I could not support this more! 🙌❤️

Rehab: it conjures up thoughts of bodywork, supplements, red light, magnetic blankets, all the fixings.
It’s fun to get into the toys, and most of us go overboard on the little details.

Those things can be extremely helpful. There is an enormous amount of benefit in supportive treatments, nutrition and other details for helping the horse be healthy

But the horse cannot make true, lasting changes until the human commits to learning to handle and ride to STRAIGHTNESS.

All the therapies in the world won’t fix the problem if the horse is perpetually handled and ridden crooked, without engagement, and in the wrong movement patterns.

Rehab, to be successful, HAS to involve the human taking strides to be straighter, more aware, more fluid and knowing how to guide a horse well.

Don’t let yourself just get caught in the feel good trappings: it’s fun to watch bodywork make the horse feel nice. It’s fun to buy supplements. It’s fun to consult animal communicators and healers and it’s important to keep a broad perspective, BUT

Don’t forget horses body has to learn to have the postural tone to change the problem at the source. All the bodywork and supplements in the world won’t change a bad movement pattern if you keep riding the horse crooked - the only one who can fix that is you-

Want to understand me and my business a bit better?

1️⃣. I have owned, ridden and competed horses since I was a teenager. A lot of what I know has been through trial and error with my own horses. I have been lucky enough to compete overseas on multiple occasions, and been inspired by so many people who may not even know it.

2️⃣. I suffer with chronic pain and have been overlooked by many doctors until recently. This helps me empathise with the horses and try to advocate where I can. This is also why I feel so strongly towards movement as treatment.

3️⃣. I struggle a lot with the competitive and negative nature of the profession – owners and professionals often compete with each other and like to compare and criticise. I am sensitive to this and as such often struggle with the profession.

4️⃣. I want to keep doing this job for a long time. My business often pivots in ways that allow me to do this – the decisions I make are aimed at keeping me present and motivated, whilst doing the best I can by the horses.

5️⃣. I LOVE riding. Not just a little, a LOT. It brings a huge sense of freedom and mindfulness to myself. I am continually wanting to improve my skills and horsemanship, and strive to find “that balance” between advocacy and competition.

6️⃣. I have a very low tolerance for negativity. I distance myself from clients who bring this to my practice. I am not afraid to sever a relationship I feel doesn’t align. I have seen too many people leave this job because of this.

7️⃣. I love being challenged. I love the difficult cases as long as I feel part of a team between the client and myself. I love to challenge the boundaries of conventional treatments and theories and am always happy to think “outside of the box”.

8️⃣. I don’t believe one discipline or training modality is “better” than the others. The success of a training theory is dependent more on the person than the ideals of the theory. Much like the saying “it’s not the tools that do the damage, it’s the user of the tools”.

9️⃣. I do believe how you ride and train will have the most benefit or the most detriment to your horse. More than any bodywork or supplement. There is very often no quick fix.

🔟. I LOVE working for myself. I graduated wanting to work in a hospital and be the BEST. I no longer want to. I want to be able to help and support how I feel is best, not how the profession necessarily expects me to.

Remember to ride the horse that’s under you 🐴

❓Did you know recent studies in human physiotherapy have shown that there is in fact no such thing as perfect posture?
It varies from individual to individual, and varies according to a persons exercise and movement.

How does this relate to horses? 🐴

Maybe picking our horses apart at the stand still, and chasing a perfection that doesn’t exist is limiting us and them.

Just like we say to judge the horse not the x-rays. Maybe we should judge their behaviour and movement, not just their posture alone. You need movement to improve posture. So we can’t be scared to allow them to move because their posture isn’t perfect.

Want to learn some techniques to help prevent neck and back pain?

These lessons are aimed at horses who struggle with their body, or for riders wanting to know how to strengthen their horses body.
Lessons can be in hand or ridden, depending on the horses ability, diagnosis and rider confidence.

