THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BREEDERS & PETSHOPS
&
THE CURRENT PUPPY MARKET
Well itâs obvious isnât it? Apparently not!!
When I receive phone calls or messages enquiring about my puppies or whether I can recommend other breeders I do so in good faith that once I find out enough about you and what you are looking for I can refer you to other respected and ethical breeders. I highly encourage you to have a set of questions to your chosen short list of breeders and from there you should gain a good feeling/vibe who might be right for you in order to purchase a puppy from.
When a breeder opens up their personal home to you there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes in preparation for that visit to take place. This is their home. They are not a pet shop and there is a massive difference between the 2. Your ethical breeder does this as a hobby, their passion to breed the best they can within the breed standard. This is not a business, they are lucky if they even break even alot of the time. You are possibly not their only buyer so their home is being visited by a number of buyers not just you. Communication is vital too. When a breeder is trying to set up a mutually convenient time for a visit, please respond. Itâs rude to say leave it for a week and then expect the breeder to be available with an hours notice.
I have recently had several buyers contact me who I have given them a 3 highly recommended breeders to contact. These buyers have stated they are now ready for a puppy. At the time those litters were 6 weeks old. After a lot of stuffing around those litters are now 10 weeks old and the buyers come back that the pups are either now too old, too big or the breeder is unwilling to discount their already discounted puppy. NO WE ARE NOT A PETSHOP!!!!!!!!
Inflation, interest rates, Covid all have an impact on the market as a whole but those same influences also affect the dog industry too. An over supply of puppies devalues the price. Breeders who continue to pump out litter after litter in a time when the market is poor and struggling in my opinion is not doing the best by the breed or their fellow breeders. They are there for themselves and not the breed. Those breeders are being watched, talked about and generally are avoided by your ethical breeder!!
Currently there are many good breeders putting litters on hold including stud dog owners limiting the use of their stud dogs not because they donât value the Bitch in question but because they too have a responsibility to breed responsibly as well, you simply donât have a litter if you donât have buyers for that litter.
So if you are currently thinking or considering a puppy now is the time to do so because in 6 months time the market then may well have dried up with no litters available. In essence, an over supply of puppies and not enough buyers devalues a breeders litter. When you find the puppy market sparse, breeders then have the ability to increase their prices due to lack of litters available and an over supply of buyers. This mightnât sound nice but that is how the world keeps turning.
In closing, whether your a potential
Puppy Family or a Breeder, be true to yourself, donât play with people, respect each other and be kind!! This big wide world isnât always as big as u might think it is. We are all under the radar but which side we fall on is up to you!!!!!!!!
