⛈️Caring for Stray Animals During Stormy Weather! ⛈️

With the upcoming storm season, we understand that more stray animals may be found.

While we love helping our community, please remember that taking in strays can put additional pressure on our Emergency and Critical Care team and increase stress for our sick and recovering patients.

Here’s What to Do If You Find a Stray to reduce the stress on our emergency vet services.

1. Secure the Animal– Offer water and keep it safe, calm and separate from other pets.

2. Search for the Owner– Knock on nearby doors (if safe) and post in local Facebook groups like Townsville Lost and Found Pets, Save a Stray Townsville.

3. Contact Townsville City Council– Call 13 48 10 to arrange collection. Their Animal Care Centre is open daily (except Sundays & public holidays) from 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM and offers a home collection service.

If the Animal Is Injured– Take it to your regular vet. If closed, call JCUVet on 07 4781 3600 before coming in or if you have any questions.
JCUVet can also check for microchips but it may come to a point where we reach capacity for healthy strays.

Thank you for caring for our community’s animals—stay safe and take care!

We'd like to clarify that the information shared in our recent post about foods for dogs was sourced from a veterinary site. We have never claimed to be vets. The key takeaway is: if you're unsure whether a human food is safe for your dog, please consult a vet.

Our intention was never to cause harm or upset anyone. We sincerely apologize for any confusion. Thank you for understanding. 🐾❤️

Watch what your dog munches on, every time! 🐾

Just because - the bench was there, so why not ☺️ ☀️🌴

We went for a walk this afternoon and did some doggy stuff, showing people what well trained, well behaved dogs look like in public - with lots of distractions.💯✅💪👏

Dingoes are intelligent and resourceful, as well as extremely resilient and adaptable to new situations and environmental conditions.

They are well equipped with tools typical of an efficient predator physically suited to taking down prey larger than themselves, with a large strong jaw, large canines and flexible joints.
With keen senses and an efficient gait for both high speed and long distance travel, they are generalists able to survive on practically any food source ranging from berries and insects to large kangaroos.

Availability of prey species, water and environmental conditions influence the Dingoes hunting strategies, with the type and abundance of prey determining the size of hunting groups. Mostly Dingoes are solitary hunters, preying on smaller marsupials such as wallabies and bandicoots, as well as rodents and rabbits.

Cats and foxes, which are not native to this country are suppressed.
Dingoes are so very necessary for our ecosystems, I would hate to see what would happen without them‼️

However, one of the Dingoes most compelling traits is its highly evolved social behaviour.
In most cases, Dingoes live in structured family groups within defined territories.
All members help to raise the young, teaching and reinforcing social and hunting behaviour whilst defending and maintaining their territory against other Dingoes, feral dogs and smaller predators....

Don't forget that the Dingo was and is also a favourite companion amongst First Nations people. It was a protector, a keen hunter and also warned them against evil powers. Some people loved their Dingoes so much that they were often buried with their owners to protect them even after death. 🐾🐾

Needed a new hat, well the choice was easy.😂True though.☺️Thanks to

I am of the opinion that a dog trainer should always continue to learn about all things Canine, so when looking for a 2025 calendar, the choice was easy 😅
You never know, I might be pleasantly surprised.😎

An Important reminder for anyone going to visit K'gari that as Christmas approaches so too do the hoards of tourists - the Dingoes again will be watched closely - Please be Dingo aware and do not put them at risk for possible death.... Don't feed them,.... Don't run and keep children close and supervised at all times.
Please Don't encourage any interaction for that all important selfie.🐾🐾

Just a snapshot of Bindi, the young Australian Shepherd's second session at Riverway, 4th session overall.
Proofing basic commands like "sit" and "down" with the handler in different positions and using voice only.
Then checked area of influence by putting dog on a 5mtr lead - again using voice only.
Finished with a little bit of "ghost handling", which was a first for both dog and handler.

💣You don't have to train your 🐕 dog all the time - just hang out and chill some times.🐾
💣And play - don't forget to play - have fun - take some time to appreciate that wonderful animal, this opportunistic predator, who somehow ended up in your life.😊
