🐾 Fleas, Ticks, and Grass Seeds – Oh My! 🐾
With the high humidity this summer, we’re seeing an increase in flea and grass seed sightings—something that’s typically rare around this area. We've even had a tick case! 😲
Why it's a concern:
Grass seeds can burrow into your dog's skin, travel through tissues, and even reach vital organs, causing infections. Fleas and ticks can also lead to discomfort and health issues such as anaemia in prolonged infeststions.
Here are a few tips to help prevent problems:
🕵️♂️ Daily Check: Spend 5 minutes each afternoon combing through your dog's coat from head to toe. Focus on areas like the toes, armpits, joints, base of the tail, spine, and ears—where fleas, ticks, and grass seeds are most likely to hide.
🧴 Topical Flea Treatments: Apply flea treatments 3 days before or after a bath. These treatments spread through the coat with your dog's natural oils, which can be washed away by a bath.
🛁 Flea Shampoo: Flea shampoo needs to be used regularly to be effective. It only works for about 3 days and doesn’t kill eggs. Most flea eggs are found in your dog's environment, so frequent baths (every 3 days) are necessary for the flea life cycle (2 weeks to 8 months).
💇♀️ Regular Grooming: Line brushing your dog daily helps you spot any seeds or issues early. If your dog has a thick coat, professional grooming every 2-4 weeks can help keep things under control before they become a problem.
Stay vigilant and keep your furry friend safe this summer! 🐕
