We have made changes to the way our services function:

Our Morning Adventures and Puppy School services remain unaffected, but the training process now operates differently:

Initial consultation

The first step in beginning your training journey with Chloe's Canine Co is to have an initial consultation. This consultation, which lasts for 90 minutes, is used to gather a complete history of your dog, discuss your training goals, determine the number of sessions needed, decide if 1 on 1 behaviour modification or day training is more suitable, and establish management techniques to be used between the initial consultation and subsequent sessions.

Packages

Choose from the following session options:
- 4 sessions
- 8 sessions
- 12 sessions

Approach

1 on 1 behavior modification

Our 1 on 1 behaviour modification sessions will reveal the secrets to having a well-behaved dog and will enable you to once again enjoy spending time with your beloved pet. These sessions will be conducted with the owner present, and full support will be provided between sessions.

Day training

When you are occupied with life's demands, Chloe will handle the training on your behalf!

Regular updates and videos of your dog's progress during these sessions will be provided. After completing three day training sessions, a handover session will be arranged between you, your dog, and Chloe, in order to teach you the necessary skills to maintain your dog's new behaviours. If you choose 8 or 12 sessions, this process will be repeated: three day training sessions followed by one handover session.

Training doesn't have to feel like a burden!

Typically, I train my dog during walks, I reward good behavior when he's around other dogs or when we practice recall. I also incorporate training throughout the day by having him sit before going outside, before joining me on the couch, and before meals etc.

However, if I want to teach my dog something specific or if there are too many distractions outside, I split my training sessions into two shorter sessions, lasting 2-5 minutes each, per day.

I've noticed that my clients find it more manageable to do these sessions in the morning, before their dogs have breakfast, and in the evening, before their dogs have dinner. If the food used for their meals is highly enticing, it can be incorporated into these sessions.

Always keep in mind the abilities of your own dog. Some dogs, especially easily distracted puppies, can only handle a training session with three repetitions for example. The goal is to finish just before your dog's motivation reaches its peak, so they (and you) stay engaged and interested in the training!

So proud of Yindi, and her wonderful mumma for all the hard work she has put in 😍 Yindi used to bark at every person and every dog she saw and now we have reaction free walks where she actively chooses to disengage. She is still progressing rapidly and I can’t wait to see where we end up ❤️

What’s the difference?
1 on 1 behavior modification:
Get help with your dog's behaviour with personalised sessions designed to empower you and your pooch. Say goodbye to leash pulling and other unwanted behaviours as we guide you through three consultations to achieve harmony. Between sessions, you complete the training with support from Chloe.

Day Training:
Let Chloe handle the heavy lifting while you focus on life's demands. With our day train program, we will sit down and discuss your goals in our initial consult, then, leave the rest to Chloe. Your dog will receive three training sessions, finishing in a handover session where you'll learn how to maintain their newfound behaviors. This option is also great for those who may not have the time or who may not feel comfortable handling their dog for various reasons.

When people tell me that their dog isn't motivated by food or treats, I always inquire about what they are using. Typically, they mention things like jerky or liver treats, which may be enjoyable for the dogs but not quite enticing enough.

Trainers often refer to high value treats as something small, soft, and smelly. This is because these treats allow for more repetitions in a shorter time, motivate the dog, and lead to greater success.

Some examples of high value treats include rolls from (my personal favourite) and as well as shredded boiled chicken and shredded cheese.

In this post, I have tagged two rolls that are actually a kind of raw food for dogs, but I prefer to cut them into small cubes and use them as treats during training sessions and walks.

Comment below which treats you use for your dog 🐶

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS IN DOG TRAINING

Step 1: The crucial ingredient - Your active participation!

Your commitment, consistency, and dedication are essential for achieving lasting success in your dog's behaviour and development. Without your engagement, even the most talented trainer may struggle to unlock your pup's full potential.

Step 2: Add a skilled, qualified, and educated dog trainer to the mix.

Choose a trainer who clearly outlines their education and engages in continued learning to stay up to date with best practices. With the right trainer by your side, you'll have the expertise needed to guide your pup toward success. Remember, the dog training industry is unregulated and anyone can claim to be a dog trainer or canine behaviourist (which is just a fancy way of saying dog trainer, but more on that in another post).

Step 3: Mix it all together!

Think of it as a team effort: you provide the love, time, and effort, while your trainer offers guidance, techniques, and support. Together, you form an unbeatable duo, addressing challenges and strengthening the bond between you and your dog.

Happy training friends!

Top three skills every dog owner should prioritise: recall, "bed," and loose leash walking, along with step-by-step instructions on how to teach them!

Recall:

1. Call your dogs name followed by the cue “come” using a cheerful tone
2. Make yourself interesting by running backwards to entice your dog to come to you.
3. Reward them with a high value treat when they arrive!
4. Once your pup consistently comes back to you, incorporate luring them into a sitting position when they reach your feet. Then, release them with “Free” before offering a reward.

Remember to give the cue ("Champ, come!") rather than just using your dogs name.

