Today is Take Your Dog to Work Day (June 21) and we are thrilled to officially launch CANA's Pets in Business program to help employers set up pet-friendly policies that meet the needs of the business, non-pet owners and pet-owning staff.

We are proud of our Pets in Business partnership with Eastern Innovation in Melbourne who support their clients with pets by providing spaces for their animal and guidelines for the centre. Read more how partnering with CANA has provided Eastern Innovation the foundation to ensure that pets can be invited into the workplace knowing their owners understood the requirements while being considerate to clients who do not want pets.

CANA’s Pets in Business program provides FREE resources to support the workplace, such as Pet Resume, Pet Friendly Workplace and Pet Free Zone Posters, Rules for Pets and Humans, and Office Pet Roster. Did you know we are looking to raise $20,000? That’s just an extra $6 per animal we rescue, treat, and rehome!

Your support is crucial! As 2024 has already presented significant challenges with slowing adoption rates, increasing animal relinquishments, and fewer foster homes available due to the rental and economic crisis, SAFE Inc. needs your help more than ever.

Every animal we rehome costs more than we earn through adoption fees.
Please consider donating before June 30th, 2024, and receive a tax-deductible receipt for all donations over $2. Your contribution will help us continue our life-saving work and ensure that every stray in WA gets a second chance.

Maz Compton, lively Breakfast Host on Triple M Central Coast (NSW), enjoys working in Triple M's pet friendly office and brings along her furry sidekick, Happy.

"My son Henry came up with the name Happy when we asked what he would name a dog if we got one," says Maz.
"We adopted Happy after my dad passed away, so he’s been a bit of a grief dog for me. Happy is almost 2 years old now and loves his daily walks with Mum (me). We also have four chickens that Happy loves rounding up in the yard. He loves Greek yoghurt, licky-mats as a treat and running free at the off-lead beach near our house. He is super social, although he has a strong dislike for our postman!"

Having Happy at work brings a smile to everyone’s face!

"Happy gets lots of pats and attention which he loves, and he gets to hang out with me during the day!" says Maz. "I absolutely love it when any one of my colleagues brings their pet in to work. Of course, you need to be mindful that it is a good fit, the environment and the pup, to ensure that it’s a positive experience for all involved."

Alexandra Bray is a self-proclaimed dog-obsessed individual and working with Dogs' Homes of Tasmania as the marketing and development manager probably shows that!

Peanut is her six-month-old long-haired Miniature Dachshund who comes to work with her three days a week, spreading joy and happiness in the workplace. Being at the office has also helped Peanut with his socialisation with people and the occasional puppies that come by.

"Not every dog enjoys an office environment, but for those that do, it’s incredibly rewarding to have your best friend with you each day,” says Alexandra.

Is your office pet friendly?

Now more than ever, pets are an integral part of our lives! With many companies continuing to have employees split their working week between home and the office, it’s no surprise people want to bring their pets to the workplace too.

Education, clear guidelines and fair ground rules can help make pets in the office work well for everyone. You need to make sure everyone feels safe (including the pets), that you can avoid any chaos by providing strict rules and boundaries, and that there is always supervision for the pets.

Here are 8 tips for creating a harmonious, pet-friendly work environment.

In the lead up to Take Your Dog to Work Day on Friday, June 21, leading national animal welfare charity Companion Animal Network Australia (Australia CAN or CANA) officially launches its Pets in Business program to help employers set up pet-friendly policies that meet the needs of the business, non-pet owners and pet-owning staff.

Research shows
🐾 85% Australian dog owners would go into the office more if they could take their pets.
🐾 63%* of employees in pet-friendly workplaces are “very satisfied” with their work environment (and that is nearly twice as many as those in workplaces where pets are not allowed).
🐾 9 in 10 employees are highly bonded to their employer when pet friendly benefits are offered.

“As some companies struggle to persuade employees to spend more time working onsite, implementing a pet-friendly policy might be the perfect solution for creating happier and more productive workplaces!” says Trish Ennis, CANA CEO.

CANA’s Pets in Business program provides FREE resources to support the workplace, such as Pet Resume, Pet Friendly Workplace and Pet Free Zone Posters, Rules for Pets and Humans, and Office Pet Roster. For a donation, CANA can also set up employers with a branded Pets In Business kit that includes rules and regulations that meet the needs of everyone in the workplace. All donations go towards supporting the work of CANA member agencies.

We are seeing a large spike in cats and kittens being relinquished to our member shelters around the country as a result of cats breeding all year round due to warmer weather.

Data consolidated from five of our members for January to February 2024 shows a 𝟰𝟴% 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 in cat and kitten surrenders nationally compared to the same time period last year.

“We are urging people to desex their pets, consider adoption and support animal welfare charities so they can continue to help save lives,” says Australia CAN CEO Trish Ennis.

