Bringing Home a New Puppy – What to Do First

The first few weeks with your puppy shape how they feel about the world, their home, and the people around them. This time is all about setting clear, kind foundations for lifelong confidence and calm behaviour.

Start by setting up your home for success. Remove anything tempting like shoes and cords, and provide a mix of soft, hard, and interactive toys. Reward calm moments such as lying down or chewing on appropriate items. Puppies repeat what works, so catch and reward good behaviour early.

Biting and mouthing are normal parts of development. Always have a toy ready for play so your puppy learns what’s appropriate to chew. Use longer toys to protect your hands and keep sessions short to avoid overstimulation. Follow playtime with a licki mat or chew to help them settle and rest.

Alone time practice should begin early, even if it’s just for a minute. Leave your puppy with a safe chew or Kong and return before they begin to worry. Over time, build up the duration so your puppy learns that being alone is safe and predictable.

Socialisation is a critical window between 3–16 weeks. This is when your puppy learns what’s normal in the world. Even before full vaccinations, you can socialise safely by carrying your puppy or letting them watch the world from your lap or pram. Pair new sights and sounds with treats and calm praise. Keep experiences short, positive, and never forced.

Helping your puppy feel safe, calm, and understood now will lead to a confident, well-adjusted adult dog.

If your teenage dog has suddenly started barking at people, stopping on walks or reacting to things they used to ignore, you’re not doing anything wrong. Many dogs go through a second fear stage between roughly 6–14 months where their emotions react faster than their thinking brain. Normal things can suddenly feel big and scary again.

This isn’t bad behaviour and it doesn’t mean you’ve gone backwards. They need space, safety and support while their brain goes through this stage.

This is something I help owners with all the time in private training. We look at what your dog is reacting to, I show you what to do in those real life moments and we build confidence without force or punishment.