"Bed" Cue:

1. Say the cue ("bed") in a cheerful tone while pointing to the designated spot.
2. Lure your dog onto the mat using a treat, moving it slowly over the mat to keep them engaged.
3. Then lure your dog into a down by slowly moving the treat down to the ground between their front paws.
5. When they lay down, treat them. Continue to treat to keep your dog on the mat. After a few seconds, tell your dog, “Free,” and allow them to get up.

As your dog improves, gradually decrease the frequency of treats given for staying on their mat. Eventually, they'll remain without any treats, but occasional acknowledgment for their good behavior helps reinforce the skill.

Loose Leash Walking:

1. Teach your dog to stand calmly beside you without pulling. Hold treats in one hand, praising and treating when they're calm or make eye contact. If they pull, don't tug the leash; wait until they return. When they do, praise and treat.
2. Once they’re on a slack leash, start walking, rewarding after the first step if they don't dash forward. Keep walking and praise and treat every other step, gradually increasing the distance between rewards. If they pull, wait for slack in the leash before moving and reward them quickly for walking nearby. Vary the reward frequency to keep them engaged.

Implement red light/green light if your dog pulls: stop when the leash tightens, wait for it to loosen slightly, then proceed. Reinforce that a tight leash halts the walk, while a loose leash signals continued walking.

Although there are cases where quick fixes are not the solution, there are rare occasions when it may be suitable!

Many dog owners face the issue of puppy chewing. Oftentimes, puppies are given too much freedom too soon, and suddenly, all of your favorite items and some potentially dangerous objects become their go-to chew toys. A potential solution to this problem is to create a designated confinement area, such as a pen, equipped with the puppy's bed, water, and some toys. This confinement area often effectively resolves the issue. However, it is important to consider that there may be underlying causes for your dog's chewing behavior, such as anxiety or a lack of mental or physical stimulation, which should be addressed accordingly.

Food plays a crucial role! Many clients claim that their dogs lack motivation for food, only to reveal a piece of kibble or liver treat. By switching to high-value treats (more information to be provided in a future post), you will witness a remarkable increase in your dog's engagement and motivation. It's a quick and simple solution!

Digging often indicates boredom or stress in dogs. Instead of allowing them to manifest this behavior, offer them more suitable outlets for their energy, such as a food puzzle, licki mat, or bone marrow chew. This often resolves the digging issue as it provides the mental stimulation that dogs need, and they will likely take a peaceful nap afterward. Even better, you can provide your dog with a designated sandpit where they can freely indulge in their digging instincts! However, it is important to note that digging, like chewing, can also be a sign of anxiety or a lack of mental and physical stimulation. In such cases, it is crucial to address the potential underlying issues.

Remember, if there are deeper reasons behind your dog's "misbehavior," it is important to address them in conjunction with the aforementioned solutions. Otherwise, these issues may manifest in alternative ways.

A quick fix is tempting but it’s often not the answer. Pre being a trainer, I fell victim to the allure of a quick fix and have suffered the consequences.
Read below to find out when it may not be the solution:

1. Aggressive behaviours often stem from fear related issues. While a pop on the leash may stop the dog from reacting, it does not address the underlying emotion. It’s important to help change how your dog feels about a trigger rather than just suppressing their reaction. When suppression occurs we often see dogs who bite “out of nowhere” as they have learnt that they will be punished for behaviours like growling.

2. That bark collar likely will stop your dog from barking, but there’s many stories of dogs figuring out these devices and they do not address the underlying issue. Depending on why your dog is barking, they may also find an alternate behaviour, now barking is not possible. These collars also often are set off by other sounds in the environment, may malfunction and punish your dog when they are not barking and will likely cause your dog stress. If all of the above doesn’t deter you, now imagine that you forgot to charge the collar or cannot find it, something as simple as that has your dog back to barking hours on end.

3. Separation anxiety is a DOOZY! You’ve stopped your dog being able to escape by putting chicken wire at the bottom of your fence, but now your dog is barking, howling, digging in the yard, chewing through the back door and causing damage to not only your property but also their physical and mental health.

Stay tuned for more posts on when quick fixes MAY be the answer and other helpful tips!

The first photo is a screenshot from a video I took of my first session with where I had messed up and moved past Yindi which frightened her and caused her to lunge at me (there was no bite).

The second photo was taken at our second session! Yindi’s owner has gone above and beyond with her training of Yindi and would you take a look at the pay off! Yindi is still having big feelings about some people and dogs but the progress she has made in just one session is phenomenal.

Go Yindi and Go Mum! 🥳

Champ is 5 today 🥹
Here’s 5 big moments from the last 5 years.

1. The day I met Champ in his first families home - LOOK AT HIS LIL CONE HEADDD
2. The first walk he came on with me
3. His first night in our home when we rehomed him
4. His first birthday
5. Him comforting me on the day his reactivity all started - this is obviously a negative experience, however one that really shaped my life, career and how I view and respond to dogs and humans

Thank you my darling boy for all the memories, even the rough ones ❤️
