Easter Closure

This poor bird was struggling badly and nearly lost his life. He came into care with multiple issues including bacterial and yeast infections and worms growing in his mouth. After months of treatment by the team at Australia Zoo and wildlife carers, he has now turned the corner and will go to the wild. He is however, one of the lucky ones.
The reason he was so unwell with lots of secondary problems was he was suffering with an underlying condition called metabolic bone disease. Metabolic bone disease in birds results in painful degenerative changes in the bones that result from nutritional imbalance and deficiencies.
Imbalances of calcium, phosphorus, and Vitamin D3 can lead to soft or brittle beaks, claws and keel, bone fractures and enlarged parathyroid glands.
If you talk to bird carers, and avian vets they will tell you that this is one of the biggest causes of euthanasia of black and white baby birds that come into care.
What makes this so heartbreaking is that in many instances the reason for MBD is entirely preventable because it is due to humans feeding these birds or the birds parents when the bird is still in nest. If you are feeding mince, bread, seed, sausage, chicken or pet food to wild birds you may well be part of the problem.
Human food is not natural for magpies and can make them sick. A natural diet for these birds consists of insects and small animals.
We often hear I love my local maggies and feed them regularly. If you truly care then don’t feed them regularly and don’t feed them human foods.
**** If you really want to help then a compost heap or worm farm can augment the natural food supply during these dry times and still bring these magnificent birds as visitors to your yard******

Christmas Closure Dates
Last delivery day will be Friday December 22nd and I’ll be back on the road on Monday January 8th. 2024.
Orders for delivery before Christmas would need to be received by Monday December 18th.
Orders for delivery from week commencing January 8th may be placed during the closure period.

Miss Kitty and I are going away again…..
I am taking some time off from Thursday September 28th to Monday October 2nd (inclusive) to go away with my pony again and will not be doing deliveries during that time.
It should not affect delivery times except that delivery may be pushed out to the 5th day.

I am really sorry but there has been a very large price increase on the Wildbird No Oats 20kg bags 😔
I out-source the mixing of this product now (it became too much for me physically) and it appears that they have overlooked keeping pricing current for a little while.

❌COLIC WARNING ❌
We are seeing more than the usual amount of colics recently, possibly due to the cool, changing weather.
REMEMBER!
Make sure your horse always has access to water and ensure troughs and buckets are cleaned regularly.
Sudden drops in temperature can cause horses to stop drinking as much, and this leads to large colon impactions. If you think your horse may be drinking less then there are a few things to try:
• Adding extra water to feeds
• Wetting the hay
• Giving a bucket of flavoured water (e.g. with molasses, electrolytes or cordial) in addition to their normal water
New feeds should be introduced slowly. Even new hay should be introduced gradually, especially if it is a different batch, new season or different grass type.
Make sure your horse is up to date with oral exams. Sharp or painful teeth may cause your horse to not chew as well and may lead to large colon impactions.
Any signs that a horse could be suffering from colic, such as: reduced number of droppings, flank watching, pawing, laying down or rolling needs a veterinary examination.

*** 4/4/23: I have made a whoopsie. Change of dates - no deliveries through to Friday April 14th. Back on the road on Monday April 17th.
It is that time of year again - Kitty and I are having another competition holiday for a week!!
Deliveries will not occur on Thursday April 6th (nor the public holidays and Easter weekend, as per usual) through to Thursday April 13th. Back on the road on Friday April 14th.
The 3 - 5 business day lead time on deliveries shouldn't be affected greatly but some orders may end up being on the 5th day depending on when they are received.
To ensure supply of an order, or if needed prior to Easter please submit it ASAP - preferably by Wednesday this week.

This is embarrasing to write, I feel like I've failed, but if it can avoid the situation for someone else then it's worthwhile doing!
My pony, Miss Kitty Kat has mild laminitis....
Yes it's a bad year and yes, from all accounts talking to reputable sources, there are a lot of first-time cases that are already at the point of no return, but, it is a reflection of poor management which I have to take responsibility for.
Yes I am well informed and I do have (always have) processes in place with Kitty as she has been prone to it in the past - but, my one downfall which I believe has led to her current disposition, was being a little slack in keeping her in the same rate of work as what I had her in leading up to our recent competition in NSW.
If you have ponies and you're unsure about Laminitis - Google it or PM me.
The main point of this post is to remind everyone be VERY VIGILANT!!!!

I am having a holiday!! Well.....I am going away with my pony to a competition again......
Just giving notice that I will be taking the week off just prior, including and after the Easter w/end.
It may affect the delivery times of orders depending on when they are received. Deliveries will not occur on Thurs 14th April prior to Easter, or Tues 19th, Wed 20th and Thurs 21st April after Easter. This also includes the public holidays and weekends when deliveries do not occur anyway.
To ensure supply of an order prior to Easter please have your order placed by Wednesday April 6th - THIS Wednesday. After Wednesday it will be subject to stock availability until after Easter.