The lessons are given with a physical therapy approach in mind, with conscious effort made towards assessing for pain or genuine dysfunction. They are best suited to a partnership wanting consistent mentorship and lessons, rather than a one-off lesson approach.

Lessons are generally held on site in Seymour.
If you would like more information please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Don’t let fear ruin it.

I have been loving the responses to my previous post about “why do we think horses have more problems these days?” (as well as the messages of camaraderie and support).

🩷 A client told me this week I need to be true to myself, my clients and my mission.

I have many ideas and theories and observations, but this is most likely my biggest one.

FEAR

❌ We’re told to fear the grass and open paddocks
❗️ We’re told to fear the shoes
❌ We’re told to fear the horse without hay 24/7
❗️ We’re told to fear the professionals we choose to work on our horses
❌ We’re told to fear the bit and our hands
❗️ We’re told to fear the imperfect saddle and saddle fit
❌ We’re told to fear the imperfect surface and imperfect footing
❗️ We’re told to fear the changes in behaviour or imperfect footfalls
❌ We’re told to fear pain relief and conventional medications
❗️ We’re told to fear wet saddle blankets and traditional training
❌ We’re told to fear the speed or the imperfect head carriage

You get my drift?
But who's to say who's right and who's wrong?
Or maybe it's all dependent on YOU and YOUR situation.

Many businesses and professionals use fear tactics to educate, as they (and we) feel like sometimes that is the only way the message will get across.
But we’re not seeing the damaging effect it’s having.

You can’t win.
Obesity is killing our horses. But they shouldn’t be without food.
Owners are spending more money on body work and promising supplements than their riding or lessons. Because we’re always scared our horses are suffering.
Horses are in constant rehab. Or should it just be conditioning?

So here is my new question…❓

Are there really that many problems, or are we making it harder than it needs to be?
Do we need more fear tactics and things to “watch out for” or should we be supporting each other more in our pursuits and pivoting our expectations….

I want you to be a brave horse owner.
Not a fearful one.

Somethings gotta give 🫣
Tell me why?

I could work 24/7
Like actually.
Between seeing horses, fielding enquiries, responding to patient updates, writing notes and billing - this could fill my all day every day.
The job never ends.
(I’m not ignoring you, I’m getting there! 😅)

But you know what this also means?
There are that many sore horses.
There are that many horses in “rehab”.
There are that many problems.

It’s been hurting my heart. 💔 (actually!)
Day in and out my job is to find and treat pain.
I can go weeks where I don’t get a “win”, where case after case seems more complicated than the next.
It seems the more I learn, the harder it becomes to piece everything together.

I love seeing the horses and riders we’ve helped. But for everyone one we help, there are four more coming in behind them struggling.

It’s got me thinking and inspiring.
I’ve been on such a growth journey with horses over the last year, and i’ve learnt so much.

I’m going to try step up my game and try to tackle this problem.
Our horses can’t live their lives in rehab.

But I want to know…..
Why do you think we’re having so many problems?

Event 1 done ✅
And whilst the rider made a crucial error 🫣 there is still so much to be so happy about.
I am beyond thrilled with how we ran in the reining today 💕 Whilst our chance of a place is likely gone, I am just so incredibly overjoyed with how this little red-head ran today.

To think where we started 6 months ago - I can’t believe he went like he went today 🥰🥰
I am so lucky to be a part of this event The Australian Cowgirl Co. and journey 💕

I almost cried (again) when I got these photos today 🥰🐴🦄

🙌 Back on the 22nd 🙌

I won’t be working next week as I head to The Australian Cowgirl Co. - Australia’s Greatest Horsewoman.

All messages will be answered when I return to work on the 22nd. 📱 💻

Myself and my horse Sq**rt will be competing across multiple days and multiple events alongside some of the most determined female riders in the country. 💪

To be able to enter and ride on a horse I trained, post joint replacement is a goal I have always aimed for. 🥳

As always a massive shout out to my team of epic helpers and supporters at home 🥰💕

Sq**rt has been holding up so well leading into this all thanks to MultiCube Stockfeeds and Inside Out Equine Health 🦄

There’s been so many things happening the last few weeks - I’m not going to lie, I’m exhausted, but I also want to share some of the great work we’ve been involved in.

