Sounds great, right? Who wouldn’t want dog training to be force-free?

So when a recent client asked if I was a force-free trainer, they were surprised when I said, no.

The truth is, I have a few issues with that label—starting with the fact that it doesn’t actually tell you what I do. Instead, it focuses on what I don’t do, which is one of the oldest marketing tricks in the book. It’s like a restaurant advertising “Guilt-Free Dessert!”—but when you check the ingredients, it’s still packed with sugar. The label might sound nice, but it doesn’t tell the full story.

The force-free movement would have you believe that a trainer is "bad" if they use an e-collar and "good" if they use a clicker and treats. But dog training isn’t that black and white.

Every dog is different. Every situation is different. My job isn’t to fit into a label—it’s to meet each dog where they’re at and modify my approach to set them up for success.

I’m not force-free. I’m fair. I’m kind. I’m respectful. I use the least invasive, minimally aversive approach. I prioritize reward-based methods. And, most importantly, I help dogs and their owners live better lives together.

Sounds great, right? Who wouldn’t want dog training to be force-free?

So when a recent client asked if I was a force-free trainer, they were surprised when I said, no.

😳 Meet Doug.

Doug is a good boy who’s had a rough experience. After being attacked by an off-leash dog, he’s been on high alert during his walks—understandably. His instincts now tell him to protect himself before anything bad can happen again.

On one of his walks, Doug managed to slip out of his harness and went after a smaller dog. Thankfully, no one was hurt—but it was a wake-up call.

Here’s the thing:
😰 Harnesses are not escape-proof.
When a dog is reactive or fearful, the risk of them slipping out increases. And once they’re loose, the situation can become dangerous in a matter of seconds—for them and others.

That’s why I’m a big believer in slip leads for dogs that need more support and safety on walks.
Slip leads are secure, effective, and quick to use—which is exactly why shelters and pounds rely on them every day. When used correctly, they’re a great tool for training, communication, and, most importantly, keeping your dog safe.

Every dog deserves to feel secure. And every owner deserves tools that help them support their dog’s journey.

🌿AႦႦҽყ: Sniffy walk & Recall. Abbey's owner broke her foot, so Abbey deserves some energy draining. Sniffy walks & Recall training is hard work.

🧀Cԋҽԃԃαɾ: Recall, loose leash walking, starting spin & twist. Focusing mainly on loose leash walking. Which is hard when you're a puppy.

🍁Bɾυɳσ: Recall into heel & reactivity. We followed off leash dogs, which really triggers Bruno.

But if it means Albus gets to be part of the adventure and live his best life, then I’m more than happy to look a bit ridiculous.

He adores my friends—how could I leave him at home?
And leaving him on the ground, out in the open, just isn't worth the risk. Sadly, not everyone is responsible with their dogs, and I don't trust the general public to keep him safe.

So into the pram he goes. Happy, included, and safe.

🌳 A Beautiful Walk at Pipemakers Park

Nothing beats a peaceful stroll with good company, and today was just that!

Minnie, Greyson, Marley, Jupiter, and Albus enjoyed a lovely walk alongside some truly wonderful ladies. Watching the dogs explore, take in the scents, and move together in harmony was such a joy.

Pipemakers Park gave us the perfect mix of nature, fresh air, and a chance to just slow down and enjoy the moment. These walks are more than just exercise—they’re about connection, trust, and simply appreciating time with our dogs and each other.

Feeling grateful for moments like this and the people (and pups) who make them so special!

🐾 Building Confidence in New Environments: Ember’s Training Update Exposure to new places is a key part of training, especially for dogs who struggle with impulse control. Over the past two sessions at Hoppers Crossing Train Station, Ember has been working on improving her loose leash walking and settling in a busy environment. 🐾 Session One: Ember initially pulled excessively on a flat collar, so I switched to a Biothane slip leash to guide her into a more balanced walk. We ended the session practicing a sustained drop position at the station entrance, helping her build patience and relaxation in a high-distraction setting. 🐾 Session Two: We continued reinforcing loose leash walking and impulse control. In the station, we worked on people-watching from a calm drop position—progress from last week, where she wanted to lunge and greet everyone. Unfortunately, Ember experienced car sickness after both outings. To help with this, I’d recommend incorporating short, frequent car trips into her routine to build her tolerance over time. Training isn’t just about obedience—it’s about helping dogs navigate the world with confidence! #DogTraining #LeashManners #ImpulseControl #ConfidentCanines #TrainingInPublic
