We are a group of animal lovers who endeavour to rehome unwanted pets from country areas such as Northam, Toodyay, Merredin and York and any surrounding shires who need us. We work tirelessly to ensure these animals find loving families and find their special place in life. We

are volunteers and this organisation is run from the homes of our volunteers so the times we are available depend on the individual volunteers, SAFE Avon Valley may be contacted any time by email and Facebook. We will usually be able to respond to you within a day or two.

Hi there I'm Fidget and I've been nominated official spokes-kitten for my little family.
We do kind of look like one black mass of kitties but we do also have unique purr-sonalities, I promise.

At only 4 months old we are just cute wee babies, keen for our lives to begin.
Like anyone, all we really want is to be loved and understood.

I, Fidget, (female) am the sweetest and purr-iest one of the bunch, at least at the moment. As soon as I feel safe with you I will start my little engine rumbling and I love smooches and gentle scratches behind the ears.
I'm shy at first and just need time and understanding while I get to know you.

Widget (male) is very similar to Gidget. He's a reserved little fellow who will thrive with a family who can take things slow and steady so he can be his very best.

😺 I will be happiest in a home with a feline friend. If you have an existing cat who can be my mentor and playmate

Squidget (female) is the smallest one in the family. It can be a very scary world when your only little and Squidget is a timid, skitty little lady.
She's best suited to an experienced cat-loving family or someone ready to learn alongside her about building confidence in a youngster.
😺 Squidget must go to a home with a more confident and friendly kitty to help her.
🐶 She can live with a cat-friendly dog.

These babies have an adoption fee of $220 each to cover the costs of desexing, vaccination and microchipping (all done before they join their new families).

Crystal 💎 LOVES kids 🥰

Crystal's story is one of remarkable resilience and survival - an even more impressive tale for one who is only 5 months old.

She is incredibly affectionate and gentle and so smoochy. Crystal LOVES being close to people and you'll soon understand why.

Her family were moving house and were unable to take Crystal with them.
(Their situation is very complex and they knew that the unfortunate reality is that Crystal would have a more safe and stable life if she could be rehomed).
They had plans to surrender her right before the move but then she disappeared the day that the truck came and collected a small storage container filled with their furniture.
For 10 days they searched for Crystal - she had never been outside before and they feared the worst for her.

Then, they were visiting the container at it's storage location to collect some items and were beyond shocked to hear a familiar tiny, desperate meow!

Yes, for over a week little Crystal was trapped in the container, sleeping in the bottom drawer of a cabinet.
There was evidence of some rodents getting in so it appears she survived by eating some mice. 🙀

Crystal had of course lost a substantial amount of weight but is otherwise physically okay.
Honestly, you wouldn't know this precious baby had faced such trauma.
She rolls around on the floor, lapping up pats and affection and love.

Crystal has grown up around kids and it's clear she adores them.
She's only had limited interaction with one other cat, who didn't want to be friends so Crystal didn't get to practice her social skills much.
But given her young age, she will likely adapt well to living with other pets if introduced appropriately.
As mentioned, before her recent experience Crystal had never been outside. She's a neat and tidy girl who is litter trained and would prefer a safe, indoors only lifestyle.

Crystal is heading off for desexing tomorrow (Tuesday) and will be ready to go to her new home from Wednesday onwards.
This sweetheart deserves to find her new family asap.
Her adoption fee is $220 and includes desexing, microchip and first vaccination.

Baby Cat 🍼❤️

Can you cuddle me and call me your wittle baby?
I'm almost 5 years old but that doesn't stop me from loving being baby-ed 🤗

I have been surrendered by my family as they have had changes in their living situation and can sadly no longer care for me.

I am such a sweet, smoochy and loving girl!
There were other cats and young children in my previous home and I definitely get along with feline friends no problem so if you have other kitties I'm sure we can become buddies.

There were dogs in my previous home, though they mostly stayed outside.
If you have a dog in your home, I'm sure we can get along with a sensible introduction!

Unfortunately due to my previous family's circumstances, I haven't been getting that much attention in recent times so it may take me just a little bit of adjusting to settle into my new home but I'll be super grateful for any cuddles and pats you have for me! (Though I'm also used to being pretty self sufficient, so if you work long hours or anything like that, I'll be just fine).

I have been indoors only so I'm clean, tidy and litter trained. I would prefer to stay indoors please!

