Looks like Bird's and Ellie's kids have overstayed their welcome, time to move them off into another aviary... "Bird's" got a bit more territorial the last couple of days (which is a sign he's getting ready to breed again) and has nipped the toe/toe nail of one of his offspring from last season...
Before & after photos of yesterday's Baffle Cage. Filled with golden cane fronds and a few almonds, these guys couldn't wait to get stuck into it. Normally I bring the baffle cages out already filled, but I was a bit pressed for time yesterday and prepared them whilst in the aviary with the macaws watching on. I think them seeing what was coming worked them up into a bit of a frenzy 😆

Foraging time! Seagrass mats make a great way to hide treats and get the birds thinking out how to pull treats through... Of course the parents are use to it but their chicks are experiencing this for the first time today and are loving it!
Haven't posted for a little bit so I took a couple of photos of the Hahn's Macaw chicks all grown up.. Just a few more weeks and then off to the vets to be s*xed and chipped.
A couple more chicks venturing out of the nestbox to explore their new world.
First of Bird & Ellie's chicks have ventured out of the nest. They picked the worse day for it though with so much rain and localised flooding in our area.

Just a little progress update on the chicks at Brisbane Birds. Happy to report that all 7 chicks are growing well with no issues. Bird & Ellie's 4 chicks are doing well and the oldest chick has started getting some pin feathers. Gizmo & Holly's 3 chicks are just starting to open their eyes to the world around them.
Perfection! 7 from 7 eggs hatched. Gizmo & Holly's last egg has hatched on time and Bird & Ellie's awesome foursome are growing fast.

4 from 4! The last of Bird and Ellie's eggs have hatched today. And it looks like the first of Gizmo and Holly's eggs has just started hatching.

Holly has laid her third and most likely last egg for this clutch. She was keeping a very close eye on me taking the photo as you can see. She's always laid 3 so I'm not expecting anymore. Now we sit back and wait for 24 or so days until all the action begins!

Surprise! Bird & Ellie have laid their fourth egg overnight. Last time this pair hatched and raise 4 lovely chicks from 4 eggs, hopefully they can do that again.

Ellie has laid her third egg! Now normally she would start sitting on them incubating but she has surprised me before by laying a fourth egg. In other exciting news, it looks like holly is about to pop so she may well be about to lay her first egg for the season!
Bird and Ellie are up to two eggs and right on queue. Last season they laid 4 and successfully hatched/raised 4 awesome chicks... How many will it be this time?
Bird & Ellie have started laying for the season... With the exception of one year, these guys always start laying late Oct or Nov so it's good to see they have finally started.

5x Hahn's Macaws at Brisbane Bird Vet getting surgically s*xed, microchipped, stainless steel leg bands and health assessed ready for new homes! We always get our birds surgically s*xed, this allows the vet to visually check the birds s*x organs for deformities and disease. At the same time we have them microchipped and stainless steel leg bands put on to help them get returned to their owner should they ever get lost. All very important aspects when looking to add new birds to your flock!
Parent raised Hahn's Macaws ready for new homes soon! Next week these guys are heading over to the Avian Vet where they will be surgically s*xed, health checked, microchip and have legbands put on.
Short of removing the nest boxes completely I've tried to stop these finches breeding in the holding aviaries. I've been somewhat successful by breeding far fewer this year with smaller clutch sizes of only 3 sometime 4 chicks, but that may have prolonged the season with chicks still hatching yesterday and chicks about to fledge today from a different nest.
Just out on an afternoon walk and came past the local Galah flock with a couple of Corellas as a bonus. Foraging on the ground is something they don't get much of an opportunity to do when housed in suspended cages which is why all my birds are in conventional aviaries with a small suspended section at the end. 😉

Only 23 days after the first egg was laid... Probably a little earlier than expected given she laid 4 eggs. Normally once the hen starts incubating it's 24 days later but because we've had a lot of hot weather in the last few weeks the eggs obviously started developing quickly from day one! #hahnsmacaws #macawchicks #macawsaustralia #macaws #brisbane

It doesn't take too much work to get aviary bred birds to be calm and interactive. These parent reared birds are about 2 weeks out of the nest, all taking some treats from my hand, nice calm aviary birds. Having a teacher bird (in this case their parents) helps speed up the process as well but the key thing is spending time in the aviary with the birds using some basic positive reinforcement. These birds I have spent about 10mins whilst doing the morning food run in the aviary with them for the past week to get them to this point. #hahns #hahnsmacaws #aviculture