You can support the direct-care of Australia CAN member agencies by donating via www.australiacan.org.au

Press Release from larashannon Pooches at Play

Pawsome Pursuit for Australia’s Canine Sporting Legends, Everyday Heroes, Most Talented, Oldest And Hardest Working Dogs
* Register interest now, entries open 22 April 2024 *

Have you got a dog who stands out from the pack with their unique talents, sporting prowess, community service and hard work? Or could your senior pooch take the reins from Bluey the Australian Cattle Dog to hold the official Guinness World Records ‘Oldest Dog’ title?

Registrations of Interest are now open for the inaugural The Dog Down Under competition 2024 with a total prize pool of more than $28,000 up for grabs!

The Dog Down Under campaign is hosted by Lara Shannon, leading Australian dog expert and creator and host of Channel 10’s Pooches at Play and 7TWO’s Animal SOS Australia. Shannon will travel the country to meet with the finalists and winners from each of the five categories and share their stories in a five-part TV series to air on Ch 10 in September 2024.

“I am so excited to hear about the amazing tales of courage, dedication, athletic skills and tireless work of our canine companions and to share their heart-warming stories with Australia on our social media and later this year on TV,” she says.

“We urge Australians to nominate their dogs, or dogs they know, into one or more of the five award categories, helping us find dogs who deserve recognition for their sporting achievements, special skills or talents, those who are actively impacting and preserving human lives, as well as Australia’s oldest living dog.”

It’s widely acknowledged and supported by research, including recent findings from Konkuk University (South Korea)*, that dogs have a profound positive impact on our well-being.

“Our dogs make us feel good by reducing both our mental and physical stress, promoting relaxation and even boosting our memories. Not to mention their innate sixth sense and scent detection skills to pick up when we are sick or in need of help!” says Shannon.

“That’s why I felt it was so important to create not only a competition, but also start a movement that helps to share all of the wonderful ways dogs benefit our lives.”

COMPETITION CATEGORIES

MOST TALENTED - From talking with buttons to excelling at a trick’s routine, playing an instrument, to ‘singing’ their favourite song and more, could your pooch take out the title of Australia’s most talented dog?

EVERYDAY HEROES - From wrangling Snakes to saving Koalas from fire, detecting disease and seizures, to raising the alarm of trouble, there are many tales of heroic dogs that have saved lives, even at the cost of their own, and we want to hear their story.

HARDEST WORKING - From hardworking herders to faithful flock guardians, police dogs and four-legged heroes going to war, to canines helping people in need. This category is for those dogs with jobs that go above and beyond the call of duty.

SPORTING LEGENDS - From obedience trials to agility and flyball, dock jumping and disc dogs, sheepdog trials, sled dog racing and much more, this category is for the canine sports stars that are ready to impress with their athletic prowess and sporting attitude to life.

OLDEST - Have you got Australia’s oldest dog? Could they even take over the World’s Oldest Dog title? One finalist will be nominated for each size category -Miniature/Toy/Small, Medium, Large & Giant Breed - with the oldest dog across all categories earning the crown.

Ten Finalists – including one Overall Winner - will be chosen for each category, except Oldest Dog. One finalist will be nominated for each of the Oldest Dog size categories: Miniature/Toy/Small, Medium, Large & Giant Breed - with the oldest dog across all categories earning the Overall Winner’s title.

The Victorian Pet Census results are in and it’s clear Victorians love their pets!

The Census identified an estimated 4.3 million pets across the state, providing a greater understanding of the unique needs of a variety of animal species to help close the current knowledge gap on pet welfare and owner priorities.

Some key findings from the Census include:

58% of Victorian adults own a pet.
There are an estimated 1.4 million Victorian households with a pet.
Dogs are the most common type of pet.
51% of dog owners acquired their dog from a breeder, compared to 10% of cat owners.
28% of cat owners got their cat from a rehoming organisation and 22% from an animal shelter.
Victorians spent $6.6 billion on their pets in the year leading up to the census.
10% of Victorian adults planned to get a pet in the next 12 months.

12/12/2023

A carefully considered puppy or kitten can be a perfect gift for Christmas, but not every family is ready for a long-term commitment. The sad reality is that cost-of-living pressures and housing shortage are leading to the surrender of thousands of animals to shelters that are already over capacity.

To help ease increasing pressure on animal shelters, Companion Animal Network Australia is advocating for the fostering of animals from shelters or rescue groups over the holidays.

CANA CEO Trish Ennis says, “Shelters all need help over Christmas time as their current foster carers go on holidays and have to return the pets to the shelters while they are away. Fostering an animal is a great way to help shelters increase the chance of them being adopted. And it’s emotionally rewarding – doing good makes you feel good.”

Is this puppy real? During Scams Awareness Week 2023 (27 Nov – 1 Dec), Companion Animal Network Australia is warning pet lovers to watch out for scammers in clever disguise.

Once again we have partnered with Puppy Scam Awareness Australia (PSAA) to help animal lovers identify imposter rescue organisations and breeders, and to avoid pet scams that continue to cause heartbreak and anger.

“Scammers are professional crooks, and it can be difficult to distinguish between what is real or a scam,” says Trish Ennis, CEO of Australia CAN.
