Breeders and Importers of Gypsy Cobs and Merle Poodles in Australia
As one of the founders of this superb breed in Australia we have bred, imported and exported Gypsy Cobs of the finest quality for 18 years.
2018 sparked yet another love affair that saw the arrival of Australias first phantom merle poodle.
This is another interesting one to follow on from the rabbits carrying equine embryo post below that I thought I'd share as I have never forgotten this one, even as a kid with zero clue about such things it amazed me.
The first recorded stallion collection, transport of the semen and insemination into mares was carried out by the Bedouin over 3000 years ago
I've had a great few days at Euroa learning how to freeze semen and updating a few of our techniques for chilled semen and collecting BUT one of the most fascinating things I learnt was that in the 70s several maiden Welsh pony mares had embryos flushed who were then implanted in the oviducts of two rabbits and transported via road for over 30 hours from England to Polland, if that wasn't mind blowing enough, three of the five were successful 🤯

Posted this comment in a dog group and I’ve about dislocated my shoulder patting myself on the back. I feel strongly that most modern breeders are disconnected from sound breeding practices, and need this perspective.
The old adage is “if it works it’s line breeding, if it doesn’t it’s inbreeding,” but that line depends entirely on the genetics used. Avoiding an arbitrary COI give new breeders training wheels to develop selection skills, but the outcome of a close mating depends entirely on the genetics used, not the relatedness of the parents.
Fixing characteristics is a benefit, not the function of proper selection. The function is to permanently remove deleterious traits from the breeding population to prevent future suffering. One of my best (most fertile and athletic) bulls has a .29 COI. I know of a popular breeding boar whose pedigree was mother son matings to one sow for 5-6 generations. Are they not in**ed, just because their excellent genetics could handle it?
All breeders should keep in mind that outcross Heterosis A) is not heritable B) requires at least 2 isolated gene pools C) *Buries Recessive Problems*
If someone is not isolating, concentrating, and *properly selecting* a specific gene pool, (without greed or sentiment) they’re just playing around hiding faults, diluting other breeder’s genetics and hopefully learning better selection skills.

Surrey Springs and Glyndower Brea are currently starting to train and prep the boys.
This will be a bit of a slow process as we have to work around babysitting my toddler and fly in fly out work so we will work through them a couple at a time over the coming months.
🟠 Ages are from seven months to rising two.
🟠 EMH is from 13 to 15.2hh (please note for a few I'm having a rough guess I need to measure legs to be more precise)
🟠 Colours are, black, bay and white, Buckskin and white.
All boys will
Lead, tie, pick up feet, be float trained, hot washed, worked over and through obstacles including at liberty, have desensitization training these include tarps over and under, rattling tins in bags, umbrellas, hoolahoops, platforms, bridges, flags, sudden noises, colourful spinning objects, balls just to name a few. They are used to all sorts of traffic from pushbikes though motobikes, cars, trucks, farm machinery. Used to dogs, cattle, poultry, cats and kids.
The older boys will be lightly mouthed and long reined, have saddles on and off etc.
So, if you will be looking for an exceptional gelding or stud prospect we may just have someone!

I have been very lucky to see Lulu crossed with the lines of EarthShaker, Glyndower Brea Diesel (from Glyndower Brea Rhapsody who is a daughter of our old boy, The Paladin imp UK dec) and The Arctic Wolf des Légendes Celtiques imp Fr and I have very much loved all three foals she has produced with our stallions which gives me great confidence that Iron will click with those bloodlines within our stud.

We are still getting a lot of enquiries for shipped semen. As much as our boys are happy to "help" they have all said they they don't want to collect anymore this season, it's actually getting very hard to convince them with the drop in hormones at this time of year where we are. We have gone past our usual cut off by a month but they really need to call it quits now. Thanks for understanding and apologies to those who want to breed later foals.

🎊 RIDDEN GELDING COMING UP!!!
I know this is an old photo of a scruffy winter baby Blue Bear BUT he's in to be started (gently) under saddle, it will of course be very age appropriate as he is only two and a half years old but I just have to say what an absolute dream this gelding is, he's an old soul who has definitely been here before as NOTHING phases him, he takes to everything new as if it's old hat already. I have no doubt that he will make the most outstanding first ridden pony when he's a little older. Bluebear adores people and is currently very learning and doing new things obsessed, he is such a happy little sticky beak!
When he is ready he will have completed the following:
Obstacles such as flags, tunnels, over tarps, up on platforms, all manner of flappy things (if you do a YouTube search for Surrey Springs Paddington Bear you will see one of his brothers to give you an idea)
We will side line him from the land cruiser as I think it's great for them to learn to lead from a vehicle, this will later be used to take him out saddled up through some bush trails without the weight of a rider on his baby bones.
He is already pretty traffic proof but we will do some road work anyway.
He loves a bath and is easy with his feet, you don't need to catch him to bring him in, he will just walk home with you from wherever on the farm he is.
He will long rein and walk and trot on both Reins but we won't work much on canter at his age. He will be both mouthed and bitless.
He will be able to be saddled and wear a tarp, whirly gigs etc as he goes around.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A RIDDEN MOUNT.
This season I will have retired one of my beloved mares from breeding while she is still young enough (around 10) to have a wonderful and productive ride / drive career ahead of them.
Unfortunately as a stud when you are working towards a goal and have foals born in any given year that you want to retain you soon have to make some very hard choices.
I don't want my girls to rot in a paddock or be bred year in year out until they have a thread bare uterus. I would like to give them the BEST opportunity to have a better life, so my question to you all is what would you expect or want in a mare like this? What sort of education would she need to have to be someone you would consider bringing home forever?

Annie is such a beautiful soul who was immediately accepted by the mares so I decided to let her out with them as she was looking so sad all on her own, watching across the fence, she now has the very important role if chief baby sitter 🥰

Stallion collection fees.
2024 has seen a rise in the cost of being able to collect. It's now $440.
This includes our driving it to a depot at midnight to meet a courier which is several hours for us and saves you approx $600 to $800 in courier fees so.... PLEASE RETURN THE SEMEN BOXES WITH ALL PARTS INTACT (less the semen vials, they are recyclable and not able to be reused) these are not environmentally friendly and are designed for multiple use

Even though these two aren't related at all its still such an annoying little brother moment 🤣 Tianis filly was completely fed up with Rivers colt by the end of the day. The little ratbag would have better luck with his cousin, Jinxies filly, she too is an absolute pest.

Whyyy 🤦♀️🫣😫 Darn Cobs and their cobberising. Here we have a prime example of why I had to invent that word! This is supposed to be a ROUND yard and the buckets dont need to be on the floor either. As per usual it was completely unnecessary for them to do this, but they are Cobs and Cobs think barging stuff around is life. I think there will be five stallions whos names I wont mention on the dinner menu... *cough* Kalahari, Tiashan, Cub, Spotty and MAYBE Sweep (though I doubt he was part of this honestly, it smacks of the rest of them though! )