Simba 🦁
Kelpie x Labrador? 🧐

At 12 months old this gorgeous youngster is ready for his life to truly begin.

Good with other dogs 🐕✅
Can live with cats 😺✅

He's the perfect guy?!
And at 22kgs, he's a great size too.

Simba is a friendly, playful boy.

Sadly he was yet another dog dumped at the pound, simply no longer wanted by his family 😔

He's a smart fella and although he obviously hasn't had much time or training invested into him so far, he's quickly picking up new skills in foster care.

He was placed into emergency foster care to get him out of the pound but his carers have holidays planned so he needs to find an alternative place to stay asap.

Simba has so many great qualities - he loves to play, is super gentle with even very small dogs, is scared of cats and will respect feline family members.
He's loyal and loves the company of people, he happily approaches new people, strangers are just friends he hasn't met yet after all!

Of course, since people have let him down so far there are areas ready for improvement - Simba needs to work on his recall in public places and he's nervous in the car.
He's an athletic guy so needs a secure yard with standard 6ft fencing to keep him safe.

He would be happiest in a home with another dog for company.
He loves to be around people so if you have the option to work from home or ideally don't work super long hours, he'd just love that.

And of course, he's a young boy who will do best with regular exercise so if you're looking for some company to get out and about enjoying the great outdoors more then Simba will be thrilled to accompany you.

FOSTERING is FREE!

You'll need to be able to transport Simba to one of our affiliated vet clinics for his routine care (desexing and vaccination) and also to a specialist vet for surgery to repair his cherry eye.
This looks yucky but is not causing him major issues at present.

The most gorgeous boy 🤩
Introducing Ivan!
Ivan is such a smoocher.

This very handsome lad is roughly 3 years old.
He got himself caught in a trap but he's already desexed and it's very apparent that he has been part of a family before.

He's a clean, polite, very affectionate boy who will win you over after just a few minutes with him - when he went to the vet for his vaccination this week, Ivan had vets and nurses alike going ga-ga over his good looks and spectacular personality.
Even while getting his jabs AND having blood drawn, Ivan was kneading his blankey and putting his heart out ❤️

Ivan appears to be mellow and social with other cats and he's not fussed by friendly dogs.

The person who trapped Ivan made it very clear that they do not like cats. Ivan was very lucky to emerge from his experience with his life 😟
When he first meets new people especially males, he seems initially fearful - it's likely this is because of the circumstances around his being trapped.

But as soon as he realizes you're going to be kind to him, he oozes charm and love.

Ivan can't wait to find his new home.

She is beauty, she is grace.
She just loves to smooch your face!

This gorgeous, smooch-a-holic girl is slinky and petite and just loves to be loved.

Patrice is around 12-18 months old and built like a twig but with a heart the size of all Australia.
She was found wandering the streets, skinny and alone and struggling to survive in a small regional town.

With no family coming to claim her and no local options for rescue, this gorgeous girl almost met her untimely end 😱😢 But luckily a ranger from another area stepped in and was able to collect Patrice and transport her the 3 hours to Northam into the care of SAFE.
Our huge thanks to rangers who go out of their way to help animals in need.

We don't know much about Patrice's background but she's very social with people and has obviously been a pet at some point.
She's clean and tidy and litter trained.
She loves to eat and isn't fussy.
She's confident with people even when she first meets you and loves a pat.
She seems good with young kids.
She's chatty but not so talkative it's annoying!

Patrice is a bossy little lady when it comes to other cats! She may be small but she's big on sass and is best suited to being the only cat in the home so she can be queen 👑 of her realm.
She can stand up to dogs and should be fine to live with a canine companion if introduced appropriately.

Patrice has just been desexed, microchipped and vaccinated and is ready for adoption ASAP.

Sorry if I don't seem pleased to meet you right away - this is all a bit overwhelming for me!

I'm a sweet, gentle, shy kitty looking for my second chance.

I love warm snuggles on the couch and soft pats and caresses. It's important that I have the chance to get to know you first though - seems a bit rude to just rush right in doesn't it?
Once I overcome my initial reservations, I become the most loyal and loving friend who will happily follow you around the house to make sure you're never lonely (especially on the toilet).

I was previously living in a home with my sister but she's very different to me! She's got a big, confident, outgoing personality.
She kind of bullied me and I had trouble feeling safe with her around.
Sometimes I had accidents with my wees outside the litter tray because I always felt stressed and on-edge due to her behavior.

