Our little friends, the Terriers and Dachshunds, love being part of the Earthdog activities. Originally bred to hunt, today the sport of Earthdog allows these dogs to use their natural instincts in a safe, simulated hunting environment. And boy do they have have lots of fun doing it.

Earthdogs are tested on their ability to enter the den, find their way to the 'quarry' through a series of turns and tunnels, and work the quarry. These challenges become increasingly difficult at each stage.

Dogs six months of age or older and registered with the Dogs Australia are eligible to participate in Earthdog tests, as are spayed and neutered dogs with Limited Registration provided they are classified as eligible breeds.

You guessed it - this is the Cane Corso. This beautiful dog has origins from Rome and is a true famly dog. With Mastiff origins, this dog serves its family, home and other animals well. They are a relatively new breed, formally being recognised by Dogs Australia in 2003.

Different to the Mastiff, the Corso does not have loose skin. They are large, lean and athletic dogs. The Cane Corso comes in a wide range of colours, from black, tan with a black mask, blue/grey and brindle

As a guardian, the Cane Corso is wary of strangers. The breed is dominant and has an intimidating appearance and stature. Early social outings with humans and other dogs is essential for a happy family life, and the breed can be controlled with a firm hand and a strong influence.

What a lovely dog.

We love the Whippet - They are versatile, athletic, muscular, robust, playful, confident and responsive. Some may think they are fragile and nervous but that couldn't be less true!

Whippets come in all colours, either solid (black, white, blue, red, fawn) all shades of brindle, with or without white trim, and parti-coloured (and solid or brindle, broken with white)

Whippets love life, whether chasing a leaf that’s fallen from a tree or curling up in your lap while you watch TV. They are funny, loving with a definite sense of humour, usually at their human’s expense.

They are not aggressive to other dogs or people and happily co-exist with other breeds. They will bark and alert at visitors, but more from excitement than hostility.

We love these funny furry friends.

The English Toy Terrier can be traced back through the centuries, having been bred from the Manchester Terrier, which was previously known as the English Black and Tan Terrier.

In Australia the breed was quite popular around the 1960s, though it faded in popularity over time until the 1990s when there were only two breeding pairs left in the country. Since then a concerted effort has been made to boost the gene pool. Several key sires with links to Australia’s standard have been imported, which has vastly improved temperament, conformation and acceptance of the breed. Care has been taken to adhere to the correct English Breed Standard, while avoiding extremes in the breed and fashion fads.

They are a very active dog that has a great zest for life. It is an alert, faithful and intelligent companion that is fast-maturing, mentally and physically.

Find out more about this breed at their breed stand at Dogs on Show this Saturday! Or read more about them here: https://www.dogsnsw.org.au/Breeds/browse-all-breeds/48/English-Toy-Terrier-(Black-&-Tan)/

Trick Dog Competition is a new Dogs Australia discipline which became an official event in January 2020. Developed by members of Dances With Dogs discipline, the intention of Trick Dogs is to encourage handlers to teach their dogs skills and to display behaviours in a positive environment.

The best way to start is to join in a workshop, which is conducted to give instruction and feedback. Workshops are an excellent introduction because they teach every handler there that no matter what your level of expertise and regardless of the stage of your dog, these tricks can be taught in a simple and easy manner. At the end of each workshop handlers were leaving with a range of new skills after an incredibly relaxed time with their dogs, supported by an encouraging group of skilled instructors.

Did you guess it correctly? It was the Basset Hound!

The Basset Hound has been thought to have come from the Bloodhound, bred by the Benedictine Monks of the St Hubert Monastery in Belgium. And is that it a surprise that they are second only to Bloodhounds in their scent abilities?

So what does a Basset Hound look like?
1) They have a domed head with prominent occiput, lozenge shaped eyes, nose tapered but not snipy or pointed.
2) Acceptable colours: tri-colour, red and white, tan and white, lemon and white – and any recognised hound colour.
3) Height: 33-38 cm at withers.

And what about their personalities?
They are laid back, a little bit stubborn with a strong personality. The Basset is a loyal family member who will walk all day, but is just as happy staying home. Not a dog that suits being an ‘only child,’ as he may howl if left alone all day. Always the comedian, can tell a story with the raising of one eyebrow! Great with children and other dogs.

It's that time again - can you guess who this dog is?

Also known as 'The King of Terriers', the Airedale Terrier is a relatively young breed in comparison to many other breeds of dogs, with its origins being traced back to a little over 150 years ago.

Some facts about the Airedale Terrier:
1) they weigh between 20-30Kgs
2) their height at the withers is 58–61 centimeters for males, with females slightly smaller
3) These are hypoallergenic dogs and has a non shedding coat

Airedale Terriers are hard-working, hard-playing dogs with boundless energy. They are vigilant and protective, making them excellent watchdogs, though they are friendly to family and friends. We love these lovely animals!!

Companion Animals Amendment (Puppy Farms) Bill 2024
20 Major Points of Concern for DOGS NSW Members

The DOGS NSW Media & Government Legislation Committee has drafted 2 documents as follows:-

2. Document 2 identifies the 20 major points in simple dot point form for easy referral. This document should be read in conjunction with the Document 1, above.

The Canadian Eskimo Dog is called ‘Qimmiq’ by the Inuit. The breed proved popular with Arctic explorers and earned a reputation as a sled dog that could pull the heaviest loads over the greatest distances on the least amount of food.

It has a long association with humans and is a gentle and affectionate companion. The breed can be overly responsive to any stimuli and are best suited to an adult household. It is important to note that the breed does not adapt well to temperate climates.

LEARN, GROW, INFLUENCE AT PPGA’S BIENNIAL CONFERENCE 2024

This 3-day event guarantees high-level education, workshops and networking opportunities for pet training and behaviour professionals PLUS pet owners welcome! Australia’s leading dog training organisation Pet Professional Guild Australia (PPGA) has opened registrations for its biennial conference themed Learn, Grow, Influence in Sydney from 14 to 16 June 2024.
PPGA represents pet industry professionals who are committed to results and science-based, force-free training and pet care, and offer educational resources for pet lovers.“ The pet training industry continues to be unregulated and PPGA is one of the very few organisations in Australia that requires their professional members to do ongoing further education to keep up with best practices and scientific research to maintain their membership,” says PPGA Vice President Barbara Hodel.

The conference offers a unique learning experience for pet professionals and pet owners alike through lectures and practical workshops by globally renowned pet training and behaviour experts.

“Attendees will be spoilt for choice with an assortment of workshops designed to provide a 'taster' of new and innovative ideas for trainers, their animals and their clients,” says Hodel. DOGS NSW members may be interested in the Nose Work and Trick workshop, or the Urban Herding Workshop for the people with working dogs who do not have access to sheep.

The practical workshops will run on June 14 at St Ives Showground (transport from the city is organised) and the lectures are scheduled for June 15 and 16 at the Rydges World Square in the CBD.

You guessed it - the wonderfully majestic Weimaraner.

The Weimaraner is a relatively young breed of hunting dog and dates back to the early 19th century. It is a passionate dog, whose temperament is friendly, fearless, and obedient yet protective, but not aggressive, and has a close relationship with his owner and family.

This makes the Weimaraner an ideal family dog, devoted especially to children, but needs to be taught the house rules and understand that he is not the boss of the household! Being a gundog, bred to be the hunter’s companion as well as his working dog, the Weimaraner loves to be close to his owner, so enjoys nothing more than exercising with them, sharing the luxury of being inside the home and being included in the family activities.

What a beauty!