With more and more rehab cases rolling in, we’ve been utilising all the tools and exercises to try and get these horses back out there.

I’ve had multiple horses stay with us for varying periods to allow us to use our Laser, Shockwave, PRP and other rehabilitation methods.

The last few weeks have been filled with full consult days, lunging horses, lessons, Equilates, bandage changes, laser sessions, shockwave sessions, tooth removals and so much more!

Not to mention the news that I’ll be presenting at Equitana 2024 💪🥳 - more on that to come!

Add to that training like a mad-woman to get myself and my horse ready for Australia’s Greatest Horsewoman 🫣🦄

The Easter Break needs to be just a bit longer…. 😴😴

Another huge day at Bundalong done today with this crew ✅🥳 sporting our new Equine HSD shirts 💕

We do a run to Bundalong once a month where this team works like the champions they are 🙏💪

L -> R -> Dr. Melissa Ball, Dr. Sabine Ware, Sharni and Caeli.
This is the only run with the four of us together, as this run every month is always booked out. But you will intermittently see everyone’s faces at different times.

Always a big thanks to Sue @ Granite Farm for hosting.

Likely you’ve heard of Hay Cubes and MultiCube Stockfeeds. And I know many of you have questions!

I was delighted to have them join me at my place a few weeks ago to run through some commonly asked questions about their products, and the most common ways they can benefit your horse.
Including the best way to introduce this product to your horse 🐴 for the first time.
I’ve been using and supporting MultiCube Stockfeeds for several years now.
You will always hear me advocating for forage, forage and more forage in your horses diet - and there’s no more versatile way 🌱 🌱

What is the biggest determinant of your horses success, especially after injury?

🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🖤

That’s right, H-E-A-R-T 💕

Stay with me.
A horse has to LOVE it’s job to want to keep doing it.
If your horse doesn’t love its job, your treatments won’t work like they’re meant to.

I’ve ridden horses with neck malformations, blindness, chronic pain, all kinds of things. Yes their management helps them - but their heart drives them.

A horse that is resentful towards its work or ridden career is very hard to succeed with. They become resentful because the pain is too much, it’s been going on to long, or they’re being made to do something they honestly don’t want to do.

A horse can be in pain and still love its job.
Those horses are the most rewarding to treat.
Our management helps them, but their heart drives them.
This doesn’t mean their treatments are linear and easy, and their training isn’t filled with challenges. It just means you can FEEL when you have a partner, and when you don’t.

I look at this when I get a horse for a consult.
The more heart your horse has, the better chance we have. Not because they’re pain is any less or any less complex, but because I do believe they WANT to be your partner.

07/03/2024

The 10% can't trump the 90%

I try to explain this concept to people in different ways.

Let's say my job is to manage your horses pain and comfort.
The reality is that I play a 10% (or even less) role in your horses overall life. The 90% of your horses life is their nutrition, their paddock, their management, their rider, their tack, their paddock mates - the list goes on!

Sometimes my 10% will be what's missing from your horse. This is where a treatment works, and you carry on to kick the goals. This means you're nailing your 90% 🥳
Sometimes my 10% makes no difference, or doesn't stick.
Then we need to look at the other 90%. 🧐
In these cases we have to address their management, their diet, their gear, their ridden career, their exercise, etc.

But do you know how many people want to change the 90%?
Not many.
Too many place all the pressure on the person providing the 10% and expect things to change.😣

The same goes for their MOVEMENT.
If you want to improve their movement then it needs to become more than 10% of their day or life.
10% of 24 hours is 2.4 hours.
Does your horse move for more than 2.4 hours a day?
Seems silly, but honestly think about it....
If your horse stands in the corner of the paddock or yard for 11 hours a day, and you ride it for 30 mins, you're well under 10%.
This means you're likely to not make a huge change in their overall health.

