Clontarf Veterinary Practice Vetwell uniquely operates as a collective of veterinarians practicing at a small number of locations This practice has existed for many years.

Clontarf joined the Vetwell group when we bought the practice on April 22nd 2002. As the Peninsula has grown and become gentrified, our little practice has changed dramatically. We moved to our current location on February 3rd 2013 and began an extensive program of updating all the services offered and now have a modern functioning veterinary facility with everything your pet could need. To accomp

lish this we fitted out our new tenancy as a purpose-built veterinary clinic with multiple consulting rooms, ultrasound and digital radiology rooms, pharmacy, separate animal wards, office, procedures area and a dedicated surgery along with all the support facilities (laundry etc). With these changes we have replaced old equipment, bought new equipment, added new services and we now have four veterinarians who share the work at our practice. We maintain a very close relationship with the North Lakes Veterinary Hospital where some of our veterinarians also work.

It’s that time of year again when it’s starting to cool down. And that time of year where we see a lot of animals suffering from osteoarthritis!
Arthritis is one of the most common diseases we diagnose in our patients. It is something that our pets are so good at hiding, and often isn’t picked up by owners until they start showing obvious symptoms such as limping, which is often when the arthritis is at a more severe stage. More subtle signs include not lasting as long on walks, reluctance or difficulty jumping, difficulty or slow to rise after resting/sleeping or even some patients won’t show symptoms at all, especially cats! The earlier arthritis is diagnosed, the easier it is managed and treated, which is why it is so important to pick it up earlier rather than later.
Luckily in veterinary medicine, we have access to some very successful medications and nutraceuticals to both treat and manage arthritis, including a new groundbreaking monthly pain relief injection that has just been released in Australia.
If you think your pet may be showing signs of arthritis, or if you have a pet who isn’t showing signs but you want our vet to check for any early arthritis for earlier detection and management, give us a call on 073284 4262!

Just a reminder that tick season is in full swing and now more than ever it’s important to make sure your pet is on a tick preventative. There is a national shortage of tick antiserum (used to treat animals showing symptoms) in Australia at the moment due to usual weather patterns. Symptoms to look out for include a loss or change in ‘voice’ (meow/bark), weakness or paralysis generally starting at the hind legs, drooling, regurgitation and can lead to death if untreated.
Please contact your local vets to check if your pet is on prevention.

⚠️🚨NO TICK ANTISERUM 🚨⚠️
Australia is having a shortage of tick antiserum!
Please make sure your pet is on regular tick prevention.
Please contact your local vet to discuss tick prevention to keep our furry friends safe.

⚠️LOW TO NO tick antiserum Australia wide

This means if your furry family member gets a tick and isn’t on a preventive it will now be even more difficult for your vet to currently treat.

The best thing we can do for our pets to avoid even needing to see a vet for treatment due to tick envenomation is to make sure they are on a well-rounded preventative and to triple check your current preventive NOW to make sure it also covers paralysis ticks!

Steps to follow to keep your loved fur-members safer and to avoid seeing a vet due to tick envenomation include:

• Providing your pet with a preventative
• Ensuring preventatives are taken as frequently as the box recommends
• Set a calendar reminder for when preventatives are due
• Checking your pet DAILY for ticks
• Keeping your grass short

Unfortunately, we are seeing high numbers of tick cases this year, but the good news is there are easy at home steps you can take to keep your pets from experiencing life-threating tick envenomation. We are so lucky to have tick prevention products available for our pets so it’s important we are giving this to them.

Even with the treatment shortages, there are still ways we can help your pets. If you find a tick on your fur-member the safest thing to do is contact your vet. If they are on a preventative and you are worried please still call your vet 🐾💜🩺

Ever heard of a singleton pup?
Meet Nina and her beautiful singleton puppy “Wolfie”. Nina is a gorgeous young GSD owned by the wonderful Alyssa, who was accidentally mated by Alyssa’s other male German Shepherd (whoops!). Nina ended up only having one puppy, called a singleton puppy. Singleton puppies often cause issues at time of labour due to failure of the normal hormonal events of labour (e.g. not going into labour at all or may not lactate) commonly leading to dystocia (difficult birthing) or death of the puppy. They are often very large as well, which means they can have difficulty fitting through the pelvic cavity. Luckily we realized that Nina’s puppy was a singleton via an x-ray, and after Alyssa reported Nina had some vaginal discharge around her due date, we got her in as we were concerned she may be not showing the usual labour signs (sometimes all they will show is vaginal discharge). After discussion, we made the decision to refer to the amazing Queensland Veterinary Specialists for an emergency caesarian with their reproduction team, and luckily Wolfie was born alive via C-section with no issues!
This outlines the importance of finding out how many puppies there are going to be prior to labour. X-rays are often done around day 50 from mating to check how many puppies there are going to be. Ultrasounds are done from day 30 to confirm if pregnancy was successful or not.
We are so happy that everything went okay with Nina and Wolfie, and can’t wait to watch Wolfie grow!
