This is our patient Alby - He recently had BOAS surgery 🐶

This is a recent surgery we performed on Alby’s nose surgery called Ala-vestibulolasty. This newer technique helps open the nostrils.

Alby also had a tonsillectomy and H-pharyngoplasty to change the shape and function of the soft palate around the area called the pharynx.

This surgery will help Alby tremendously!

BOAS Explained 👇

BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) refers to dogs that have skull bones that are shortened in length. This affects the anatomy of the soft tissue structures of their airways. Common breeds affected by BOAS include the English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug, Pekingese, and the Boston Terrier.

These dogs with BOAS have upper airway structural abnormalities that cause an increase in airway resistance, making it difficult to inhale.

Signs of BOAS:
• Noisy breathing
• Snorting and snoring
• Tire quickly with exercise
• Coughing, gagging, retching
• Vomiting

MEET DR SAM - Our Rehabilitation Guru!

So, Rehab WHAT IS IT?

Rehabilitation and physical therapy have long been used in the human medical fields to promote musculoskeletal health and injury recovery. We are now recognising that exercise programs and other manual treatments can also be beneficial for our pets. Rehabilitation is also an important part of maintaining general health in our pets from young pups through to golden oldies.
It includes interventions that are designed to optimise recovery in pets from surgeries, injuries, chronic conditions and improve overall health.

Dr Sam Singleton at North Nowra Veterinary Hospital provides her expertise in rehabilitation programs that assist dogs and cats during the recovery process.

Some conditions treated through rehabilitation include:

• Arthritis
• Cruciate surgeries
• Patellar luxation
• Meniscal injuries
• Spinal surgeries
• Elbow and hip dysplasia
• Shoulder instability
• Acute and chronic injuries

If you would like to discuss more about rehabilitation and how it could benefit the well-being of your pet please reach out to our team who will be happy to assist you further.

🩵 Pebbles 🩵
Big bow - big ears - bigger personality!
This is little Pebbles who was recently in at Jervis Bay to be desexed. She is just a tiny 2kg! Everything went well and Pebbles is recovering nicely at home, keeping quiet and enjoying extra TLC with her very loving owner.

Desexing your pet has many benefits, inculding lowering the risk of certain types of cancer, helping with behavioural issues and preventing unwanted litters. It is also a good opportunity to complete pre-anaesthetic wellness blood testing, which can help your veterinarian obtain a bigger picture of your pet's overall internal health and identify markers which may indicate underlying disease.
If you have questions about getting your pet desexed, give us a call to chat with our knowledgeable & compassionate nurses.

We look forward to seeing Pebbles again at her post-operative check up! 🩵

HEATSTROKE 🔥

With summer approaching, it is a good time to understand the risks of heatstroke!

Unlike people, most animals can’t sweat and have to lose excess heat through evaporation by panting.

This makes it difficult for them to cool down and puts them at greater risk of heat stress on hot days and when doing strenuous exercise.

Heatstroke can be fatal - so please take it easy on hot days!

🌸 SPRING ALLERGIES 🌸

It's that time again when our pets may begin to become more reactive to Springs new pollens, flowers, grass, plants and dust.

SYMPTOMS YOU MAY NOTICE:

• Skin becomes dry, scaly, smelly and thickened
• Bumps on skin
• Red and inflamed skin (particularly under the ‘armpits’ or ‘belly’)
• Pets are seen scratching, biting, licking or rubbing up against things
• Skin is painful to touch
• Hair loss

WHAT TO DO IF MY PET STARTS SHOWING SYMPTOMS?

You need to take your pet to see a veterinarian.
They will perform a full body examination, possibly perform skin tests to establish what is causing the allergy and arrange a suitable management plan to prevent the condition recurring.

In some cases skin allergies can be related to other medical conditions, therefore it is important to rule this out first.

The longer a skin problem dismissed the more difficult it can be to treat and often this prolongs the healing process.
