Fellowship of the Paws - Dog training Dog training and behaviour, in home puppy training, one on one personalised programs, pet greyhound What is a fellowship?

A friendly association, especially with people who share one's interests. My interests are dogs and teaching people how to build a strong bond with their hound. I make dog training fun and adapt it to what is important to you and your furry family member. We have puppy classes at various locations across Brisbane available for pups from 8 weeks of age. The Fellowship of the Paws is a place for you to come and meet other people wanting to learn about their dog and his/her behaviour.

Bre being a good girl waiting for her turn to see Lindsey from Animal Physiotherapy Solutions

She’s had some limping on and off as well as a sore neck so we are getting some professional help.

It’s so important to carefully watch our dogs for any potential pain and address it. Pain can change behaviour in our dogs.

It can cause your dog to be less tolerant of dogs and people in their space, being patted or even playing.

If you feel like your dog has had a sudden change in behaviour then get a vet check and ask them to look for pain.

Watch your dog, are they struggling to get up or lie down, are they restless and not sleeping as well. All of these can be signs of pain.

I want to be on top of any issues and see these sessions as preventative.

Rant alert…..

When a vet clinic has an open grassed area for the comfort of your dog, to help reduce stress of having to stay in a waiting room AND provides poo bags…. The least you can do is pick up your dog’s poo!!!

I’ve been running puppy classes here for over a year now and in the last couple months I’ve had to clean up the yard before we can even start!! It’s horrendous at the moment…..

So if you are a client of Redlands Veterinary Clinic and use their yard for your dog, be responsible and considerate and pick up your dog poo!! This is not your personal space, this is a public space.

😡😤🤬😖😠

I’m feeling all the angry faces tonight because I had to pick up another 5 poos.

For those in the Kedron area, please be extra vigilant with what your dog eats while out.

Please be aware that we have seen a few suspected cases of dog rat bait poisoning in the local area over the last few days. Do not let your dog eat anything on the ground out in public!

Breaking the stereotype of greyhounds as only couch potatoes!!

Bre and I competed in another scent work trial today run by Redlands Dog Obedience Club

There were two searches, each with one hide (birch) and we had 2 minutes in each area.

She gained a qualification in exteriors AND came third overall (31 dogs competed) with a time of 13.72 seconds 💥

She also gained a qualification in containers coming 17th overall (34 dogs competed) with a time of 39.07 seconds.

I am so proud of how far we have come as a team which has been possible because Cass and the team at Get Woof'd have been amazing teachers.

I’m excited to see what we achieve together this year.

Meet Hunter, Jeorgi and Spencer. These 3 cuties have been having trouble living together so their family called for some help.

Multi dog homes are complicated and need a little more structure.

For this family they have a bit of work to do but are off to a good start.

Some of the things we did:
🐾 Communication - making sure they understand how to earn reward
🐾 Resources - understanding that behaviour stems from a desire for resources. They can include access to humans, beds, toys etc
🐾 Place training - vital for calmness around the home
🐾 Muzzle training - making sure they are all comfortable wearing a muzzle
🐾 Management - it’s the key to keeping arousal levels lower
🐾 One on one time - ensuring each dog gets individual training and play

I’m looking forward to working with these guys. ❤️

Recall hasn’t been on the top of my priority list for Bre so far but this year it’s on our goal list.

We went for a trip to Kedron Brook for some long lead practice.

🐾 Bre had a 10 metre lead on but only got to use the full length when she was showing she was responding to her recall at a short distance.

🐾 Each time she responded and came back she earned a food reward and was allowed to do her thing again.

🐾 She was allowed to say hello to the other dogs around as long as she waited for her “say hello” cue.

🐾 Some dogs we walked by without engaging.

🐾 Part of her reward was being able to go into the water.

🐾 We mixed up space with walking on a shorter lead.

It was a great session and Bre showed me she has the capability of having a great recall. Now all we need is to get in the repetitions for it to be solid.

Don’t let this adorable face fool you! Behind it is a cheeky teenager 😜

Archie is a young dog who is struggling being away from his person. He has big feelings but only when she is still in the home.

We worked on ways to teach him that he can just chill and not have to be with his people all the time.

He struggles to know how to settle at times so ensuring he learns an off switch is also important.

He has a wonderful, dedicated family who are working hard to raise him to be a confident, happy dog.

I used to DIY all dog meals but at a point it felt very overwhelming so I shifted to premade raw (Big Dog)

Lately I’ve been considering going back to prepping meals again but instead of jumping all in I’m starting small. I’m doing smaller batches that take less time and using a variety of foods based on what I have at the time.

This batch will be added to the rotation of Big Dog and uses proteins that aren’t in Big Dog. This way I’m not feeling overwhelmed by making multiple batches of different proteins to ensure variety. I’m just adding to the variety Bre already gets.

