Did you know pets need blood too?
Today is #WorldBloodDonorDay, typically a day dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of blood donations for humans. But did you know pets need blood too?
While it's not a well-known fact, pet blood donations are critical in our hospitals and can often mean the difference between life and death.
With the growing number of pet emergencies our hospitals are seeing, our pet blood supplies are quickly draining leaving us in urgent need of more doggy donors. We have even had to rely on the pets from some of our own vets when they are eligible to donate (there are criteria around how often they are able to donate) for the important gift of blood.
Join us at one of our hospitals to give the gift of life to another furry friend. Give some blood, to help a bud.

Has your dog been vaccinated?
Has your dog been vaccinated?
Parvovirus is a highly infectious and deadly virus with nearly half of the cases reported in Australia each year resulting in death. Sadly, it is young pups who are most at risk, but we see dogs of all ages present to our hospitals suffering from the disease.
Did you know that canine parvovirus can survive in the ground and soil for up to 9 years? The virus is passed through the faeces of infected dogs; however, it can remain in the ground of parks and gardens well after the stool has gone. Please be cautious when taking your pup out and about and remember that prevention is always better than cure!
Signs of parvovirus infection appear within 3 to 7 days after being exposed, and include high fever, lethargy, weakness, loss of appetite, vomiting, blood in the faeces and/or diarrhoea, severe dehydration and shock. If you suspect your dog has parvovirus, visit your vet immediately.

(Please note, we don’t offer a routine vaccination service. Contact your local vet for vaccinations and further advice.)

Cat bites off more than she can chew!
Our Top Tips for Surviving the Festive Season as a Pet Owner
Tip 1 – Toys & Ornaments.
Cats love shiny objects, and tinsel has a particular fascination for them. This little kitty decided to bite off more than she could chew when she swallowed 1.6 metres of tinsel! Fortunately, her quick-thinking owners rushed her to us where we were able to safely remove all of it from her stomach.
This time of year, Christmas tree ornaments, bows/ribbons, tinsel, string/cooking twine, batteries, and kid toys are the most commonly ingested items by cats and puppies, so make sure they are kept out of reach in case they are accidentally swallowed.

Meet Franki
Meet Franki! ❤️ 🐾
Franki was rushed to our Gold Coast hospital after his paw parents found that he couldn’t walk on his front legs. Upon examination Franki was found to have severe neck pain and couldn’t use his front legs. Recognising the symptoms, our attending emergency vet was highly suspicious of a cervical (spinal) issue, and a specialist surgeon was call on for imaging where the suspicions were confirmed. Franki underwent surgery and had extensive physiotherapy in hospital while in recovery.
Franki was a very good patient for his physiotherapy. See some of Franki’s physio with Nurse Victoria and Nurse Felicity.
