Patient Update !

Meet Latte, the long haired dachshund that presented for lameness as a result of an angular limb deformity of the tibia ("bent/angled shin bone").

To improve the angulation and create a more functional/straight leg Dr. Chris meticulously planned a tibial osteotomy. This involves removing a wedge of bone to allow for space to straighten the bone. The was then stabilised with a titanium plate and screws.

Latte looks nervous but its safe to say we were confident in the repair.

This weeks update !

They say good good things come in threes but sometimes they come in fours. Dr. Chris has had a huge couple of weeks with some major surgeries on the books.

We had 4 patients requiring spinal surgery arrive at the hospital all within a short period of time and currently they are all recovering very well.

All our patients receive the same level of care but when we have long term patients we tend to learn their names, personalities and similarly they learn ours 🤣

From left to right:
Meet Glitch who had spinal instability requiring fixation with screws and rods. Followed by Poppy, Poppi and Sunny - these 3 all had interverbteral disc disease or a slipped disc requiring a surgery called a hemmilaminectomy.

Nurses: Angela and Lucy

These patients required surgery URGENTLY and we made sure we were available to perform the surgery and provide the care they needed at all times.

If you have questions whether simple or complicated give us a call or send us an email/DM. If your concern is urgent please come down to the hospital.

We are also now taking online booking - CLICK THE LINK BELOW

Meet the Team !!

Dr. Daisy Fung started her veterinary career with Colyton Veterinary Hospital in 2017 after graduating from the University of Sydney. She enjoys seeing a variety of cases in a general practice setting but has an interest in internal medicine.

She left CVH for a short period of time to pursue a medicine internship at a specialist referral hospital, working alongside well-known internists focusing on complex medical conditions such as auto-immune disease, endocrine, renal, respiratory and neurological disorders. Upon completing the internship and further studies, Daisy rejoins the team in 2022 to apply her newfound knowledge and skills in complicated medical work ups.

Most recently Daisy achieved membership status in the field of small animal medicine. There are approximately 15000 vets in Australia and only a few hundred take this vigorous 5 hour examination each year.

Daisy currently works Monday to Friday.

At Colyton Vet we believe in always learning and improving. Our vets have the same value and this is the only way we can continue to provide advanced medical care.

Ruby is an energetic pup that brings nothing but joy and smiles to her family.

Her pet parents noted that she was starting to lose weight as she was growing older. Ruby was diagnosed with a portosystemic shunt at our hospital. This is an abnormality of the blood vessels where the blood bypasses the liver. This can lead to weight loss, lethargy, vomiting, depression and seizures.

Dr.Bao and D.Chris joined efforts to operate on Ruby. She had a smooth recovery and more recently returned for desexing. Ruby also brought along her sister. Together they are the cutest pair !!

12/07/2024

Take 3 - Rain, hail or shine. We will always be there for your pets !!!

CVH is open 7 days a week providing advanced veterinary care to the pet patients of Sydney.

We welcome back some old faces - Dr. Daisy and Dr. Franco are returning to the hospital at a full time capacity after undergoing additional training in medicine and surgery.

STOP AND LOOK 🦷 🦷 🦷

What do you see?

This is a full set of teeth. There is evidence of gingivitis, mild bone loss, plaque and tartar formation.

Dental disease can sometimes be overlooked with our busy life style. The next time you check your dog, have a look at their teeth as well and if you can’t, maybe we can help.

We will be commencing free dental checks with our nursing staff in the near future. Stay tuned.

There’s no argument that puppies are cute and are a source of joy. But taking care of them means making compromises for their well being. Once born they need be kept warm and nursed every 2-3 hours before they can start eating solids closer to 6 weeks of age.

We ain’t going to lie, adoptions are at an all time low and we have dogs waiting to come into care that simply can’t until dogs already in care find their forever families.

Lacey is a super sweet Lab mix, she arrived from a local pound with a severely ruptured cruciate which our friends at Colyton Veterinary Hospital repaired. Her amazing foster carer, Carolyn has nursed her back to health but now it’s time she finds a family of her own.

Lacey is a shy girl, she’s most comfortable on the lounge watching daytime tv, the outside world still scares her although she is getting braver she does need a home that can continue to build her confidence and provide her with a safe and secure environment for her to thrive in. 🏡🩷

Lacey is low key, she is comfortable at home whilst her carer is at work and doesn’t require extensive amounts of exercise. She’s house trained and apart from a high quota of pets and belly rubs her needs are not high.

If you want to learn more about Lacey, check out her profile 👇🏻👇🏿👇🏽

Raw food or kibble?

Answer: Simple. It is what’s best for the patient/pet.

No 2 animals are the same and the recommendation is based on the individual.

The quality of the food is also very important

Now this is something we don’t see every day!
How many toes can you count?
Is there an extra toe or are we missing a toe ?

This is called “polydactyly” a congenital condition that has led to the development of an extra toe. Dr. Chris attended to this patient to improve his gait. Often it doesn’t cause any issues but for this baby it affected the way he walks.

Comment to let us known how many toes you count?

Cherry eye (Prolpase of the Gland of the Third Eye Lid)

Cherry eyes appear as a growth at the corner of the eye, often raised and pink. The cause of the condition is not completely clear but has been suggested to be related to increased pressure. This problem is commonly seen in bracycephalic dogs including maltese, bull dogs, shih-tzu but can occur in other breeds as well.

A pocketing technique is used to hide/repair the gland. The risk of recurrence is approximately 1-2%.

Pepper's Amazing Recovery

Pepper presented to our hospital a few months ago for hind limb paralysis and was diagnosed with a slipped disc (IVDD - Intervertebral Disc Disease). To give context to the situation there are up to 5 grades for this disease and unfortunately she was grade 5.

What does this mean?
A patient with IVDD and grade 5 clinical status means they are paralysed with no sensation or deep pain to the back legs. This is the most severe form of this disease. Statistically speaking only 50% of patients recovery if surgery is performed within 48hours of the noted injury. Very few recover without intervention.

How was the problem diagnosed?
The diagnosis was made via physical examination with our vet which followed on with a CT scan of the spine.

What treatment did Pepper have?
Pepper had a very dedicated family that elected to perform surgery. After surgery she stayed in hospital for an extended period of time for physiotherapy and rehabiltation. Pepper continued to have physiotherapy at home once discharged but still has residual signs of spinal injury. She is however, able to self ambulate.

The videos are a few months apart and she is progressing well. We are hoping she makes a further recovery over time.

Dean is one of the friendliest labradors we have met.

He presented to the hospital for lethargy/weakness and was promptly diagnosed with free fluid in his abdomen after seeing Dr. Bao. The diagnosis was made through an ultrasound scan. The scan also noted that the fluid was likely a result of a bleeding mass on Dean’s spleen.

Initial stabilisation was performed and Dean had surgery to remove the bleeding growth. After a few blood transfusions and some time in hospital he is now resting at home.

Dean sits happily with our nurses Cameron/Yvonne and junior staff member Mya.

Rabbits are small mammals that graze throughout the day to keep their digestive tract moving. When we choose to neuter rabbits we always need to ensure that after surgery they continue to eat. All rabbits are fed after surgery and if they are not interested, is a convenient way of allowing us to manually feed them.

If your rabbit does not eat at home after surgery it is very important to contact your vet and advise them of the situation
