This took me a while to be able to post.
This week we lost the original driving force of mountain biking and womenâs mountain biking in Brisbane, Gillian Duncan passed this week.
Without her I canât imagine mountain biking in Brisbane and also my own businesses would be anywhere near where they are today.
She approached me in the early 2000âs to tell me that mountain biking was going to be part of the Real Adventure Womenâs program and asked if I would I run it.
I was more than happy to be involved and thatâs when our relationship really kicked off, and my connect with Brisbane City Council.
Back then there was only a handful of girls mountain biking at Gap Creek, through this program that very quickly grew to packed out sessions every month.
She was always pushing for new mountain bike trails, and boy did she have to fight hard for that, I got to say a lot of people disliked her and she copped heaps of flack, but she absolutely never backed off. Between Gillian and Chris (Oppy ) the first legal major MTB realignment happened
It was approved to realign the 350m steps trail to create 1200m Bandicoot trail, thatâs when Australian Bush Trails, my trail building business started, again I strongly believe this wouldnât have happened without Gillian and Oppy.
Over the years I was lucky enough to carry out many projects that she fought for.
She fought for regular monthly trail care and started the Gap Creek Trail Alliance, I canât imagine the hours that she put into trail care, all just for the love of mountain biking and getting others out enjoying the bush.
She also helped so many other areas to set up their own trail care groups and gave her time to train them.
Then came the trail books, with Where to ride in South East Queensland that she worked on with Mark Roberts. Every new addition sheâd give me a call and ask for my logos to advertise in these books, my brains getting older now but Iâm pretty sure I rarely paid for adds she just wanted Roadie Rob's Bicycle School in there, especially on the pages that had the trails that Iâd worked on.
She was one of the strongest and stubborn people I knew, not everyone agreed with her but thatâs because she has true passion for the cause.
Mountain biking has lost one of their great leaders this week but she will always be remembered.
Please when youâre riding your favourite trail remember Gillian because there is a good chance she had a big part in the reason why itâs there.
I miss you Gillian Duncan, Ride in Peace â¤ď¸
