Archaeologists studying Mongolian horse remains discovered that early nomadic cultures practiced equine dentistry as far back as 1150BCE, in the late Bronze Age. This period is closely linked with the beginning of horseback riding and the rise of mobile pastoralism.
Research also shows evidence of extracted wolf teeth by 750 BCE, which coincides with the introduction of metal bits. The use of metal bits often caused oral trauma, leading to the need for dental care.
These findings suggest that nomadic people were pioneers in veterinary care, with their innovations in equine dentistry not only enhancing communication, trade, and military power but also playing a crucial role in integrating horses into cultures and economies worldwide, ultimately reshaping human societies.

Lest We Forget ❤️
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
We Will Remember – Anzac Day
Today is a day of remembrance across Australia and New Zealand for all those who passed while serving and protecting our country. To those brave men and women, we will remember them.
To the mounted units, we will remember those riders and trusty mounts who served, supported or were lost along the way.

In this episode, Dr. Amelie McAndrews discusses equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH).
🐎 As you prepare to introduce your young horse to work this spring, ensuring their mouth comfort sets the stage for optimal performance.
🦷 Before the age of 5 years horses undergo significant dental changes including:
- the shedding of 24 deciduous (baby) teeth
- the eruption of 24 permanent molars, 12 incisors, possibly four canines and possibly wolf teeth.
This period generally coincides with the introduction the bit and ridden work.
🗓️ Regular check-ups every six months for young horses are extremely important, providing an opportunity to detect and address issues early, also paving the way to allow the horse to perform at their maximum potential.
🔍 Common dental problems in young horses include:
- sharp enamel points, which can cause subsequent ulceration to the inside of cheeks and tongue
- problematic wolf teeth
- mobile or retained deciduous teeth
- diastemata and food impaction which can lead to periodontal disease, considered the most painful condition in the horses mouth.
👍🏻 By prioritising early dental care, you’re not only ensuring your young horse’s comfort and willingness to accept the bit but also reducing the risk of dental disease in later life.

It’s heating up out there 🥵 some great tips and tricks from Off the Track WA for supporting our horses in the heat 👌🏽
If you have any extra tips please comment them below 👇🏼
OTTWA Tips & Tricks | Supporting Horses in Extreme Heat
This weekend will see parts of Western Australia reaching extreme heat levels of 43 degrees and above. Here are some important tips to ensure you and your horses are prepared for extreme weather and the increasing heat risks.
♨️ Know the signs of heat stroke in horses and monitor stock carefully. These signs include heavy sweating, increased heart rate, lack of appetite, dehydration, muscle weakness and increased body temperature.
🐴 Electrolyte supplements can replenish any essential nutrients lost through sweat.
💧 Horses cool through sweat evaporation, so ensuring they can do so effectively is key. Removing rugs can assist in allowing sweat to evaporate as high humidity and low wind decreases the efficiency of sweat evaporation in horses, whilst low humidity and high wind will assist in the cooling process.
🚫 Avoid activities such as travelling or exercising horses during peak hours of heat.
💦 Hosing horses off can provide cooling relief. Leaving horses wet without sweat scraping allows bodies to cool through evaporation effectively.
🏠 Ensure horses have plenty of fresh cool water and shelter to avoid direct rays.

How is this for an office view 🤩 Working out at Gidgegannup a few weeks ago and even managed to score a sunny day ☀️
📍NEWMAN Another fantastic trip to Newman! Jonny & Jess flew in Wednesday morning and flew out Friday afternoon and treated 46 horses in a whirlwind couple of days! A big thank you to our wonderful Pilbara clients for all of the laughs & hospitality, we love getting to catch up with you all! A particularly big thank you to Mel Johnson for her organising wizardry 😉 See you next time!! 🫶🏼
- Young horses - A horse doesn’t have it’s full permanent dentition in wear until it is 5yo. Here is a really cool case that Jonny was called out to see.. This is a 3yr old filly that had gone off her hay and feed and was showing signs of oral discomfort. Using a speculum and headlight we saw both lower 08 caps (deciduous or “baby” teeth) were buccally displaced with no periodontal attachment and significant movement. It is so important to get your young horses checked 6 monthly to monitor the development of your horses dentition so we can assist if need be! Prevention is always better than a cure 🤜🏼🤛🏼
