective of the horses overall health for the previous twelve months. It can take up to twelve months for full recovery of hoof quality after the diet has been corrected.

Poor quality hooves are characterised by a loss of structural integrity and typically have a slow growth rate. Hooves are composed of 90% keratin which is an insoluble protein. Good quality protein sources such as CoolStance Copra are recommended to help correct protein deficiencies in the diet and supporting vitamin and minerals (such as VitaStance) work in harmony to improve general health and well being.

Tying-Up 🤕

Otherwise known as azoturia is a term used to describe muscle disorders affecting some breeds of horses. Horses suffering with tying-up may experience painful muscle contractions, stiffness, profuse sweating, and elevated respiratory rates during or following exercise.

There are actually two distinct forms of tying-up, known as polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) and recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER).

The feeding of grain will often increase the occurrence of PSSM and RER in susceptible horses. Grains provide energy in the form of sugar and starch. Starch is broken down in the small intestine and absorbed into the bloodstream as glucose. For horses affected by PSSM, feeding high starch diets increases the circulating insulin concentrations, leading to storage of an unusual polysaccharide in the muscles. This may increase the chances of the tying up occurring in some breeds of horses. For horses with RER, high starch diets often contribute to the horse being highly excitable and nervous, making the horse more susceptible to tying-up. In a nutshell, feeding grain to susceptible horses may increases the risk of tying-up.

How can CoolStance Copra help?

Research has shown that horses with PSSM and RER both benefit from a low starch diet (

'Why is Copra brown in colour?'🥥

One of our most frequently asked questions here at Stance Equitec.

Most people think that Copra is going to be white in colour as only the white part of the coconut is used. If we left CoolStance Copra in it's 'desiccated' form it would be too energy dense for our horses. So a heating process is applied to extract some of the coconut oil which ultimately toasts the coconut and naturally alters its colour. 🥥

How can CoolStance Copra assist with energy?

In contrast to cereal grains, CoolStance Copra is a safe, well digested and readily utilised source of energy for horses. The use of oils reduces the reliance on cereal grains in the diet and reduces the negative impact grain can have on equine health.

Copra is great for supporting stamina and muscle recovery. It increases muscle glycogen storage capacity and reduces reliance on glycogen for energy generation during exercise. 🐴

“My endurance horse can be very difficult to manage in the first leg of an endurance ride. He pulls, chases and grunts his way around the first leg and has even been known to throw in a good bolt. In the second leg and beyond though, he is brilliant.

I was preparing to enter our first 160km ride and was concerned about how difficult my horse would be at a midnight start in a large group of fresh, fit horses. I started him on placid rein a month prior to the 160km ride after hearing many positive things about this product from other endurance riders. The midnight start came and I walked him up to the start line not knowing what to expect from him. He walked calmly but was his usual alert self. He watched the other horses ride out. We walked over the start line and I reluctantly asked for a trot. To my surprise he trotted strongly but calmly. We trotted down the road in a group of horses and he was calm and responsive. I couldn’t believe it. He completed the first 40km with the least amount of attitude I’ve had to date and I can only attribute this to putting him on Placid Rein. Second leg and beyond, he was as brilliant as always.

I highly recommend this product for calming nervous and highly strung competitive horses.” Vanessa