Since being in SAFE'S care, I've been using my litter tray perfectly!
I promise I want to be clean and tidy.

I would probably be happiest living as the only cat or maybe with a more shy and calm kitty just like me.
I have lived with dogs before and usually get on fine with them.

I'm used to living with a young child but can get a bit uncertain around kids and will hide from them so I'm best suited to more mature people.

Also I've only ever been an indoor kitty so I would like to stay that way please as the outside world is a bit big and scary.

From street cat to couch cat 🥰

Just look at handsome big boy Boof!
Boof is an FIV positive boy who came in as an unsterilised Tom cat. He was scarred and scabby with a coarse dirty coat.
It's a hard life being a homeless tom.

It took many weeks in care for Boof to let down his guard.
It was evident that he had a super sweet nature hiding, but he was a battle scarred fellow who held onto his tough guy exterior for a long time, afraid of what might happen if he didn't.

As it turns out, this is what happened - he got adopted into the most amazing home where he's now living in the lap of luxury and making non-stop biscuits on this super soft blanket. ❤️❤️❤️

What a lucky boy!
A big, rough, mature Tom cat might not be everyone's idea of 'cute' but trust us, these boys are absolutely adorable.

🍚 Rice!😺❤️

A little ginger lady... a kitty always on the move.
Rice is an energiser bunny in feline form, I cannot tell you how hard it was to get even this slightly blurry photo!

Born in a drain outside an IGA, life didn't get off to an easy start for Rice and her siblings. They ate out of skip bins and were always frightened of the people in the area, who thought of these poor kittens as pests.
They didn't ask to be born there 😥

With such a tough start it's no wonder Rice is fearful of people.
Even after a number of months in care, she's still very skittish and shy.

Rice LOVES to play in fact she LIVES to play. She adores all kinds of toys, anything that moves or jingles, pipe cleaners are also very popular.

Rice thrives in the company of other cats and will be happiest with a playful friend. She's purr-fect for a family who wants to truly save a cat in need but who also has a cat looking for a friend.

Rice is not a lapcat
She's not a cuddly cat.
Honestly, she's not a big fan of interaction with people even at a distance, though her confidence is growing and sometimes her inquisitive nature wins out.

This makes her very hard to rehome.
There's no point us being unrealistic about her.

But she IS just a baby.
She's only 7 months old.
She deserves a chance.
She deserves a life.
She's happy.
She's playful.
She's entertaining.
She's pretty.
She loves other cats (and is fine with dogs).
She loves her food, isn't fussy, uses a litter tray and is clean.

Rice has had her routine vet work done and she's been waiting many months for someone willing to take her in, warts and all.

She'll do best in a multi-cat home where she's inside only or with access to a secure cat run.
Her dream family are patient and kind and understanding.
Able to understand her past and how it affects her.
Willing to share their home with a cat who might never want pats and hands-on love but who will most certainly win you over anyway.

Introducing Gryff!
We are working closely with this absolutely gorgeous 2 year old boy's family to find him the amazing home he deserves - is that you?!
Gryff moved to WA from NZ with his owner but sadly due to their own medical issues and lifestyle changes they have recognized that he will thrive in another home.
Normal adoption procedures and fees apply and SAFE Avon Valley will be assessing potential adopters.

You'll have the benefit of the opportunity to meet him in the environment he's comfortable in and can learn anything you want to know about his life this far, even being connected to a Facebook group with the families of some of his litter mates.

Gryff is a pedigree papered fox red Labrador from an amazing and reputable breeder in New Zealand. I brought him with me when I moved to Perth last year from NZ. I just am unable to keep up with his young and boisterous energy since my health has taken a turn and it’s not fair for him to not have the life I envisioned for him when I got him.

I have a background as a dog trainer so he has been well socialized with dogs of all breeds and sizes, cats, stock, people and kids. He has grown up in a household with 3 German shepherds and a cat.

His ideal home would be an active couple who can take him running or biking everyday (he loved running next to my bike when I was still able to do it).

He needs a calm and confident owner as his only downfall is he can get overstimulated when there are lots of things going on. So while he is great with kids, he will ideally live in a home with no kids or older kids and either be the only dog (with opportunities to socialize with other dogs) or live with a more mature dog who can share their chill energy.
Basically a relaxed environment where he won’t be pinging from one excitement to the next as he becomes a bull in a china shop when he gets overstimulated/overexcited.
As mentioned, he has lived with a cat and should be fine to do so again.