The batch includes:
🐾 Emu
🐠 White fish
🐾 HUNDE Vital Blend - this is a meal balancer that makes DIY much easier!
🐑 Lamb kidney and liver - easily accessible at Coles
🎃 Cooked pumpkin
🐟 Sardines
🐓 Chicken feet

This batch took around 30 minutes to put together which is doable for me and made 10 meals. I’ll keep 2 days worth in the fridge and the rest will go into the freezer.

Bre will get one meal of Big Dog and one of this batch each day.

****NOTE - I am not a pet nutritionist and this mix is shared to provide you with ideas only. *****

I source the ingredients from a variety of places but most is through a bulk raw buyers group. There are a number of places around Brisbane where you can buy base ingredients though:

🐾 Beenleigh Pet Foods
🐾 Spot on Nutrition
🐾 Raw and Fresh
🐾 Instincto
🐾 Biggies Raw Pantry
🐾 Naturally Raw Per Store
🐾 Pet mince direct
🐾 Local produce stores like Redlands Produce

Are you a DIY maker? What was in your last batch of food?

I wanted to share one of Bre’s meals with you.

I’m a fresh food advocate and believe variety is a big part of that.

Here in one meal is a huge variety of foods with a variety of nutrients.
🐐Big Dog Pet Foods goat
🦆 Duck wing
🐟 Fresh sardines
🪶 Emu liver treats
🎃 Cooked pumpkin
⚪️ Greek yogurt

Of course you don’t need to feed all this in one meal. The Big Dog is complete and balanced on its own but adding extras adds texture and variety.

If you’ve not tried fresh food feeding you could pick one of the things in this meal and add to your dog’s meal. It doesn’t have to be hard, adding a small amount of fresh food each meal can have health benefits for your dog.

Next time you are cooking vegetables for yourself keep the skins/ends/scraps and cook them for your dog.(the pumpkin here is the inside and seeds, cooked and blended) Blend it up and add it to their dinner.

What have you added to your dog’s bowl recently?

New Greyhound Recall Class starting 26 May - https://fellowshipofthepawsbooking.as.me/schedule.php

These sell out pretty quickly so don't miss your spot!

Recall is one of the most sought after skills for most dog owners. For greyhounds, this can be even more challenging when you consider their inbuilt instinct and desire to chase. Their prey drive can kick in quickly and with their speed, there is no catching them!

Add to that their limited experience with engagement on lead and you can understand why people say greyhounds can’t recall.
But with consistency, understanding their motivations and lots of practice, you can teach your greyhound to recall to you.

This two week workshop has been developed to teach you how to have fun and communicate with your hound in a way that encourages them to recall to you every time.

Learn how to:
• Communicate with them through rewards and the lead
• Play games that introduce engagement and name recognition
• Set them up to succeed through consistency and management
• Introduce a long lead to their recall
• Manage your expectations when increasing distractions

This workshop is split over two weeks with a limit of 5 spots available to ensure everyone gets the help they need.
Cost: $89 per hound

Week 1
• Communication – introducing markers, cues and learning what motivates your hound
• Engagement – how to get their attention and respond to their name
• Lead handling – how to use it to better communicate and how to manage a long lead
• Play – find a way to play that your hound finds meaningful

Week 2
• Long lead – introduction to using a long lead successfully
• Adding distractions – set them up to succeed by understanding how to increase distractions gradually
• Group walk – walking around the school grounds and closer to the other hounds
• Recall finish – adding the finish position into your recall

It’s been tough in our home after losing Ash. We are all feeling his absence, Bre included.

She’s wanting to be in the same room with us more. She’s more restless at home, not settling in one spot as easily and wanting to be touching us more.

I can see Bre is a little more subdued on our walks, like she’s lost some confidence.

These things are normal. Dogs can grieve like we do so our job is to help them through.

First up we need to allow ourselves that time. Grief is experienced differently for everyone so take the time you need.

Second is finding out how to help your other dogs though the process.

🐾 try to keep their routine the same
🐾 encourage play to release endorphins
🐾 take walks in nature
🐾 support them when they need it

For Bre I am focussed on taking her to classes as usual and working hard at being in the moment with her. And at home giving her the affection she is looking for along with encouraging her to play as she usually would.

The next big change will be leaving Bre at home alone. She’s not used to it so we are starting slow with short periods. So far she’s ok.

We’ll find a new normal soon. But we’ll take our time to get there.

Ash 7.11.2018 - 24.4.2024 💔

Our hearts are a little bit broken today after saying goodbye to Ash.

We loved watching you grow from a young pup to an adult dog. You were cute and sassy and so happy!

Even with all your medical setbacks you took everything in your stride.

I wish we had more time together to do Noseworks, you were so easy to read and independent. And man you loved it!

We’ll remember all those adventures we went on, exploring new places together with a smile. You were happy to go anywhere with us but the beach was one of your faves.

I’m so glad we got to watch the sunrise with you this morning on your last day with us.

It’s funny how your pram broke just a couple days before we said goodbye. But we managed to keep it going enough for our sunrise walk today.

You are pain free now little guy. ❤️‍🩹

We will miss you xo
