Newcastle Spiny Leaf Insects Spiny Leaf Insects are the coolest pets ever, and are great for schools, children and people who nee Females live for 18 months. Plus, they don't smell.

Spiny Leaf Insects are the coolest pets ever, and are great for schools, children and people who need easy, cheap but definitely interesting pets. They are extremely easy to look after and breed efficiently. People young and old love them (they make great temporary jewellery!). Watch them grow, from tiny nymphs all the way to fully grown adults. They are easy to transport and can be left alone for

nearly a week. Definitley worth the (tiny) investment! Wide variety of ages, all are females (reproduce using parthenogenesis). From $4 each! Pet shops sell them for $15+ each! I additionally have eggs for sale, 10 for $5. (As not all insects will hatch and survive, 10 is a safe number for approximately 5-7 healthy insects). Pick up only in Newcastle (Stockton). Please email [email protected] for inquiries. Recomended website: http://australianmuseum.net.au/care-of-stick-insects for information on cage sizes and how to correctly care for your special bugs. In summary, they require fresh eucalyptus leaves 1-2 times a week and a light spraying of water every day. The tank does not need to be large. Find a balance. I would recommend a portable plastic fish tank for up to approximately 5 insects, more than that, you may need to either buy or make a more specialised cage. After you have collected the leaves (there are a few other types of leaves they will eat, other than eucalyptus) wash them thoroughly with water (pesticides and urban pollution). Then place the leaves in the enclosure, and close the lid carefully, without getting any tiny feet stuck (sticky tape is another issue with this). Spray the leaves every afternoon/evening lightly, with water from a spray bottle. As babies, they run around a lot, whereas as adults, they are particualry slow and sleepy. They are also nocturnal, thus they are more likely to move around at night, munching on leaves. It is not a problem at all if small children play with and hold the insects, though if scared, they may drop down and play 'dead'. And I mean the insects, not the children :)
The insects will always search upwards looking for leaves, thus if they escape, look along the walls and roof. I hope this is enough information to help you on your new adventure, and remember to look at the website for any more intricate details. Please email me with any questions or concerns!