Fox red labs are a bit different to your standard labs. They are from working lines so are higher energy, more athletic and mature later. New owners should keep this in mind. Gryff is an active dog that will need his physical and mental needs met to continue to be a healthy and well balanced dog.
He's got all the amazing traits you would hope for in a Labrador, with a bit of an extra kick of intelligence and energy!

He has recently been castrated and is microchipped and up to date with vaccinations.

Gryff has pet insurance and his new family will need to continue this (we can arrange transfer of his policy to you).
His health is great but we all know accidents can happen, so pet insurance provides you with peace of mind now and to the future.

Gryff is a loyal, loving, great-natured dog.
He's been raised well and grown up knowing lots of love.
As well loving to run, he's a big fan of swimming.
He's toilet trained, crate trained, comes when he's called and knows basic commands.

Gryff is available to adopt for $580.

Introducing Effie!
A confident, ultra-friendly smoochaholic kitty who just cant wait to find her family.

Effie loves people and is wonderful with young children. She's extremely affectionate and loves lots of pats and human contact. At only 18 months old, Effie is also still a really playful girl.

Effie has grown up in a home where she's been kept safely indoors only; she's content staying inside, is clean and tidy with her litter tray and is definitely best suited to a home where her indoor life will continue.

She has been around dogs and is comfortable meeting new dogs. With an appropriate introduction, she can certainly live with canine pals. 🐕 🙂

Effie is best suited to being the only cat in her home - with her big and wonderful personality, she can overshadow and bully other cats and may have clashes of personality so her best fit will be in a place where she's the one and only, queen of her realm 👑

Pretty little lady Claire is a 7 month old sweetheart who will be happiest in a home with another playful and friendly cat - ideally one who can take her under their wing and help her be her best!

Claire has been in our care since way back in February (remember when it was 40 degrees and we were all melting?!)
She was caught on an isolated rural property with her large family, 11 kitties altogether of various ages.
All of her relatives have found homes now so she's the very last one remaining.

Claire is a petite and pretty kitty who prefers her beauty be appreciated and admired from afar.
Being born outside and having to fend for yourself is a scary start in life and Claire learned early that to be safe she had to steer clear of people.
After months of kindness and care with SAFE, she's aware that people aren't out to get her but she's not been able to overcome her challenging beginning.

Claire will become braver and more social over time, but she's currently very shy and skittish. She is happy in the company of other cats (we have suitable friends here she can be adopted with or you can welcome her in as a friend for an existing cat).
She's never likely to be a cuddly cat or a lap cat.
It's a very rewarding experience to gain the trust and friendship of a cat like Claire, even if it's not the traditional relationship people may have had with other cats.
We hope that someone out there will welcome her with open arms (even if she doesn't express her gratitude for a while!)

Last week, we received this email.

While I was saddened to hear of Katy's passing, my heart was full with the knowledge that she had the opportunity to live 4 years of love and comfort.
We're eternally grateful to her family for giving a home to an old girl.

I was once a lost stray little kitten living rough on the streets and struggling to survive.
It's a difficult existence and my siblings and I were incredibly lucky to be caught and placed in the care of a wonderful foster family.

I have been getting so much love and kindness and socialisation and slowly coming out of my shell.

My foster mum adores me and she knows that someone else will absolutely treasure me (and my floofy tail) too.

But he can also get crabby and turn around to give you a sharp slap or a menacing hiss.

