Nestled between the beautiful Hunter Valley and scenic Central Coast, Willow's Leap is an equestrian training facility within easy reach of both Sydney and Newcastle. Our team:-

Lyndel Taylor - Currently eventing at One Star level, Lyndel has been riding for 30 years and is in the process of finishing her EFA Level I Instructor training. Her love for riding and passion for cross country grew up f

rom dragging a succession of native ponies after her local Hunt in North Yorkshire; a little more 'Thelwell' than the elegant jumping you see from her today! The Hunt never caught the fox, but did catch Lyndel's interest! She is available by appointment for individual lessons and clinics (specialising in the cross country aspect but happy to teach beginners and novices at show jumping and dressage too), and also has a limited capacity to accept horses for training. She will travel locally if you would prefer your horse trained at home. Phil Janson - Behind most of our jump design, building and photography, Phil does what he is told. But he secretly enjoys it...
As well as making jumps for Willow's Leap, he has supplied portable jumps to Wollombi and Mount Sugarloaf Pony Clubs, as well as assisting Darryl Burgess from Boonoona Designs making fixed and portable jumps on site. He is available for jump advice, and if he can't help you build then will point you in the right direction. On site we have:
Cross Country training jumps ranging from Encourager to One Star
Showjump paddock
Grass dressage arena
Fully qualified emergency medical support at all times

We have limited water - whilst we will always provide some for your horses to drink, we do not have enough to offer wash bays at this time. Whilst we love dogs, bringing your own is strictly prohibited. If we already know them, we may be happy for you to bring your own instructor. However, due to our insurance they must be EFA (or similar) registered and insured. All our other normal rules still apply. We have regular clinics with other fabulous instructors too, such as Belinda Bailey, Level II coach educator and Emma Mason, 4* eventer and local superstar. Please make sure you 'like' the site and add to one of your 'interest lists' to continue to get updates, photos from out and about on the Eventing scene and clinic dates. If you see our truck, make sure you come and say hi!

Last Friday, after a short illness, we had to say goodbye to beautiful Miss Magic. Initially bought as a $200 project pony, she quickly proved herself to be so much more. From green-broken to 2*, and kind enough to guide a nervous teenager through her first 80cm (and made XC fun for the first time), she was one in a million. We were bloody lucky to have her. Thank you to Rob from for all his care, right until the end. Sleep easy Miss Mac xx

Holiday with your horses AND enjoy this…

This year, it's been quite hard to see the stars. Obviously, because there have been a comet, a great meteor shower, auroras off the charts, etc. Yesterday, however, the clouds broke, and we headed up to the Retreat to have a look. Unfortunately, the main Milky Way galactic core was still rising (in the left of the picture) as the cloud returned, but all was not lost. So, we went spotlighting instead. Head over to our insta to see what we found this time...

For anyone who needs to hear it ….

The Next Horse

I don't often say a horse has a job yet the next horse that comes into our lives after the loss of another has a huge job that it is not even aware of

The task the next horse takes on is to heal a small piece of our heart that gets broken every time we say goodbye to a friend, yet often healing takes place without us or the horse even knowing it's just happening with no contract written between you and the horse

The tears will always fall for the last horse, the regrets, the what ifs, the if only we could have done differently, yet the smiles begin to reappear as the next horse makes its way into our hearts

The eyes of the horse is the window to their soul and the eyes of the next horse has a kindness and almost an old soul, we recognise something that brings us comfort

Owning a complex horse can emotionally drain you, everything is questioned, everything is analysed, everything is planned meticulously that when the next horse comes along, we often forget we may have never had the chance just to be in the moment, to be spontaneous, to say yes to things which we thought we would never do and even just have the moment to enjoy the gift they have given

We can often feel guilt that we may begin to enjoy this new journey for fear of letting down the last horses memory , yet we are experiencing new things that were never possible with the last horse so there should never be guilt as each horse brings a different journey we must take before we meet our next horse

We can still remember with fondness the memories of our last horse yet still enjoy the new experiences the next horse

As we come to the end of the journey with the last horse and new one begins with the next horse we must always never question the journey but accept these are the journeys we were destined to be on

For my client x

Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

*thank you to whoever wrote this! Not my words, but certainly a shared sentiment!

20/03/2024

We see a lot of horses, and a whole lot of different gear. One thing none of our horses have? A tight nose band. Well done, pony club!

Do you use gear on your horse because he needs it or just because it looks good?
It is something to think about, because if it is something you can do without, your horse might be more comfortable and even perform better.

Take nosebands. Your horse will be a lot happier if he can yawn, cough and chew while wearing a noseband – such as a cavesson (top right pic) – or no noseband at all, which is permitted at PC events.

Nosebands which have a strap passing under the bit and around the horse’s chin like those in the photos (left) are used by some riders to stabilise the bit in the horse’s mouth, or prevent the horse crossing its jaw or putting its tongue over the bit.
It also means you are applying constant pressure to his nose and mouth, which means the horse never gets a reward (remember negative reinforcement, where taking away pressure rewards the horse?)

As well, tight nosebands can affect a horse’s breathing, especially if they sit low. They can also press on soft parts of the horse’s nose and mouth, cause nerve damage and even affect a horse psychologically if he cannot soften and relax his jaw.

A tight noseband can cover up bad riding. If you discount sharp teeth and other mouth issues, and strong bits (a topic for another day), whatever the horse is doing with its mouth is a symptom of how it is being ridden by the rider. Talk to your Pony Club coach if you are having control problems with your horse.

NOTE:
* Nosebands not fitted properly would not pass a gear check - but make sure you know what to do at home too.
* Positive and negative reinforcement are covered in the PCA Certificate Manuals as part of the principles of equitation science.
* If you think your lower noseband strap is not too tight – why use it at all?
* As with any gear change, including removing gear, it’s a good idea to check with your Pony Club coach, and check the National Gear Rules for what’s allowed (sometimes it is discipline-specific) and how to fit it.

We’ve had a few people asking us, when our next clinic date is…. And we’re really hoping we can give you an answer, really soon. However, we’ve had to take a little break recently. Lyndel hasn’t been very well, and has needed some time off. She should be back in action soon, but until then, we’re glad that we have so many lovely clients and friends checking in. And bringing us beautiful flowers and cakes- it makes all the difference. Thanks for your patience, kindness and understanding. And see you all soon!!
Edited to add- apologies for worrying you all! Whilst it has been a rotten couple of months, she should be absolutely fine in a few weeks, and no, it’s not horse related!
