Recall hasn’t been on the top of my priority list for Bre so far but this year it’s on our goal list.
We went for a trip to Kedron Brook for some long lead practice.
🐾 Bre had a 10 metre lead on but only got to use the full length when she was showing she was responding to her recall at a short distance.
🐾 Each time she responded and came back she earned a food reward and was allowed to do her thing again.
🐾 She was allowed to say hello to the other dogs around as long as she waited for her “say hello” cue.
🐾 Some dogs we walked by without engaging.
🐾 Part of her reward was being able to go into the water.
🐾 We mixed up space with walking on a shorter lead.
It was a great session and Bre showed me she has the capability of having a great recall. Now all we need is to get in the repetitions for it to be solid.

I used to DIY all dog meals but at a point it felt very overwhelming so I shifted to premade raw (Big Dog)
Lately I’ve been considering going back to prepping meals again but instead of jumping all in I’m starting small. I’m doing smaller batches that take less time and using a variety of foods based on what I have at the time.
This batch will be added to the rotation of Big Dog and uses proteins that aren’t in Big Dog. This way I’m not feeling overwhelmed by making multiple batches of different proteins to ensure variety. I’m just adding to the variety Bre already gets.
The batch includes:
🐾 Emu
🐠 White fish
🐾 HUNDE Vital Blend - this is a meal balancer that makes DIY much easier!
🐑 Lamb kidney and liver - easily accessible at Coles
🎃 Cooked pumpkin
🐟 Sardines
🐓 Chicken feet
This batch took around 30 minutes to put together which is doable for me and made 10 meals. I’ll keep 2 days worth in the fridge and the rest will go into the freezer.
Bre will get one meal of Big Dog and one of this batch each day.
****NOTE - I am not a pet nutritionist and this mix is shared to provide you with ideas only. *****
I source the ingredients from a variety of places but most is through a bulk raw buyers group. There are a number of places around Brisbane where you can buy base ingredients though:
🐾 Beenleigh Pet Foods
🐾 Spot on Nutrition
🐾 Raw and Fresh
🐾 Instincto
🐾 Biggies Raw Pantry
🐾 Naturally Raw Per Store
🐾 Pet mince direct
🐾 Local produce stores like Redlands Produce
Are you a DIY maker? What was in your last batch of food?

Have you ever played hide and seek with your dog? I decided to see how Bre responded to me quietly hiding….. she looked a little panicked! ❤️ ……….. #dogsofaustralia #greyhoundsofbrisbane #dogs #greyhoundsaspets #greyhoundsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram
If your dog likes to chew and destroy things then give them something else to destroy! Bre likes nothing more than shredding the junk mail piece by piece. #greyhoundsofinstagram #greyhoundlove #dogtrainingtips
Snooby update
This young boy is going really well with his lead walking and reactivity.
He’s now earning more and more freedom with a long lead to allow him to just be a dog, instead of being restricted to a shorter lead.
We’ve introduced the flirt pole to give him an outlet for natural instincts to chase and catch. The he gets to celebrate his win 🥇
Here is a 1 minute snippet of our 45 minute walk & train. We also practiced basics like drop stay, heel, sit stay and impulse control.
It’s so important to give our dogs the ability to be dog and find what motivates them.

Our Greyhound tricks class have been having a ball learning new skills.
They’ve started with spin/twirl, boop and leg weave which will all come together into a fun routine at the end of the course.
I can’t wait to see how far they progress 😁
For now, have a peek 👀 at what they’ve been up to.

Do you find yourself saying “my dog knows this at home!” and feeling embarrassed when they don’t follow cues in the environment?
Practicing known skills in many environments and settings is called proofing behaviour. It’s the part most people miss in their training but is crucial to ensuring your dog understands what you want.
Here is a perfect example of how the smallest changes to the “set up” can change how a dog responds to a known cue.
Bre knows the heel position, but I noticed on walks she would look like she ignored the cue. When I stopped to think about it I realised that the “set up”’was different.
When the pram is in the path, facing in our walking direction her heel is on point.
When the pram is facing towards the grass or road (not our walking path) Bre hesitates with finding the position.
Then when I am standing on the grass with the pram on the path, Bre again hesitates finding the position.
These moments are not Bre ignoring me, these are moments of confusion for her because the set up is different.
So what did I do? I went back a step and either used the lead to guide her or use the food lure to show her what I wanted.
After each repetition she’ll get better and it will become “normal” and until then I will help her when needed.
So the next time your dog “ignores” your cue, stop and ask yourself if they really do understand what you want. Have you practiced in this environment before? Are you standing in a different position? Does the set in look different?
If any of those questions apply then take a step back in training and guide them through this new challenge.
Each new “set up” will need less and less guidance and will be worth it in the end.
What

Door manners or boundary games are so important to teach your dog.
Here are a few benefits:
✅ Safety - you don’t have to worry about your dog running out onto the road
✅ Convenience - makes coming and going easy knowing you don’t have to wrangle your dog just to check the mail!
✅ Impulse control - it’s a must have skill for all dogs
✅ Walking manners - loose lead walking starts before you even leave the house! If your dog can be calm at the door it can set the scene for your walk
If you want to be able to do this, here are my tips to get started:
🐾 Practice at random times of the day, not just when you are heading for a walk
🐾 Utilise the lead to help block them running out
🐾 Lower your criteria at the start. Don’t expect them to stay if they have always been able to drag you out the door.
🐾 Break it down to small steps. EG be able to take one step to the door, then touch the handle, then open the door.
🐾 Repeat the process at ALL exit points around your home
🐾 Practice, practice, practice!
How is your dog around open doors?

Bre got the zoomies while we were at training. She didn’t go far but had a blast! #dogsofaustralia #greyhoundsofbrisbane #dogs #greyhoundsaspets #greyhoundsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram
Our Nose at the Ready Class are having a blast learning to hone their searching skills.
Seeing confidence grow has been a pleasure even after just 2 lessons!
Tiny Tina the greyhound was unsure of her job week one. Then week two rolls around and she is happy to do the work with less guidance.
Then young Frankie the cocker spaniel is learning how to stay on task better. Week one was exploring the whole area and week two was more commitment to searching.
Scent games are such a great way to give your dog a job that taps into their natural instincts.
Send us a message if you’d like to join in the next class.

Setting up a nosework game at home is easy! Grab boxes and containers, lay them out and add food to them. Once your dog understands the game, use less treats to make them work harder to find the food. #dogsofaustralia #greyhoundsofbrisbane #dogs #greyhoundsaspets #greyhoundsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram #dogsofaustralia #greyhoundsofbrisbane #dogs #greyhoundsaspets #greyhoundsofinstagram #dogsofinstagram #diysniffgames #dogenrichment