I'm a petite and ladylike little madam who has a habit of sitting with my paws perfectly tucked in front of me while I look out over everything that's going on. I'm a very social girl who is happy to meet new people. I enjoy pats (and you'll enjoy them too, as my fur is super soft and lovely to touch!) I'm super pretty and cute too, with a little round face and expressive eyes. When you're stroking me, I love it when you get to the base of my tail so I can arch my back and really make the most of the butt scratches 🤗 I came into SAFE'S care via tha rangers and my background is unknown - I'm keeping everything I know under wraps so I'm afraid my past is a bit of a mystery ❓ although given my friendly demeanor and clean condition, my carers are sure I've been well looked after before. I'm only around 1 year old so I'm waiting for my life to begin! I'm Kitana and I am, quite simply, wonderful. (I am perhaps not very modest though 🤭) I was once a lost stray little kitten living rough on the streets and struggling to survive. It's a difficult existence and my siblings and I were incredibly lucky to be caught and placed in the care of a wonderful foster family. I have been getting so much love and kindness and socialisation and slowly coming out of my shell. My foster mum adores me and she knows that someone else will absolutely treasure me (and my floofy tail) too. Could you be the lucky one?? I love other cats to play and cuddle with. ADOPT ME Sheriff Labrador (yes, I'm a cat named after a dog 😂) One incredibly handsome ginger lad - with some seriously sweet acrobatic moves! This lovable 7 month old is a bit like the energiser bunny, he just goes and goes and goes... until it's time for a snack because the only thing he likes more than playing, is eating. The Sheriff has been in care for most of his life now, having come in as a scrawny and frightened 7 week old who was born in a shed on a goat farm - the big solid teenager you see here looks like a different creature! He loves other cats and really loves to play both with toys (as seen here!) as well as with feline friends. He's full-on and high energy so would be well matched to another cat who loves to play chasey, hide and seek, and pounce - or he could potentially be a companion for a playful but appropriate dog! Sheriff Labrador has been around a 4 year old child and as seen in the video, he very much enjoys playing with a kid who wants to engage with him, plus he's familiar with the sounds and movement of kids. That said, he's not a hugely cuddly boy and he prefers pats and smooches over being picked up and carried. Sheriff Labrador had a severe eye infection as a youngster and almost lost his eye. He's a real fighter and thankfully still has both eyes (and excellent precision vision!) but he has a chronic weep from his left eye. He looks like he's crying but don't worry, he's a very happy chap! We're happy to chat further about this with any potential adopters. Sheriff's a real cool guy. CATS IN NEED 😺❤️💔 You can help!! This month, December 2023, 100 homeless, helpless, innocent cats and kittens have come into SAFE Avon Valley's care. Yes, 100! That's 100 faces, 100 histories and - hopefully - 100 futures. Each one needs to be checked, assessed, treated for parasites, cared for, taken to the vet and then rehomed. From kittens born in our care to elderly cats, homeless in their golden years, we get them all. Cats who are abused, abandoned, or unfortunate victims of the rental crisis. So. Many. Unplanned. Kittens. 😺😺😺 Every single day is an endless slog to try and physically look after all these precious babies while also ensuring we have enough food and litter for them all, arranging and attending vet appointments, writing these Facebook profiles, responding to dozens of messages and emails, and then accommodating the new arrivals who come through the door every day. Just like the song says, we'll do anything for them! If you have big plans for the New Year, with a resolution to really make a difference, please PLEASE consider adopting an animal in need. AVAILABLE NOW Priscilla LOVES dogs! 😍 This might be a first but for Miss Priscilla, we will ONLY be considering potential new families where there is a cat-loving dog. If you have a lonely canine looking for feline love then you have most definitely landed in the right place! Priscilla is a beautiful 9 year old lady who was regretfully surrendered. Her previous owner is elderly and Priscilla is used to a quiet home without small children, however she lived with 6 other cats and a dog. Losing the only family she has ever known has been understandably traumatic for Priscilla and when she came into our care she was very shut down and depressed, not wanting to eat or interact with people at all. To my great surprise, however, she came alive when she realized there were DOGS here too! 😯 The dogs in this video are not life-long friends of Priscilla's, no she has only just met them and yet she is, in a word, obsessed. She loves them, so intensely they were a bit taken aback at first! Priscilla can be skittish and jumpy with new people but she's also incredibly affectionate and smoochy, she'll practically turn herself inside out rolling around for pats; but then something may spook her and she will suddenly rush off to hide. She's really a lovely older lady who just wants a loving happy home. She's in great health and has no special medical needs. She can live with other cats or without, but must have a doggy friend. Our Story

We are a group of animal loving VOLUNTEERS and this organisation is run from the homes of our volunteers so the times we are available depend on the individual volunteers. SAFE Avon Valley may be contacted any time by email or through Facebook and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

SAFE Avon Valley endeavours to rehome impounded dogs and cats or pets whose owners have no other option other than to surrender; this may be due to death or permanent residency in a nursing home. We rescue animals from country areas such as Northam, Toodyay, and York and other local shires where animals are in need.

We work tirelessly to ensure these animals have loving families who can care for them and give them their special place in life.