This is incredibly important if you're trying to strengthen your horse, make it more supple, or improve their balance.
You need to encourage as much movement as possible.

This also goes for setbacks and problems.
If you support your horses body and movement 90% of the time, they are allowed to move "less than perfect" for 10% of the time.
For example - they might get hot and run at a jump with a hollow back. If they only have a hollow back for 10% of their work, and they work correctly for 90% of the time, you're winning. You don't need to beat yourself up.
❗️ But not if it's the opposite way around!

🩷 Look at what you do 90% of the time.
Then think, is it at the greatest benefit to my horse?
If the greatest benefits to your horse are only occurring for 10% then you won't get the results you're chasing.

I always want to know …. ✅

I always want to hear how your horse is going.
People comment that they “wanted” to update me but weren’t sure how, or if I would want to hear.
I always want to hear ✅

I want to know if you just had the best ride ever, or the biggest breakthrough 🥳🥳
But I also want to know if it’s falling to pieces and we’re not hitting the mark yet 😭🫣

I can’t guarantee i’ll reply right away, but always send me that message.
You might not think I am invested in your success - but I am 💪

29/02/2024

Anyone who’s had those “real” conversations with me will know my answer when it comes to “how often should I worm my horse”.

Since owning our property and diving down the rabbit hole of regenerative farming, we have adopted different practices now to what was traditionally told to us.
This article highlights a couple of big practices we have incorporated:
1. Think hard about what drugs and when you give to your horses. Gone are the days when you worm every 6-8 weeks because the box told you to.

2. Sometimes you need to add to your pasture, not just continually take away. This includes manure.

Practices such as these are scary sometimes, and not everyone agrees. But with the overall health of our equines declining rather than improving, maybe we need to become a little backwards.

OUR FRIEND, THE DUNG BEETLE (repost)
We may be coming to the end of summer, but dung beetles are still around! The dung beetle requires manure as a food source for their offspring. The adults bury balls of manure down in the soil for their larvae to develop on. If you ever collect manure that has had dung beetles in it, you’ll see the holes in the soil.

The activity of dung beetles is very useful in the control of the free-living stages of parasitic worms. In hot, dry conditions the aeration of manure pats by beetles is enough to fully desiccate the manure which results in the death of worm eggs and larvae. Therefore, if you have dung beetles on your property in summer, you no longer have to collect manure or harrow it. In cooler times, dung beetles may still be present and can lower the number of infective larvae emerging from pats by up to 74%.

In your pasture management plan, you should aim to help and encourage dung beetles as much as possible. Not only dung beetles, but all the soil invertebrates that help to degrade manure. It has been found that over 200 different insect species call manure home, all which play an important role in manure degradation.

One thing to avoid in summer is worming your animals. All classes of worming-drugs have a mode of action that means they are also toxic to a range of other organisms. Wormers are designed to kill nematodes (roundworms), and so drugs that pass out in the manure can have a toxic effect on free-living soil worms (such as earthworms). The mectin drugs (abamectin, ivermectin, moxidectin) are also toxic to insects, and so manure of treated animals can be toxic to a range of insects, including dung beetles.
Different species of insect and nematode are affected in different ways. For example, dung beetles may still feed/aerate a manure pat of a treated animal however the beetle larvae die or undergo abnormal development. Overall, the presence of wormers in manure has a negative effect on the rate of degradation of manure.
Therefore over summer, avoid worming your horses/livestock unless faced with a case of clinical disease. If you get FEC performed, it may be wise to increase the EPG cut off to 500EPG compared to the normal 200EPG. If worming is required, ensure that you collect the manure for the first week after worming to prevent ill effects from the high concentrations of drug in the faeces.

