These poor darlings have Metabolic Bone Disease .
When rescuing a little pie in the park a few weeks ago I met many beautiful kind ladies who came just to feed the flock ( tiding or mischeif is the correct term) .
This is always difficult for us as rescuers, knowing the impact on the birds, but also knowing this act comes purely from love and not wanting to make well meaning birds lovers feel bad.
Most experts say just don't feed them at all, but once you have a connection I know it's hard to break. I am a wildlife carer but i am not an expert so will add more info to this post as it comes. . Being Spring, mums and dads are feeding what ever they are given to their babies. They are the ones who suffer from this the most.
You can keep your friendship up and not harm them by buying meal worms, digging worms from your garden, crickets or the easiest is a product called 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗲. This can be used for Ravens, Kookaburras and Currawongs also. It has calcium and all the important vitamins. Obviously prepared to mimic their natural food source.
It lasts forever in the cupboard as it's a dry mix. I boil eggs and mash it with 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗲 and water. You can make little balls.

As always if you find a bird in need, even if you're unsure. Please call Wildlife Victoria
Phone: 8400 7300 for advice, and experienced assessment and to get them to a carer for the right treatment. Just a reminder it is illegal to keep Wildlife without a license, but most importantly each species needs specific treatment and it's own flock. I don't raise native birds even as a licensed carer, I find someone who has more if the same species.
Contrary to some misinformation in other posts, Wildlife Victoria has over 30 reps our surrounding area. Someone will respond.
Please also remember that if you are unable to wait on the phone you can use the online reporting tool https://www.wildlifevictoria.org.au/wildlife-information/report-a-wildlife-emergency
