Founded in 1959, AWLQ is one of Queensland’s most dynamic and best-loved charities. Our organisation is the leader in the zero euthanasia movement nationally and is considered a national leader in animal welfare. AWLQ locally provides a safe haven for close to 10,000 stray and homeless animals each year, while also assisting other communities in saving homeless animals. In addition to our shelter

work, we are committed to keeping pets and people together by providing lifesaving support and resources to people in need with companion animals. We are known for our grassroots and innovative community-based animal welfare work including our community vet clinics, Getting to Zero, Golden Hearts Seniors’ Support Program and the National Desexing Network.

There are a small number of animals onsite which have all been moved to higher ground and into secure buildings for their safety. These animals are being attending to and cared for by our amazing staff and will continue to be cared for over the coming days

A cyclone warning remains in place across SEQLD & NENSW. Tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall as a Category 2 storm late this Friday, bringing severe winds, heavy rain, and the potential for flooding. Your pets rely on you in emergencies—take action now to keep them safe! 🐶🐱

- For emergency vet care during this time, please contact an alternative emergency vet.
- Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Ipswich Councils will not be receiving stray animals during this time. If you find a stray, please contain the animal safely until the event is over.
- No donations for Op Shops will be accepted during the storm.
- We are no longer searching for foster carers to take animals during the storm. Thank you all for helping us find temporary homes for our animals!
- If you find injured wildlife, please contact the RSPCA at 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625).

We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support from our community as we prepare for Cyclone Alfred. Your concern for our animals and your offers to help have truly touched our hearts. 💜

Thanks to our incredible network of foster carers and staff working tirelessly, we’ve successfully moved most of our animals into temporary care and will continue to do so throughout the rest of the day. Our Reception team are receiving an outpouring of offers of support, but at this time as we prepare for Cyclone Alfred, we regret we are unable to process any new foster carers or adoptions. Due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred, the Ipswich Rehoming Centre, including the Ipswich Council Pound, will be closed to the public from Wednesday, March 5th, with operations resuming as soon as it is safe to do so.

As a precaution, all animals have been safely relocated to ensure their well-being. Our team will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.

Earlier this year, Monnie (previously Monica) was lucky enough to find a home with Katelin. 🏡💜

"I fostered Monica in early December while she waited for her desexing. Monica was a shy, timid and anxious little pup with the biggest heart. Monica grew to know what love is and made herself very welcome in the home. Since leaving a puppy farm, Monica has seen the sights; and has been on her first boat ride, first day at the beach, and even traveled through harbour town! We spent the festive season with her and gave her a first Christmas to remember! She spent Australia Day water skiing and being surrounded by love! Monnie terrorises the other house occupants and loves to run a muck! She has been a joy to foster so much that she has since joined our family permanently! We adopted Monnie early January and she has been nothing but a blessing. Monica turns heads with her golden locks and people love hearing about her story when out in public! We feel privileged to be able to give her the life she deserved from the start! We love our little Monnie girl!."