This summer have a think about the humble dung beetle and the wonderful work they do. The world is full of species that thrive in what we consider waste – these small but mighty creatures play some of the most important roles in ecosystems.
Additionally, if you don’t have dung beetles, there are places online where you can order them as well. A box of dung beetles in the post seems like such a nicer thing to receive in the mail than a bag of, well, dung.

28/02/2024

You hear me bang on about pain and listening to your horse all the time. It’s something that I am becoming more and more passionate about as the years go on.

I’m all for people riding their horses, working their horses, setting goals and working through the mess. But I am also all for taking a step back, putting your goals and ego aside, and making sure both parties of the team are happy to keep going.

In the last 6 months I have had to do this exact thing with now two of my own horses. They’re now both retired. Both showed me only subtle signs. Both had been excelling in their discliplines and both had been looking after me regardless.
I wished so much for my suspicions to not be true, but both times colleagues confirmed it for me and my heart was broken.

It’s so hard to put your aspirations aside, and so hard to work through the mammoth task of trying to figure out “do we keep going”. Some horses can be managed and their heart trumps their injuries. But for some horses dreams are shattered.

Figuring out what is pain, what is behaviour, what can be managed and what can’t be is so hard. Not every behaviour is a solid red flag, but a pattern most certainly is.

I just want you to know that I empathise if this is what you’re going through. There are so many emotional factors that come into play when it comes to our horses and this lifestyle we choose for ourselves.

Pain in your horse can be easily missed!

Pain is often a riders number one concern, however common signs of it are often overlooked.
They're often written off with comments such as
🚩 "lazy" or "quiet"
🚩 "stiff"
🚩 "naughty"
🚩 "just a mare"

There are soo many ways your horse can show pain and discomfort. The list below I have put together is simply a summary of some of the most common signs I see.

The degree of pain with these signs also varies considerably - some pain is intense, some is mild.
💙 So if your horse shows pain or any of these signs, don't be discouraged - be motivated! 💙

➡️ Can some of these just be due to their normal body conformation? 100%
➡️ Can some of these be true behaviour and bad habits? 100%
➡️ Can some of these just not be fixed? 100%

✅ But you should always rule out pain first.

After surgery 1 I set myself a goal. To aim for Australia's Greatest Horsewoman 2024, before it's time for surgery number 2.
This is a huge goal and a huge challenge for me. I am so nervous and so excited 🥳🥳

I am also so excited to be running next to friends and clients 🙌🙌

For this reason I am not working at all on Thursdays, setting aside some much needed me time for me and my horse. This also means I will be away for 1 week in April.

Exciting news! 🥳
There's another new face around here.

I would like to introduce my new nurse / off-sider / horse lunger / Annie distractor / all round hard worker, Caeli.

Caeli joined me here in January, fresh to the Veterinary world.
She has a keen interest in, and has done further studies in Equine Nutrition and Myotherapy. She is also about to start her Bachelor of Veterinary Technology through Charles Sturt University.

Caeli joins me three days a week this year so no doubt you will see her either here, in Bundalong or at Erin's Equine Services.

I have been in denial for a while now about needing extra help to keep the business, farm and horses going. But with big plans ahead of me I am looking forward to having Caeli join us on this equine endevour.

Don't be afraid to say Hello and make her feel welcome. She has been worded up already that the clients and horses are our number one priority here.

Our Story

Equine Health, Spinal & Dentistry is owned and run by horse enthusiast and Equine Veterinarian Dr. Sabine Ware.

Sabine has spent her entire life around horses. Growing up in Whittlesea, Victoria, she spent her childhood attending Pony Club with her horses, as well as call outs with her Veterinarian father. Her equestrian pursuits took her into various disciplines including Eventing, Polocrosse, Mounted Games and even Harness!

After many years working in Private Practice throughout Victoria and Equine Practice in England, Sabine decided to start up the business you know today.

Frustrated by the limitations of conventional veterinary medicine, she went on to do further study in Equine Dentistry and Rehabilitation in the USA. Meaning now she can offer various treatment options including acupuncture, dry needling, chiropractic and much more.
