Founded in 1959, AWLQ is one of Queensland’s most dynamic and best-loved charities. Our organisation is the leader in the zero euthanasia movement nationally and is considered a national leader in animal welfare. AWLQ locally provides a safe haven for close to 10,000 stray and homeless animals each year, while also assisting other communities in saving homeless animals. In addition to our shelter

work, we are committed to keeping pets and people together by providing lifesaving support and resources to people in need with companion animals. We are known for our grassroots and innovative community-based animal welfare work including our community vet clinics, Getting to Zero, Golden Hearts Seniors’ Support Program and the National Desexing Network.

Breaking news: There’s a cuddle shortage…and I’m the solution 🐾📰

Name’s Neo! I’m 10 months old, part Staffy, part Lab and 100% snuggle enthusiast. 💕 I might start off a little shy (new places can feel big and scary), but with patience, calm vibes and a cosy crate, I’ll bloom into your loyal shadow. 🌟

Looking for a way to give back in 2026? Why not spend a few hours helping animals in need? 🐾

AWLQ is looking for passionate animal lovers to join our volunteer team! You’ll help care for cats, dogs and pocket pets waiting for their forever homes.

We have 4-4.5 hour shifts available in the mornings and afternoons seven days a week. Responsibilities include:
• daily feeding
• providing food and water and cleaning bowls
• replacing toys
• sweeping and mopping pens, crates and corridors
• cleaning litter trays and food bowls
• rubbish management and disposal
• assisting with linen and laundry
• helping to sooth and settle our furry friends and offer them enrichment.
