Raising a puppy is easier when you have the right tools on hand. These are the items I recommend to clients to help their puppies settle, stay calm, and learn good habits from the start.

A snuffle mat is perfect for encouraging sniffing and problem solving, which helps a puppy relax.
A heartbeat teddy can make the first nights away from mum and littermates much less stressful.
Long toys are a simple way to make play safer and stop puppies mouthing hands.
Hard chews give them a safe outlet for teething and self soothing.
A playpen creates a secure area when you can’t supervise, and should always include something to keep your puppy busy.
A lickimat is an easy way to help your puppy wind down after play or training.
A crate gives your puppy a safe, predictable place for night sleep and daytime naps.

🐾 Separation Anxiety 🐾

❌ Myth: Dog sleeping in the owner’s bed causes separation anxiety

Many people believe letting a dog share your bed makes them “clingy” or anxious when left alone. In reality, where your dog sleeps has no link to separation anxiety. A dog can happily sleep in your bed and still be totally fine when left home alone.

❌ Myth: Being too affectionate makes dogs dependent

Cuddles, pats, and love do not cause anxiety. Separation anxiety is a panic disorder, not a result of being “spoiled.” In fact, a secure bond often makes dogs feel safer when alone, not more anxious.

❌ Myth: Dogs with separation anxiety are being naughty

Chewing, barking, or toileting when left isn’t misbehaviour or spite — it’s a sign of distress. Your dog isn’t punishing you for leaving; they’re panicking. Punishing these behaviours only increases fear and stress.

✅ Truth: Genetics can play a role

Some breeds or individual dogs are naturally more prone to anxiety. Just like people, personality and inherited traits can make some dogs more sensitive to being left alone.

✅ Truth: Life changes are a big factor

Moving house, changes in routine (like owners going back to work), divorce, a new baby, or losing a family member can trigger separation anxiety. Dogs thrive on routine, so sudden changes can feel overwhelming.

✅ Truth: Early experiences matter

Puppies that don’t learn independence (for example, never being left alone in small doses) may struggle later in life. Similarly, dogs who experience trauma when left (storms, accidents, fireworks) can develop separation anxiety.

Why I’m such a big advocate for crate training 🐾

Crate training isn’t about locking your puppy away—it’s about giving them a safe, calm space to rest, especially in busy households or for puppies who struggle to switch off.

It also sets them up for real-life situations like:
• Staying overnight at the vet after desexing or surgery
• Recovery time in a quiet, contained space
• And even future travel—Virgin Airlines is in the process of allowing small pets in-cabin! ✈️

Teaching your puppy to feel relaxed in a crate now can make their future so much easier!

For years, dog owners have been told they need to “be the boss” or “show their dog who’s in charge.” But these outdated methods often create stress, fear, and even aggression.

Dogs don’t need an “alpha” – they need clear communication, trust, and rewards for good behaviour.

Using fear-based training can:
• Increase your dog’s anxiety
• Make learning harder
• Damage the bond you share

Instead, positive reinforcement builds the behaviour you want by rewarding your dog when they get it right. It’s simple, effective, and backed by science.
