Have you got a tabby? 😻

Today is National Tabby Day! 😻

Here are some fun facts about tabby cats.....

Tabby is a coat pattern and there are five different types:

🐈Classic
🐈Mackerel
🐈Spotted
🐈Ticket
🐈Patched

😺Tabby cats can be a range of different colours, including brown/black, orange, black and grey. The tabby coat patter pattern is also present in many different breeds of cat.

😺Tabby cats have a characteristic 'M' mark on their heads.

😺The domestic cat's ancestors Felis sylvestris lybica were tabby, so they are the original domestic cat!

😺Cats with the tabby coat pattern are particularly well camouflaged when hunting, making them effective predators.

What's your tabby cat's name and what's his or her personality like? Let's see your tabby kitties! 😻

Ever wondered why some cats have a loose pouch of skin under their tummy that moves around when they walk? 🤔

Well, this is known as the 'primordial pouch' and is thought to serve a couple functions:

🐱 To protect their organs during fighting. When cats fight, they really go for it! They will often try to rake their opponents abdomen with their sharp back claws, so the primordial pouch protects this area from serious damage.

🐱Because the primordial pouch is made up from excess skin, it helps cats to stretch out when they are running, jumping or climbing. This is important for both hunting and defence.

🐱The primordial pouch starts to develop when a cat is around six months of age. It has nothing to do with neutering and is a completely normal part of the feline anatomy. Both entire and neutered cats may have a primordial pouch.

🐱Some big cats, such as tigers and cheetahs also have primordial pouches

🐱Sizes in primordial pouches vary - it doesn't mean your cat is overweight if it has a obvious primordial pouch, but it can do. If your cat is overweight you should speak to your veterinary team for advice.

Did you know there are over 100 different cat breeds? If you have a cat, what breed do you have?

This is Mama, she is also known as Meemaw or Moomami 😂 she is a domestic short hair and her colour is dilute tortoiseshell.

Tortoiseshell cats are renowned to be naughty, hence the term "naughty tortie" and this little monster definitely lives up to that stereotype! She loves chewing cardboard into tiny little pieces, doing zoomies at inappropriate times, beating up her housemates and occasionally pees in the sink!

Share a story about your cat and it's personality ☺️

My Story

I’m Codie Joy and I’m a veterinary nurse. I have been surrounded by animals my whole life and have been studying them for many years. I hold a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services and have completed multiple short courses for animal behaviour, health and nutrition. I have also worked with unusual animals which has given me the opportunity to experience different scenarios with some of our local wildlife. I have cared for joey kangaroos, native Australian birds such as owls, lorikeets and galahs, as well as handling reptiles such as snakes, lizards and frogs! I have a very keen interest in exotic animals and reptiles. In addition to my professional experience, I have owned many pets throughout my lifetime and currently own a diverse range of animals. Feel free to ask me about them, I love to share photos and stories of all my pets! Due to my extensive experience and knowledge, I can assure you that your pet will receive the best of care and love while you are away.

Working with animals is something I am very passionate about and it is something I plan on doing for the rest of my life!
