We’ve been seeing (and hearing) of a lot of horses getting impactions this summer ☀️

➡️ impactions are (most commonly) feed that becomes blocked in the gut (colon most commonly). The signs range from being “dull” and less poo than normal, all the way through to surgical colic.

There’s lots of ways to help avoid impactions, such as good dental care, slow feeding, adding salt, adequate water, oils and much more.

What we’ve been doing is
✅ soaking our Hay Cubes. This gives me reassurance that I am not just adding “dry fibre” to my horses gut. They absorb a great amount of water 💦 and soak down well, whilst still maintaining the desired fibre length.
✅ Salt - adding salt to their feed (up to 2 tablespoons, sometimes more) - this helps with muscle function, but also encourages drinking.
✅ Fresh water 💦 always available (and monitored)
✅ Counting poos and taking note of how dry or hard they are. If they’re too dry or hard, we will reduce their dry hay amount and increase their soaked cubes until we’re happy with their manure again.
✅ Switched my soaked hard feed times from evenings to mornings (and sometimes again midday on hot days) - so I know moisture is being added to their gut first thing ☀️

You can use chaff, soaked beet, etc as your soaked fibre source for sure. We are just huge advocates of hay and hay cubes.

Happy Feeding! 🌱

A moment of gratitude 🙏🥰

have supported me and my horses personally for years. But today was our first arrival of cubes for the Rehabilitation horses that join our programs 💪🥳

To be able to provide such a great product to those rehab horses in our care is such a wonderful and exciting feeling! I cannot express my gratitude enough to Multicube, who continue to support us and our Rehabilitation Clinic here in Seymour.

The timing could not be better - I stop consults tomorrow, but have a full house of rehab horses here for the next few weeks. We are now stocked and ready for 2025 🙏🥳😍

Thank you again MultiCube Stockfeeds ✅

🌟 Here it IS! 🌟

The applications for the 2025 Sporthorse Rider Mentorship Program are now OPEN 🥳

Last year, I welcomed 3 riders to come learn from all my mistakes and all my knowledge, as we worked together to achieve some of their rider goals.
💜 These three riders made me so proud - watching them and their horses change, grow, condition, be pushed out of their comfort zone and take advantage of the services we have was so rewarding. 💜

** Why do I run this? **
Because I want to help our up and coming riders make sense of this confusing equestrian world. I want to hold your hand and help you navigate your riding goals for the next 12 months.

I am tweaking the program, and am now looking for 2 MORE riders to take on new open positions.
These positions are sponsored - meaning a heap of freebies, as well as discounts across the board.

✅ I am looking for very specific riders. I want to see the fire in you to do better, learn more and commit to this journey.

** What do you get? **
This mentorship applies to 1 rider and 1 horse.
- Free riding lessons ( 1 per month for 12 months)
- Free weekly water treadmill sessions (1 per week)
- 1 free dental per year
- Free body work sessions (1 per month)
- discounted rates on medications, vet treatment, and much more.

** What do I need to do to apply? **
You need to make a short video (2-4 minutes)
- who you are
- about your horse
- what are you riding goals over the next 12 months?

Then email this to [email protected]

APPLICATIONS CLOSE DECEMBER 31ST - to be announced in January.

Have been loving hearing the reasons why people come to us, or recommend us

✅ “you’re going to be honest with me”
❤️ “you make sure you treat the horse, not just do tests”
✅ “you make me feel heard”
❤️ “you’re practical and real world”
✅ “you don’t stop until you have a plan”

The real world application of treating horses (and people) everyday is very different to what people think. The pressure I feel on the daily is huge, but that’s because I invest my all into my job. Sometimes we can’t always find an answer, but a plan is as good as an answer.

Hearing what people think as an outsider is always eye opening and helps keep me grounded in our mission ❤️

We are very spoilt here now!
Wednesday was a day of packages and shoes with our farrier Brent Kelly at Equine Performance Development
Then all the horses were able to head straight to our water treadmill for a cooling, low-impact work-out.

From 2025 we are excited to offer more regular scheduled farrier days here, allowing us to better serve our client horses.

I can't believe it is almost the end of the year! 🎄

We have had an EPIC second half to this year which has been incredibly exciting (and full on!!)

Please start thinking of any final appointments as I will be closing consults from Monday December 23rd - Monday January 6th.
➡️ and we are already solidly booked up until half way through December at this stage.

Don't worry - we'll be back in January 2024 - bigger and better than ever! 💪🙌

I will still be seeing urgent cases in that time, and be working on our in-patients rehabs - but these girlies need some breathing time over Christmas to keep our heads in the game.

Interest in our services is growing and I appreciate everyone for their patience as I try and keep up with all messages and requests. It is actually impossible right now to keep up - so I thank everyone for so much support. 💜🩷
- please continue to message me as "giving someone a buzz" is near on impossible at this stage. 😆😴

Please get in touch soon if you're after an appointment, because I hate breaking people's hearts when I say "we're full". 💔

There are definitely some ideas that I like to keep out of social media, that I save for just conversations between myself and my clients.
But this I feel is one I want to throw out there, especially given Equitana this week…

There is a concept running through the Equine Physio and Bodywork world that has me a little baffled. I see it being beneficial to riders, but not so much to the horses.

The concept is
“if the walk is not perfect, don’t trot. If the trot is not perfect, don’t canter”.

This concept baffles me.
The walk, trot and canter and 3 individual gaits with 3 individual foot falls.
Each gait creates different degrees of lateral motion, axial motion and flexion-extension through the spine. Each gait creates different pressure through the abdomen and diaphragm. And each gait loads different elements of the horses body.

The only linear difference in the gaits is speed….
Ie: the trot is faster than the walk, and the canter is faster than the trot.
But what does that have to do with enhancing your horses’ biomechanics?

I have heard people argue “balance” concepts with me, but that also doesn’t act in a linear way. You can have a horse very well balanced in canter, with a terrible trot.
Just watch the gaits your horse chooses to have in the paddock.

If you understand the spinal motion in a horse, you can actually use the 3 gaits to your advantage. For example, studies have shown that pelvic range of motion and thoracolumbar flexion-extension range of motion was greatest at canter, with lateral bend and pelvic range of motion at its lowest in trot.
This means a horse with a weak lumbar spine and weak pelvis can actually use canter as part of its rehab to build up hind end strength.

Horses at trot are actually more likely to be inclined to throw their weight onto the forehand if it’s not being recognised, meaning you can trot for years and not build up their back and pelvis like you want.
Are there conditions where canter is not beneficial? Of course there are. But they are specific conditions, not a blanket approach.

Think back to all those dressage and dry work lessons when you’re instructor says “the best trot you’ll get is straight after a canter”….

Our Story

Equine Health, Spinal & Dentistry is owned and run by horse enthusiast and Equine Veterinarian Dr. Sabine Ware.

Sabine has spent her entire life around horses. Growing up in Whittlesea, Victoria, she spent her childhood attending Pony Club with her horses, as well as call outs with her Veterinarian father. Her equestrian pursuits took her into various disciplines including Eventing, Polocrosse, Mounted Games and even Harness!

After many years working in Private Practice throughout Victoria and Equine Practice in England, Sabine decided to start up the business you know today.

Frustrated by the limitations of conventional veterinary medicine, she went on to do further study in Equine Dentistry and Rehabilitation in the USA. Meaning now she can offer various treatment options including acupuncture, dry needling, chiropractic and much more.
