Gold Coast Guinea Pig Rescue Inc Gold Coast Guinea Pig Rescue takes in sick, abandoned and surrendered guinea pigs and cares for them until new homes can be found.

Gold Coast Guinea Pig Rescue began as a small shelter in the back garden of a suburban block of flats in Southport in December 2005. The shelter was started in response to the large number of guinea pigs being surrendered to the Animal Welfare League. I was a volunteer at AWL at the time, helping with the cats, and when I realised the enormity of the problem in regard to guinea pigs I felt I had t

o do something about it. I'd never had guinea pigs as pets but as an allround animal lover I couldn't bear to see these little creatures just abandoned. The shelter relocated to larger premises in Pimpama in January 2015 where we have continued our work and at times have been home to up to 250 guinea pigs. Ms Alex Winterford

PIGGY HEROES!!!

We have a very happy guinea pig owner tonight as, after being errant for two weeks their piggy was finally caught this afternoon and is now safe and secure in his enclosure 😍

Panorama is a very much loved guinea pig and his elderly owners are so relieved that he's home again 🩷

Thankyou so much to all who offered to help catch him πŸ™ He was very good at evading capture but not good enough for Trey and Bianca who risked life and limb (well, snakes and scratches from the prickly hedge 😁) and charged into that hedge determined not to let it beat them!! Thanks guys, you are true piggy heroes 😍πŸ’ͺπŸ†

The piggy has just been captured!!! Pics coming!! 😊

I've been contacted by a lady who's guinea pig escaped a few days ago. He's living in her hedge and all attempts to catch him have failed. The lady is in a wheelchair, and she and her husband are elderly, as are their neighbours who have also tried to catch him.

Is there anyone in the Mudgeeraba/Robina area who could help? He may not survive much longer if there are cats, dogs or snakes about!!

Please pm this page or text Alex on 0408263455 if you can help and I'll put you in touch with the owner πŸ™

I previously advertised that the shelter would be open this weekend but due to unexpected events we now won't be opening until Sunday 23rd Feb when we'll be holding a MONSTER GARAGE SALE!!

It's been three months since our last Garage Sale and our bank account is looking a little sad so we're hoping for a good turnout!

We remain available for contactless pickup for hay, shelter mix, pellets and other products.

Biscuit is very proud of these poops and wanted to share them with you 😊❀️ This dear little guy was surrendered on Wednesday. He requires regular syringe feeding as he stopped eating a few days ago after undergoing a surgical procedure. He's the sweetest little guy and has become house piggy #4 along with Gretchen, Pom Pom and Buttons. Of course he had to have a friend so Bunny, another recently surrendered male, has become house piggy #5 πŸ˜„

At this rate I'm going to need a bigger house πŸ˜…

Whilst the shed has power during today's blackout, it doesn't extend to my house so I've given house piggies Pom Pom, Gretchen and Buttons a day on the grass 😊

Des*xed male Buttons (tri-colour abby) is almost eight and a half and a bit arthritic, in case anyone's wondering why he's hopping πŸ˜ƒ

I've put their tunnels back down and they're happy again πŸ˜…

Thank goodness Celeste and Mark gave us this generator when we had that four day power outage over Christmas 2023! That was an unexpected blackout whereas I had advance warning about today's which started at 8.30am and is estimated to go until 3pm.

In preparation my landlord contacted Josh, the electrician who helped us last time. He came on Tuesday and put a switch on the generator which means the shed will have full power during any blackouts. As an added bonus I can run an extension cord from the shed to the water pump so we won't be without water all day. I'm only on tank water so normally no power means no water.

Thankyou Josh, my landlord Craig, generous piggy people Celeste and Mark, and our other Mark (vollie) who came on Tuesday night and put oil and fuel in the tanks so the generator was ready to roll πŸ™

Also many thanks to the energex worker who helped me get the generator started as I couldn't pull the cord hard enough to get it going πŸ₯΄

Running a rescue is mentally and emotionally exhausting at times and the last few days have been particularly hard, not in regards to any of our shelter piggies but for three little darlings, two of whom I only knew for a few days and one who I had been boarding once or twice a year for the past six years.

LEMON & BISCUIT πŸ’–

Lemon and Biscuit's owner was rushed to hospital early on Friday morning. We'd been communicating on and off for a few years and I was aware Lemon had recently seen a vet due to dental issues. He'd lost a lot of weight and at four years of age his owner was seeking advice as to whether or not to book him in for a dental. Before any further action could be taken she was admitted to hospital and was needing someone to pick the piggies up from her home and arrange boarding for them. One of my vollies kindly agreed to pick them up on her way home from work, and after calling in at the shelter so I could meet them, she took them home overnight and administered regular syringe feeds as Lemon couldn't eat on his own, and Biscuit only had limited chewing ability. Next day she took them to Coomera Springs Vet where both piggies were examined and found to have severe dental disease. Lemon's molars had grown over his tongue, making it impossible for him to eat, and Biscuit's weren't much better. I'd already arranged for them to go to Noah's Ark Pet Resort where I knew they'd receive the care needed whilst their owner recovered from emergency surgery and was able to make a decision about her beloved piggie's future.

This morning I took Lemon and Biscuit back to the vet where they made their way together over the rainbow bridge to piggy heaven πŸŒˆπŸ˜’πŸ’”

LIN πŸ’–

I began boarding Lin and her brother Lui just over six years ago. They had been purchased as same s*x piggies and when it was discovered this wasn't the case, rather than have either of them des*xed their family chose to house them separately. Once or twice a year they would arrive in their separate carriers and I would put them alongside each other for the duration of their stay. They were almost identical - tan with a short coat. Lui was the more outgoing of the two and both were a joy to look after ❀️

It was when Lin was booked in for boarding a few weeks ago that I found out Lui had passed away 😒 After going home Lin's health deteriorated and two days ago her family informed me Lin had also crossed the rainbow bridge πŸŒˆπŸ’”

I'm going to miss these little guys πŸ˜’πŸ’”

A big shout out to longterm shelter supporter Daniel Cunnington who volunteered to mow our grass in Southport back in October 2012 and today repeated the exercise at our Pimpama shelter πŸ’ͺ😊

I've known Daniel since 2011 when he and his children started attending our events with their guinea pigs. Since then he's adopted many guinea pigs from us, and volunteered at most of our events. You may have met him at one of the Pig Day Out events where he usually mans the entry gate 😊

UPDATE: We have someone coming today!! Thanks Daniel 😍

HELP!!! Our grass is growing faster than the guinea pigs can eat it so we're reaching out in the hope of finding someone willing to volunteer their time to mow it! Our vollie Mark usually does it but he helps us with so many things in what little time he has to spare so I'm putting the feelers out to see if someone else would like the honour 😁

It's a 900 square block so quite a large area. We can provide a lawn mower but we don't have a whipper snipper. If you're keen please pm Alex on this page 🐹
